Splatoon Direct - 7th May 2015

My only worry is that they seem to be rewarding better players with better abilities. Your matchmaking has to be on-point if you don't want that to be frustrating.

The slowed roll-out of modes and maps, given the fact that the people who will play this content are clearly online, seems novel. It seems like Nintendo is really trying direct the online experience, rather than the usual strategy of "Here's everything you can do, see you in 6 months for DLC".

Not sure if I like stats tied to certain gear, though...

Want to look fly, not dress tacky just to have the right set of stats.

The upside is that for the most of the part you're given a level of customization options with your gear perks, so if you really want specific kinds of bonuses with your attire you can shuffle the perks and hope for something you like.

yeah it definitely seems like Nintendo is trying to hold their audience's hand as they experience their first big online shooter. seems like Nintendo is actually trying to nurture an online shooter audience on their consoles now and are taking it pretty seriously, regardless of what people on here think. they're obviously not catering to us when they do stuff like this but I think I get it.

it's strange for sure but it makes Nintendo sense.

So I preordered Splatoon at game stop today. No code for the smash DLC. Anyone have any idea how we are supposed to get it? The direct made it sound like it was not launch day dlc so I'm not sure what should be my next step.

I was thinking about this yesterday, and in a way it made some sense to me to keep in mind that a lot of the production staff for this game has a background in working on the Animal Crossing series as well. That entire game is built around experiencing content that's presented to you in little bits at a time; slowly paying off and upgrading your house, the randomized shop stock, different neighbors gradually coming and going, the roving salespeople that offer special items, the holidays, etc etc. Little bits of new things is kinda what they do, so I can see how from their perspective this isn't "we should have just delayed the game and released everything in August" but instead "this way we're giving everybody something new to tune in for every week throughout the summer!" That and it's obvious they've been taking very careful design steps to try and ensure that the shooter-inexperienced aren't as exposed to the risk of being utterly stomped and demoralized by a practiced, coordinated, communicating team as they are in other contemporary shooters. It feels consistent to me with the steps taken in the likes of Smash Bros and Mario Kart to make sure that the most skilled player doesn't always win, even if that comes to the chagrin of the traditional competitive crowd.

I'm not saying that I agree with that approach, or their decisions in how to implement that approach, but I can see where they're coming from with it.

I meant to say "i don't expect them too." Regardless I said that for a few reasons but mostly because I didn't think it fit the aesthetic, however I've been looking at them again and am changing my mind. The girl looks the most normal and I could see her being in mp. The boy is a bit...different? eccentric?..something. He just seems like he'd look out of place. Of course that was before I saw that there's a gas mask so I don't know what to think anymore.

The squid outfit is the one that I still can't see in mp and think it will be sp only.

You know, I don't dislike the Gamepad (and have defended it), and I'm usually not one to harp on stuff, but the more I think about it, the more the lack of Pro controller support really bothers me for this.

And it gets even more annoying when your GamePad's broken, like mine.

Gamepad adapter was a no show for delivery today... gonna assume I'm getting it Monday :<

Enjoy Splatoon all!

Edit: If you're like me and not playing the game, you can watch the streams that Nintendo Tre-- *cough* Lead Scientists are doing. For science!

I agree. This is my first time playing a "shooter" on the Wii U and I didn't like the controls with motion controls or without. Kept thinking this game needS Pro controller support...

Pro Controller support isn't going to change the controls though...

Where does this sentiment that the gamepad works differently from a regular controller come from?

Yes, it will the Gamepad is just to big and wide for shooters and ZL, ZR, R and L just don't feel right in combination trying to move and aim with he sticks...

Um. You wear a specific outfit for MP, not your clothing of choice. Do you honestly expect the costumes will be used just for running around the hub?
