Koji Igarashi Kickstarts Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night (2.5D, backdash, 2018)

Inti Creates strikes again. I'm a bit wary about this, especially with the way Mighty No. 9 is looking. So long as the RPG leveling doesn't make the game piss-easy past hour 1 like SoTN, we might be okay. Also, securing Hayter's involvement is the best middle finger anyone could give to Konami.

PFFFFFFT.

I chuckled quite a bit.

Which is funny as hell since One of the most popular characters of the mid-1990's was a female. *GASP* Having a strong take-no-nonsense woman character or even a good characterization that is a woman can sell.

Well, that and daisy dukes combined with 36DD's.

She was far more well known for being a sex symbol then she was for her actual games. Legions of geeks drooled over her renders, and the sexy models they used for her at expos.

Outside of her, I can't recall many other leader ladies with a solo game. Kate Archer, yeah, but how many others? Most were past of a larger cast, and often just for the fanservice.

Also, is anyone else getting a serious Utena vibe with all this Rose and colored glass stuff? If I had the cash, i'd so buy a weapon slot just to put a sword of Dios like weapon in the game.

Blinded by the luminous glory that is David Bowie's physical manifestation.

? (Before Square character assassinated her), While part of a "larger cast" she has to deal with things SOLO. Even in the second outing of her, she's dealing with things SOLO., Even the second games female was pretty strong, despite looking for her brother from the first title/"larger cast."

The problem is, since the mid-90's, a lot of developers gave up on writing female characters that don't put up with bullshit and instead gone with the "daisy dukes and 36DD"'s as you say. Which made a lot of people scoff at female characters.

They complain about endless male character leads because they are so dominant in the industry that actual female leads are quite rare.

I'm not sure why anyone would want a male lead here, honestly. The lead has a great design, and is instantly recognizable. Yet another male metroidvania lead would just be, I dunno, cliche.

I agree. One of my biggest problems with the last game of this type IGA worked on was that Shanoa was just another generic male character and was practically indistinguishable from the other male leads in the series. I am glad that he's decided to make this unprecedented change from OoE and the cliche issue of male metroidvania leads which has plagued the sub-genre from it's origin.

Additionally if Nintendo ever decides to make another Metriod game or if Sakamoto or Retro decide to go on their own and make a spiritual successor to the series I really hope they consider changing to a female protagonist too.

In all seriousness I like Miriam's design and think Shanoa is great. I just think the claim that the concept that a male lead in this type of title being cliche is ludicrous considering female representation in this subgenre has generally been good.

Lara is kind of an odd example where she was portrayed in an overly sexualized manner but she was still a strong female character similar to Bayonetta or to a lesser extent Samus Aran (I guess this one is more subjective).

Honestly though is it really an issue that a character is sexualized if they are a strong female character who is portrayed positively? It really feels like there is very little ground which is considered to be acceptable for female characters these days.

Also not really feeling the Utena vibes in this game.

Poor Aya, she was indeed quite awesome. Although, by PE2 they were trying to push her sex appeal angle, and 3rd birthday..yeah, lets not go there.

The RE girls are a nice choice though. Jill's RE3 outfit is one of my favorite 'sexy, yet practical' designs.

What's people's beef with Inti Creates? Their Mega Man games were decent and Azure Striker Gunvolt and Mighty Gunvolt were both quite good.

People seem to be judging them solely for Mighty No. 9 and unless I'm mistaken judging it by it's looks as I didn't believe it's out yet.

I think peoples problems with them stem specifically from the fact that it's 2.5D, which they still haven't really shown they can pull off well in my opinion. MN9 does look quite poor.
I don't think anyone is arguing that they can't make decent games.

I hope a stretch goal is an Orchestra score, only 19,000 to go until we get boss rush and find out the next stretch goal

do we know what the paypal total is?

Just understaning SotN's systems made it piss easy at all points. Teleporting and alternating between fireballs/up-fireballs made short work of everything.

The game was a fun challenege for 16 year old me when I had no idea what was going on during my first playthrough, by the time I got to my second playthrough it was one of the easiest games I've ever played

I'm replaying Symphony of the Night because of all the excitement surrounding a new Igavania, and I'm super duper rusty. I'm dying more often than I'd like. If I didn't already know about Soul Steal, I probably would be dying even more. Of course, last time I played it was when the XBLA version came out.

It is a lot more fun knowing about how many combat options you have from various weapons and spells. I hardly used any of them my first time through.

Symphony of the Night is very easy, been playing on my phone with awful touch controls and having no trouble at all. Still beautiful though.

So, no, you cannot bitch about a female lead.

This is stupid, i have no problems with Bloodstained to have a female lead and i've highly enjoyed Order and Castlevania Legends but saying that you cannot prefer a male lead character is totally insane.
The problem is when you say that you don't a female protagonist in any game ever, not if you prefer that in that single game you had a male lead.

It's kinda strange that people want a male main character for this game. I don't really play these types of games for the story and I don't really care what the gender of the main character is, or what they look like. A female character will work just fine.

Sonia Belmondo was the best of the bunch, she beat the hell out of Alucard after saying that he was too weak to fight his father... i wish we could've had another game with her.

Honestly besides Alucard I can't really remember much about any of the main characters from most of the Metroidvainia Castlevania games. I seem to remember there being a female character in the last DS one and one of the other ones I think let you switch between a male and female character but other then that I honestly don't remember.

Honestly though I just play Metroidvania games because I enjoy the gameplay style. Unless the main character is popular like Samus or Alucard, or very memorable in some way like Ori I probably am probably not going to remember them.

Glad someone else remembers Legends. It bothered me somethin' fierce when IGA went and removed it from the canon timeline. Replacing Sonia with another brooding pretty boy was a poor move.

Wanting a male MC is not necessarily sexist, but it is crazy talk. Shanoa Miriam is such a great design. How could you not want this?

Turning Alucard into a jobber just to make Sonia seem cooler was super lame though.

Just pledged 100 bucks for the physical copy and my name in the credits!

Here's a bonus pic from GDC2014 with me and the man himself!

Yeah... no.

The game is good... but the story is completely ridiculous. Ans she's completely overpowered.

I would like if they brought her back as a good character instead.

They gave her a hikikomori look which doesn't really work all that well for a demon-slaying, vampire-killing protagonist in my opinion. She's basically a female version of L in terms of looks.

She's not killing a vampire so, eh. Besides, Alucard was technically a hikikomori before SotN. :p

Alucard & Richter are totally chuunibyous.

Jokes aside, Miriam does have more 'soft-spoken, sombre' features as opposed to say, your average 'badass female protagonist with sharp eyes & a stern look."

She just looks like she's ready to swordwhip some ass, I don't get the impression that she's Sasuke, just focused.

And I want her to have Vicar Amelia's voice :C

EDIT: I can also imagine her with Chitoge mom's voice :C
