Splatoon Direct - 7th May 2015

Can someone explain the party system? Can I invite players into a party, then enter matchmaking to find other players to play against like in Halo/CoD/most other shooters? Read something about random teams and I'm confused.

Well damn, this deflated my hype quite a bit after the wonderful E3 reveal. Actually shocked MP is handled the way it is here given the past year since reveal. Hopefully the campaign is as sprawling and intricate as this video details, but will wait for impressions and reviews as I'm left really skeptical.

The Amiibo and Gamestop content lock is just extra salt in the wound. Here is some shit 90% of you will never have access to!

Neat Direct. Leveling up the gear with the skills you want sounds like a long and rather tedious process tho. Also too bad I'm rather busy this saturday, but might be able to try the last testrun during the night.

Also I wasn't aware the game's €40,- in Europe. Ten bucks less than I expected, sweet.

Mind blown.
If you found that mind blowing you'll probably die from this part of the Direct:

Yes you can invite/join friends, but the teams are randomized until august when full matchmaking will be released

If I understand correctly, you or your friend can enter a room with other people, and then you/your friend can enter the same room by going into your friend's list if there is a spot available in the room. However, after each match, the teams will be shuffled randomly, so you won't necessarily be on your friend's team. If this is right, then hopefully one friend can find a kinda empty room so multiple friends can be in the same room.

They're going to be doing continual updates. The game isn't "unfinished". It's being added to. Things aren't being "unlocked" at a certain point except the Ranked Mode as they don't want it to be filled with higher level players straight away
Ranked Mode contains the other game types... right? I don't understand why everything isn't just available when I pay if I buy the game. 5 maps, eh. That just is... unfortunate. I will wait until there are more maps and game types, like I said. Worst case scenario, it's still $60, but with more content to play.

No big deal.

EDIT: Even after watching the Direct, I'm still confused about the "map rotation" mechanic... they're locked for 4 hours and then rotate?

Splatfests sound pretty cool. It's kinda like Smash 4's conquest mode, except splatfests seem like they give you a substantial reward. And if I'm not mistaken, the reward came when he leveled up his splastest level, so that even if your side doesn't win the splatfest, you can still get rewards. Also, splatfest sounds so funny.

Soooo.. It occurrs to me, full match making is not releasing until August and Nintendo is supposed to release its updated account system later this year. Coincidence?

Gamestop isn't locking any content

I think he means the GS pre-order bonus, that unlocks Smash 4 Mii costumes. So technically, no: Gamestop isn't holding back any content for Splatoon...only Smash 4...and it's creepy Mii costumes...aren't you upset?

Full matchmaking is available May 29th...

It's just the Friend team battles and other upgrades coming August

I haven't been keeping up on Splatoon, but I got an email for the Global "Testfire" events, which I guess are the betas. Sadly they're only one hour each over the course of three days.

5/9 4am-5am PT. Really??

No...the first Splashfest is then. The "beta" is Saturday

Actually it's Friday.

I figured that's what he was talking about, even that will probably be buyable by the time Lucas rolls around

I believe they made it so most regions have at least 1 hour that is at a reasonable time.

It only took me 4 hours to realize that Callie and Marie = calamari. Welp.

lol i didn't realize this at all and i'm italian hahaha

Will buy this game when everything is unlocked, or it goes on sale, whichever is first. Not going to drop $60 on the unfinished product.

Wow it's 60 bucks over there? It's 40€ in Europe, plus if you download the demo you get a 10% discount for the eShop version.

That's what i was talking about. Seems like a similar timeframe would allow for Splatoon to take advantage of new account features for custom matches.

Also as far as locking ranked battles in the beginning, if it means anything, in the direct they were almost always level 10+, so maybe that means it's pretty easy/fast to get to level 10.

Yeah, Nintendo say it won't take long for enough people to do it. I'd be very surprised if we're still out of ranked battle by June 2nd

Saw the demo news in another thread and downloaded while checking stuff out. Super surprised to see a demo but just goes to show how important this could be for Nintendo. Installed and fired up, then noticed the times..... Nintendo knows their target audience like a science, those times are horrible for adults. Oh well at least new gameplay videos will be all over to check out if the servers actually work for an hour.

Also, also, I got the impression that the level ten lock is what they will be removing, not that you cant join at all until there are enough level 10s.

This game looks like fun, assuming the gyro controls function adequately, but the lack of proper local multiplayer, serious single player mode, in-game marketing and weird periodic roll-out of online maps and such is really dampening my vibe. Was hoping this Direct would make up my mind as to whether or not to cancel my pre-order, but am still entirely conflicted. Unfortunately I won't be around at the specified demo times either. Really, I'd like to try the game out but am not convinced it'll stay interesting for long.

The map implementation has nothing to do with the number of maps available, its designed to force players in to using the gear system. From what they described in the Direct, doing a quick weapon swap will not be nearly as effective as a full gear overhaul. Having to do that every match would just be obnoxious. As an added bonus, it significantly decrease the likelyhood that you'll never get to play the map you want, as most online shooters are quickly voted down to the same three maps every match. Why have 15 maps when people only use three of them?

Sure, voting can cause the same few maps to be played more than others, but you still play all the maps eventually. Plus, the maps you play more often are played more often for a reason: they're better. That system is used in MP shooters because it works. I shouldn't be punished into playing maps I don't want to play for 4 hours because of gear changes. Allow specific custom loadouts that you choose prior to the match starting. It's such an easy fix.

I see two scenarios happening in my head with the current implementation.
1) Start the game. See the maps being played are ones you dislike. Turn off the game. Result: Decreased player count.
2) Start the game. Play some matches. After 30-60min get tired of playing the same two maps. Turn off the game. Result: Decreased player count.

The only benefit I could possibly see is people would be less likely to leave matches before they start if they don't like the map picked in that specific lobby, but I don't think that's all that common or much of a problem that would need to be addressed by such a restrictive system.

These are global things. There are times that suit one region and not others. That's how it works.

I really feel like the second one is meant more for Europe and whatnot

Whats wrong with the local Multiplayer? The only thing really different about it than other shooters is that you lose point from dying instead of gaining points from killing.

It was never a secret Splatoon would be focused on online play. Also, what exactly is a "serious single player" mode? Why are we judging the SP without playing it?

Honestly thought this game would cost $40 like Kirby. $50 is tolerable but $70 Canadian is an easy pass especially since there seems to be a lot of content missing day 1. Not even the demo could sway me at that price. More than any game bought so far on Wii U by a large margin with the exception of Smash bundle.

Or scenario 3, none of the maps suck enough to never want to play and when you get tired of the current maps, you do some of the ridiculous ammount of other content built in to the game.

The best thing I saw in this Direct is going from multiplayer to single player happens in games, not in menues. Would be even better if the queuing system allows for you to pause a single player event to join your next match.

So, you're basically agreeing with scenario 2, except instead of turning the game off, you move to the non-online single player modes. The result of a decreased player count is still the same.

Player count is going to be significantly less impacted if you dont have to quit the game. Its far more likely that people will bounce in and out of multiplayer than outright turn off the game if there is additional content. The more people actively playing, even in single player, the more multiplayer player count will remain stable.

Still, the smartest thing they could do is allow you to queue for mp in sp.

Someone should just make a post with all the info in easy to read fashion. People seem to be confused for some reason.

All the online stuff sounds awesome and it's cool that they're going to be supporting it throughout.
