Starbound Beta Thread - Begins December 4th!

Still crashes for me, regardless of char I pick.

It pretty much crashes when I try to connect. So right after I put in the username/pw for the server.

I'm currently working, won't be home for another hour or so. I'll sort it out when I get back.

EDIT: Well, got home, restarted server. Everything seems fine (I'm able to login).

Server seems to be down.

Same here, but that's fine. I had a sand-related crash that wiped out my character, so I've gotta at least get my FTL repaired so I can try to find that planet I was working on terraforming. Then it's back to hunting down materials.... again.

I wish some of the mods worked so I could jump back to where I was, but it looks like there's not much interest in them.

I personally am not interested in the mods since there's already a ton of work put into the game

Oh, I just meant a way to generate armor / weapons / quest items so I can quickly get back to where I was before the crash. Other than that, I don't like to use mods either. Certainly none of the cheat-like ones (moving through solid materials, teleporting, immobility, etc.). I did use a mod in the last update to make one of the Generator items (which are otherwise unobtainable) because it was just too perfect for my ship. Since my character was wiped, that's gone now too.

Shit is crazy. Only did it because I got mega fucking tired of trying to find out what the hell I am supposed to do.

If any one was just on, power went out. Sorry. I'll try and get it back up as soon as power is restored.

EDIT: Ehh... took too long for it to come back, and I had to sleep. It's back up now though.

Hmmm... looks like they decided to make Starbound's Stable and Unstable branches two separate apps in Steam.

You might see "Starbound" and "Starbound-Unstable" in the list. If you don't want to see one of them, just hide it.

server is running stable right?

I think I'll just use mods on unstable, really, now that the stable and unstable are now seperate, though it is fun to have the drones mod and the Mega Man X mod on.

Haven't played this in a while.

Booted it up today and noticed that a whole bunch of stuff from my worlds have disappeared; namely planted seeds/saplings, trees, etc..

That normal from the last stable branch or two?

Kinda bummed too as I've probably lost a bunch of seeds now.

It's Starbound, I'm used to things disappearing and character wipes. :(

What's up with this game? Still no end in sight? Rationale responses only please

- Not done yet. If it was, we'd have the official thread up by now.

- Yes its being worked on. They've been reporting on what they're doing on the blog every couple of days. Check the blog. http://playstarbound.com/

- Server is down. Why? People stopped coming. Not going to leave it on (since its my personal computer) if no one is going to play on it.

- Thread not moving. People aren't posting. Those of us who used to do all the posting of updates were just regurgitating what was on the blog. We now have the stance of "If you really cared, you'd check the blog yourself"

- Use the nightlies if you want to constantly to see improvements. If you're waiting for the next stable, we'll post when the next stable comes out as soon as we hear about it.

- If you're disappointed/never playing this game again/want your money back. *shrug* Ok. Not like we can do anything about it for you.

- I am slightly drunk.

- Ooooh. Squirrel.

I can't wait until they get their quest/progression system up. Looking forward to this game when it goes 1.0, but for now I'm happy enough to wait.

I get the urge to play every now and then, but I've decided that I'm waiting for release to get back to Starbound. The game has shaped up nicely and I love it, but this "close" to release, well I have plenty of other games to keep me busy until whatever date that happens. I don't want to overplay it this close to final. I listen to the soundtrack now and then still. I already have over 60 hours played with it, and I am certain that after release I'll be much more than doubling that number, easily.

I got back into it hardcore after the "stable" release and then it lost like 3 hours of progress.

Needless to say, I'll wait another year and see if the game is finished by then.

Is the game even gonna be out this year? Like , for those of you playing or paying attention, are we at least getting close?

The developer recently commented about this on irc;
<Tiy> Next update is likely the colony update, colonies, some new biome content, other bits and pieces

<Tiy> update after that is the combat update, very revamped combat, special attacks as secondaries on weapons, scriptable items (finally boomerangs, homing rockets, other interesting things), new monster types, some other bits and bobs

<Tiy> update after that is vehicle update, vehicles that persist in the world, multiple seats, moving platforms, some other bits and bobs

<Tiy> update after that is the story update, we're producing missions throughout all these updates, they'll all be tied together, all of the current awful sidequests will be replaced, and youll have a storyline that gives the game a lot of context

<Tiy> then some polish updates, and we're more or less at 1.0 (I haven't mentioned every feature)

<Tiy> then a bunch of post 1.0 updates

Some of those are already well under way (colonies are in nightly already, but obviously a work-in-progress), there have been a few posts about the combat update (lots of "we made this cool new weapon" posts here and there). Haven't seen anything for the "Vehicle Update", but that's one I've been looking forward to and asking about for a while (finally I can put something in all of those empty elevator shafts I make). I'm pretty sure there has been at least one post about the story / mission changes too.

I won't even give a ballpark figure, but both Tiy and Supernorn post here on GAF so, maybe they'll chime in with a rough estimate (wouldn't count on it though, they've done that before and it always bites them in the ass).

Hopefully this year.

Honestly that sounds like there is a long, long way to go yet, that's a lot of work. I wouldn't count on this year for release, not unless they drastically pick up the pace.

I'm okay with that though, I'd rather they take their time than rush it out the door.

Exactly. With Terraria 1.3 coming out there's been a lot of "Why isn't Starbound done yet" whining going on at Reddit and Tiy actually commented on it, though it's more about their general philosophy on the game than comparing the two;

Whilst definitely very valuable, content is very easy to add. Once we reach 1.0 and our engine is complete adding a huge amount of content will come quickly and easily.

I worked on both Terraria and Starbound and whilst Terraria is a phenomenal game I don't think it's aiming to be much more than you're currently experiencing (and there's nothing wrong with that).

The reason Starbound is taking us so long is that we're trying to build an engine that allows us to do some very exciting things in the future. Before that engine is complete we make compromises and include content for the early access players that is somewhat placeholder (current quests as an example), that content allows us to experiment with new engine features and gives existing players new toys to play with whilst they wait. But going on all the time along side that is the development of a very complex engine, being developed with goals in mind that are much larger in scope than the goals I believe Terraria is trying to achieve.

The Starbound engine is almost done and already the potential of the engine is being explored by modders and players. Things like our scripted interface system, scripted AI, scripted weapons, scripted projectiles, scripted quests, scripted objects are being used to create extremely unique and interesting content. There's a massive time deficit that goes into creating those systems and making sure they're easy to work with and modify, but once they're done they will lead to an absolute content explosion and I think people are going to really enjoy how we use those systems.

Almost nothing is hard coded in Starbound, its almost as much a platform as it is a game. Were making it incredibly easy to add content, we'll be opening that up on steam workshop and we'll be using those systems ourselves to great effect post 1.0 release.

We have been slow in finishing the engine, part of that is because there is just no other engine out there that does what the Starbound engine does and we refused to compromise. Starbound as a project is going to bring everyone involved a great deal more entertainment, its going to evolve a bunch more times before its done and when it is done the sheer amount of content is going to be astounding.

I've gotten my $20 worth out of it already, so all of that is just gravy. Terraria has a big update coming today, but it's basically just "more fluff" because they've reached the limit of what they can add to that game (which is why they're working on "Terraria: Otherworld", which is a whole new purchase, I might add). Starbound seems like it's being built to be more future-proof, and I'm alright with them taking as much time as needed for that. Terraria got old fast, even the (two) big updates they've done have left me underwhelmed after a couple hours.

I got back into the game again. Finally progressing to the point where you have quests and "dungeons" and stuff like that really changes the pace of the game for me. Definitely enjoying it again.

Hey guys! Just so you know we've started up our twitch channel again, and have been twitch streaming the last week as we run through the latest builds of the game.

http://www.twitch.tv/chucklefishlive

If this is something that interests you I can post here when we're about to go live with another one.

People will be able to see all the new stuff actually happening live, so it wouldn't hurt. So I'll watch when I can.

I always seem to check the blog a couple of hours after the livestream so I'd appreciate a heads-up in here ahead of time.

Stable is always another major patch for everyone and not just the curious/developer.
Thanks, I've been out of the loop. I guess I've been waiting for some sort of semi-"final" feature complete release to try everything, and I don't mind waiting longer if I need to. :P

Patch Notes said:
We’ve done a lot to improve performance but there’s still a lot more we plan to do before the game’s released. Hopefully you’ll see things running smoother, but don’t panic if some areas are still slow.
Sounds like it's still pre-release so I may keep waiting (I played Starbound very early on but took a long break). I have lots of other stuff to play anyway!

Oh cool, colony updates?

Time for GAF World to be colonized. :P

When stable hits, I'll put the server back online.

As far as I know there's only 3 developed worlds on the GAF server. My world, retro's world and GAFWorld. Dunno if other people made any developed colonies on the server. Would be awesome for a colony network.

I had HaRyu send me the world file for the planet I was working on, so the version that was on the server is woefully outdated. I've been.... um... busy...

The desert world I settled on has all of these enormous stone mesas in the background, but none in the foreground... so I made some... and have been carving little bases / transit terminals / laboratories / libraries / subway stations / apartment complexes out of them.

It's... um... big.

(Yes, the fish are animated... just not in this image).

So far I have three more or less done (some floors missing here and there, only one has a finished subway station), a fourth in progress (the library and aquarium are in it, it's a museum-kinda thing), a fifth laid out but not filled in (adjacent to the museum) and one more planned at least. I also want to have a little non-spire community tucked into the middle of the desert and a big industrial center / oil rig over one of the oasises (which I'll convert to a tar biome).

So... yeah.... busy. I'm gonna try to actually just record footage of the whole damn thing and upload it to youtube, I ain't got time to screen cap the whole planet.

If I managed to give Retro the world file for his particular planet, there shouldn't be any issues importing back into the GAF server later.

Actually, now that I think of it... any of you can give me a world file to shove onto the GAF server, I would assume. That way, when the server comes back online, you have a "home planet" you can go to.

If a lot of you start doing this, we might have to list down what coordinates/planets we're each using, although the chances of any of us using the same places is probably really low.

I purposely built way the hell out from the GAF starting planet on purpose to avoid any potential overlap, but this is definitely a good idea. I figure with teleporters being relatively cheap to set up we can just create a network of them for getting around (though people have to discover the planets first, so... we'll see).

I'm fine with keeping my offline/online worlds separate. But damn Retro...stop hurting my brain with these massive builds lol.

I can't help it, building is what I do and I have access to admin commands... and what I can't build, I make with the custom sign tool (I just wish I had more control over animation speed, the color picker had a 'currently selected' option... few other quality of life things).

This next update adds colonization, so... I figured I better have some room for colonists.

I am downloading the unstable build to check out this colonization stuff, but if it is coming to the stable build very soon maybe I shouldn't bother.

They're bug-fixing and testing for a Stable release right now, and I think they've caught most of the big issues. No date or anything, but it sounds like it'll be any day now. There's a couple Chucklefish folks hanging around the thread who can clarify, maybe, but I wouldn't expect more of a response than a carefully guarded "soon."
