Splatoon Direct - 7th May 2015

Fuck me with a Delorean, I plugged in the wrong power source to the external HD I use for my Wii U to download the demo and I think I fried it. RIP.

I’m so conflicted, it’s driving me crazy. This look so awesome, with so much content. I love the design, I love the music, I love that you can customize your gear and stats, it looks gorgeous. I’d buy it digital and it would sit so nicely next to MK8 and Smash as quick, re-playable anytime games…

…yet, playing with my friends is only random teams? I’m forced to use the stupid Gamepad to play this? Uhg! Big deal breakers for me. I’m glad they are doing a Demo. I need to try this out to see if it’s fun enough to warrant using that awful Gamepad and just playing with randoms since my friends won’t buy this if we can’t play together. If it plays as amazing as it looks then it might be worth compromising.

Please Nintendo, please patch in Pro Controller support. Please patch in the ability to let us choose teams.

Honestly the gamepad isn't that bad. It's not like its got that different a setup from a normal controller.

If the single player is legit then I can't complain about future free updates.

If it's something I can breeze thru in an hour then yeah, "not like this" Nintendo

Yeah I'm glad the single player is looking bigger and better each time they show it. It's looking like it'll be a full-fledged campaign

Wow, that Direct was very impressive. Biggest issue for me is that the gameplay itself looks like it'll get old pretty fast. Everything around it looks awesome, though.

I've been thiiissss close to pulling the trigger on this game, the Direct here finally pushed me over the edge. I think it was all the post-release content that did it. I've always been a bit wary of the small assortment of stages and stuff shown off, but those concerns have been soundly allayed.

So we should give Nintendo a free pass for releasing content-light games at full price? Nah.

I'm still probably going to get the game, but it's weird having a direct actually deplete hype. I didn't know there were going to be so many missing features at launch.
How do you know the game is content light? Those features and maps aren't ready, so they'll offer them later, where most other publishers would charge you for them.

Not to mention the game isn't full price.

It's pretty frustrating that Nintendo tries to have it both ways on the Wii U. They're happy to promote the sheer number of different controllers you can use in many games, but then in a number of the big ones, you're suddenly stuck using the one or two controllers you have of the proper type.

We've got 4 controllers in my house, but when we rented say, one of those side-scrolling Mario games, we discovered that literally only a single controller we owned would work with it.

Which Mario game was that? NSMBU? That is weird. I know 3D World has quite a bit of controller supports. Really, with their multi-focused titles, Nintendo has been pretty good this gen with controller support, just not this one, that makes the most sense to have :(

Isn't it $60?
And name a shooter that launched with 5 maps at $60. Name one. Most launch with at least 10. Most other publishers would launch with at least 10. So I don't think them getting to a more normal amount for free after launch is really all that great of a thing Ninty's doing.

In the age of where you have crusaders such as TotalBiscuit and Angry Joe...you can't tell consumers to just chill and play a game they don't wish to play.
What else is there to do? When free content comes out right after the game release then obviously they ran out of time. Yes Nintendo is going get hit hard from the press for this but what can they do? They need to release games for the system. Hopefully what we are getting at release can hold me until Aug.

Just now reading details. maybe it was said in the Direct which I will watch later but will I be able to buy the Splatoon Mii costumes seperatly? They better not lock them to a preorder bonus. I don't have enough money to get it at launch tho I hope do get it by end of July.

Also: Was off tv play confirmed? I don't even have enough room to hook up a tv so this is kinda important lol.

All other info sounds great. Gotta download the demo intime for the first event. See if I really like it. Kinda odd wa to do a demo but atleast its not only at stores or through some dumb means likke previous 3DS demos. Will be there. :)

Isn't it $60?

In europe its 40€, which is the captain toad and kirby price-tier.

I'm also a bit critical about that much post-release content, that should be there on release and also the stuff it locks behind amiibos. But the gameplay and the overall style looks really good so I just preordered the Special edition.

Would you rather them release it for a lower price and then charge for additional content?

Like I'm not being cheeky or sarcastic there. Seriously, which do you think would be the better option?

Honestly the gamepad isn't that bad. It's not like its got that different a setup from a normal controller.

Speaking for myself, my fingers are too long for the Gamepad to be comfortable. To grip it firmly, I need to bend them back slightly .

Combined with it's bulk and weight, it's painfully uncomfortable for me to use for any extended period of time. If I can't use the (frankly vastly superior in every way) Pro Controller, I'm sadly going to have to cancel my preorder.

This game is what £30, that's about 1/3 cheaper than most releases on PS4 / XB1 that have day 1 paid dlc to give you the complete game.

Considering the premium version of BF hardliners on psn is over £100 I'd say splatoon is a bargain.

Yea, it's full price in NA.

The worst part is that it is launching with more than 5 maps, but they are going to unlock the more difficult ones after a certain amount of time...

Imagine if they did this with Smash Bros or Mario Kart lol. And before someone says that this game's online component is a much bigger focus, that doesn't matter.

What I think is happening: Nintendo couldn't afford another delay for one of their Wii U games. Zelda U is pushing it in the public's eyes. And Nintendo needed to take advantage of the fact that with it being released at the end of May, there would be much more kids who are finished with school and can buy and play the game. If it was in August when the update would be done, kids would be going back to school and have less time for this.

Well I can't really say anything grip wise in that case, but weight and bulk... I guess just slightly rest it / support it slanted in your lap?

I would rather they launch it at full price with a full price amount of content. If I had to choose, yeah, I'd rather get the free stuff. But it's dumb that it would come to that choice.

Also did anyone else find the line about the squids actually being 14 a little odd lol?

I'm interested in the game, but it sounds to me like the game really launches in august with the additional content and the ability to play with friends online.

What is this game is incomplete nonsense? Lol. Guess they announced the postgame updates so soon it created so much speculation.

But didn't they say to access that content you had to be lvl 10 in game, so getting it in August means you'll have to grind to that level to take part.

How is it odd? From the first single player trailer they've been playing up the ecology of the world the game takes place in.

No, it is launching May 29th. The fact it lack a feature allowing you to play with friends doesn't change that.
Probably should hit them on twitter.
I don't have a twitter :( I am probably not the only person curious about the price discrepancy, so hopefully someone else will ask them there.

I'm gonna stare at this screen and listen to the music until Saturday.

Ya know, considering that Inklings explode into Ink when they die, this game is... pretty brutal. Ink to them is basically blood.

$60 in the US? That means $70 in Canada. I don't know about that. Not even going to lie the game doesn't seem complete just releasing it because they need to release something on schedule. Something like playing with friends online shouldn't be considered dlc.

It'll be pretty terrible if you have to tell friends that you'd like to play online with them, but they'll have to grind out ten levels before they can.

Giving them a specific age seemed unnecessary but really I don't think anyone was actually under the impression they were adults before now

I didn't know it was full price in the US, it's €40 in Europe, you can even find it at €35.
That's a narrow way of looking at it, because the game has more content than just those 5 maps. Would it be better if it had more maps at launch? Sure, but you're getting them anyway and you're not paying extra.

Maybe the game will end up light on content, I don't know, but neither do you. It remains to be seen how much content the game actually has and how intricate the maps are, because they seem much more complex to design than other shooters' maps where there's little in the way of interacting with the maps.

they start to be able to go into dat form at that age, but that doesn't mean they're on that age right now :^)
They hardly look like 14 years old, let alone older than that. I have no issues with the Inkling's age, personally.
Looks rad, but amiibo locked content is fucked.
I agree. Amiibo locked content is much worse than the game being released without the ability to play with friends.
