Koji Igarashi Kickstarts Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night (2.5D, backdash, 2018)

The reason behind this kickstarter that is the game still kickstarted even after have an investor cemented my thought that this is marketing. Not that bad thing you know since it's good to make involvement with your audience as early as possible.

Of course it's marketing, it's grassroots marketing. You're cutting out all of the middleman bullshit and forcing the audience to put its money where its mouth is. It's simply always going to get a better result. Pre-internet the issue would be visibility, and even still it is: there will be people that want the product that don't even know it's out there, that's a lot easier with a marketing campaign and a publisher and all of that jazz, but still the ease with which high profile kickstarters spread word of mouth these days is sufficient to reach most of the necessary audience for sure. It helps that gamers in general, at least the kind that would fund a game still in development, are a tech oriented group and are going to have high visibility for these projects.

I think a few people here think I'm like 'exposing' kickstarters trying to make them sound bad, that couldn't be any further from the truth. It's just interesting to watch the psychology of it all and exciting as a consumer to be around for this exciting period. Pillars and Wasteland represent my absolute favorite genre of all time, so believe me I'm super into all of this.

Thinking back, I've only now just realized how often the Igavania games (& Circle) played the "friend turned enemy boss fight" card. SotN had Richter, Circle of the Moon had Hugh, Harmony of Dissonance had Maxim (this and Circle stand out the most, as they play the card in almost the exact same way), Aria of Sorrow had Julius (and Graham, though he was never truly your friend), Dawn of Sorrow has Soma (bonus mode only though), Portrait of Ruin had the sisters, and Ecclesia had Albus.

And now it seems that the core of Bloodstained's plot is based around this theme. I guess Iga likes it a lot.

who cares if its marketing
KONAMI IS DEAD in terms of videogames
we need to embrace Igavania games as i dont wanna live in a world wheres theres no more vania style games

I refuse to believe it costs $150000 to add cheat codes to this game.

It doesn't work that way.

you shouldn't fall into the trap of assuming that the amount the stretch goal listed has much to do with what the stretch goal states is on offer.

Stretch goals are an incentive to get more pledges for the overall project. It's not piece meal. What they're really aiming for is as high a budget as possible for as much creative freedom as possible, able to spend extra money just on making what they DO have nicer.

The realization has now set in that these genres are at risk of extinction altogether. The situation is different than even the late 2000s when Igavanias were still coming out. Mobile has taken over. AAA has taken over. What was once routine is now endangered. A certain audience is fighting back with their dollars.

I don't think people are sticking it to Konami.... Most backers don't care about this "revenge" element. People are sticking it to current industry trends (Konami is in line with those trends). And a certain audience who remember videogames wants it back (as in, what video games used to mean in the era of Famicom, Sega, PS1+2, etc).

This is me, especially the second paragraph.

I've been following the Konami situation just to see how much further they can dig and to see how far the CEO's well of hatred goes, but I backed IGA's project irregardless of Konami.

And tbh, I'm all about retro games, and games that harken back to those eras. If I've gotta' hit up Steam or KS' like A Hat in Time or Yooka Laylee or Shantae or Igavania to help show that there's an audience that still loves this, I'm glad too.

Looking forward to some more non-moe, non-bullet-hell SHMUPS hitting the indie market (my favorite game genre). :-p

Yah some people just want Igavanias back. Part of me died when we stopped getting them (because we basically stopped getting 2d Metroids right before that too)..

Also, cheat codes are supposedly more kuje game modifiers to do more interesting things with it instead of just simple unlock codes from what was said on stream. I hope the bad voice acting option gets in.

Perhaps it's a series mainstay? Curse of Darkness has Trevor and Lament of Innocence has Mathias.

Who knows, may this new console Igavania will be enough push / incentive for Nintendo realize there still a market for 2D console Metroid and actually do something.

This is wishful thinking on my part though. It's probably not likely to happen.

So just the standard voice acting then? :P

Man...the day this happens. Also sorry to those who like em, but no, Euro-shmups dont really fit the bill.

Haha, Incredible. One backer even went for the 7,500 dollar tier - Ring of Iga.

I wonder how much of the sum recieved goes to backing-rewards on a general basis, beacause stuff like bloodstained glass panels etc seems a big excessive on the outgoing costs.

While some people remain skeptical of the product due to no acual gameplay footage Iga has already proven his skill and worth multiple times, so as a backer I'm still fine with this. I just hope he has a good team that can deliver the game they want to create and have both the freedom and time to do so.

So the additional strecht goals are almost funded, awesome!

Hey IGA, time to give us a Wii U and handheld versions strecht goal. I need my Metroidvania-fix on handhelds like i'm used to.
And if you make that a physical handheld version, will make me up my pledge to whatever amount i need to get my hands on that.

2D Metroid is what I would kill for right now. Metroid is my second favorite gaming franchise and all I've wanted for a long ass time is a new 2D entry.

The Primes were great and all, but...

Anyways, I agree with you. I feel pretty bad too since after Circle of the Moon I kinda fell off from the series and assumed it would never go away, they'd be around, etc... And yet, here we are.

I still need to play catch up. I've wanted OoE since it launched for example, just never seems to work out timing-wise for me to buy it lol.

So at least, I have quite a few games to go through leading up to this launch now. :-)

i wouldnt put it past this hitting like 5m before its over
Igarashi got that pull behind him
and i absolutely loved the GBA/DS games(still need to play Portrait and Ecclesia)
definately gonna buy this when its out

Yamane music had to have been another deciding factor. Woman is top tier.

As long as it doesnt detrimentally effect the vision.

Go and play those 2 like right now. Start with the weaker Portrait, then wash away the (slightly disappointing) feelings with Ecclesia, imo the best Metroidvania/IGAvania with Aria and Dawn of Sorrow.

As long as it doesnt detrimentally effect the vision.
I guess a possible handheld version has to be developed like a stand-alone, just like it is the case with Mighty No. 9. But i think that the 3DS (or rather New3DS) and Vita are capable to produce some good looking 2.5D.
Althought i wouln't mind a change to 2D for handhelds. :)

Well, I'll support it if there is a WiiU version. Don't tell me an Igavania game needs the power of a PS4 to be good.

I think it has do to with the choice of graphics engine used

"WHAT ABOUT NINTENDO?

Our budget left us with two options: Build the biggest, most beautiful game we can, or make sure it runs everywhere from the start. As things stand today, we can't afford to create the two separate versions of this game that would be necessary to make it run on every console. That said, we've heard legends about a remarkable treasure hidden in the castle basement..."

I read this as "we can't afford to develop a Nintendo version now, but if there is enough money, we could think about it".
So just put a stretch goal.

For this game I'll just wait until the game is out, I respect iga and SotN/Dawn/Aria of Sorrow are some of the greatest classics in the genre but nowadays this genre is already well represented in the indie-scene. Heck I think Guacamelee set a new standard for me. Curious to see what this game will be and nice to see that it made it's goal but I don't really understand why this game is such a big deal.

because Igarashi made some of the best Castlevania games ever
and Yamane is composing

Well, I'll support it if there is a WiiU version. Don't tell me an Igavania game needs the power of a PS4 to be good.

Bloodstained uses Unreal Engine 4 which isn't available for Wii U. A down-port to the Wii U would have to use UE3 and that's probably more development work than they have budgeted or planned programmer time for.

So see this hasn't really slowed down much since I've got up. Great to see hammy Hayter goal has been reach and Local Coop is only a matter of time before it falls. Be interesting to get more details about coop and what it entails as well if online coop is a plan or future goal at some point. Seeing Harmony of Despair is cheap on PSN this month I might double dip.

.....I'm...not really liking the art style...

It's not set in stone yet and seems like it will be an ongoing process to finalize it. I'm kind of not sold on the current style either, but it's still Iga so it will be alright.

"THAT CONCEPT ART IMAGE LOOKS AWESOME – WILL THE GAME LOOK EXACTLY LIKE THAT?

We love it, too, but at this point it’s only concept art—since building out the custom shaders that will define this game's visual style will take some time, we can't show you in-game screenshots just yet.

What we can promise is that we'll be talking to backers all through the development process, and showing them the progress we're making. Using UE4 allows us a great deal of flexibility, and Inti Creates can't wait to show you just what they can wring out of it. "

Glad to see he's gone through with it. I was a bit worried when I heard a rumour he started working at a mobile company, but the dream is still alive. I really hope it channels a lot of the ideas and structure of Order of Ecclesia. While that game game had some very obviously rushed parts, it felt like the nicest iteration of the Castlevania formula to date. It had a cool marriage of linear-action and and exploration-based stages. It had the questing and towns of Simon's Quest, with a more MMO-esque flair. Lastly it had a new take on the stellar souls system of Aria of Sorrow. Everything I wanted from the Castlevania franchise, rolled into one.

I see stained-glass and crystals will be the theme of the game, which I think could work. The direct mention of Guilty Gear and lack of WiiU/Vita/PS3 also makes me believe they are going to try and do something with the lighting and rendering style. That should help alleviate some of the 2.5D concerns some have.

So just put a stretch goal.
The estimated date of delivery though may be crucial. That alone would put them in a tight spot since 3DS successor will probably already be out and NX will almost be there as well... so developing for WiiU/3DS maybe would be risky since their staying power in the market weakens day after day.

Maybe they shouldn;t have gone for an engine that isn't available on every available platform to begin with.

To be honest, I don't really like the concept art. The individual characters and environment assets look nice by themselves, but the composition is a mess and the use of color is butt-ugly. At least, if that's the main style. It'd be alright for some certain area of the game I guess.

I read this as a confirmation of next nintendo system.

I read this as a confirmation that everything going on at Konami is really just a part of MGSV's viral marketing campaign.

So... local co-op is probably gonna be hit before noon tomorrow (Pacific)..

Do we have more stretch goals unlocked from the achievements yet? :x
