PAL Charts - Week 20, 2015

So far, the only time it's been 'interesting' is when it's called Call of Duty.

Marketing rights is ineffective without utilising those rights effectively.

Despite being the 3rd installment already witcher will be new for many, so this would be the chance to brand it as an Xbox-game.
Everyone knows that call of duty is multiplat anyway.

Has MS taken that chance though? I don't live in UK, but I'm not seeing the same 'narrative' that carried the Destiny release, where people were talking about it as a 'PS4 game', even though it's multiplat.

Granted, it's all perception, so maybe I'm completely out-of-touch.

Anyway, MS has a Witcher bundle for Europe, so let's see how that does, since charts tracks bundurus.

The only time marketing rights gets allot of discussion is when the word parity comes in or the 'not the sponsored' version is not as polished as it should be. That grates allot of people and rightly so.

I guess the other side is exclusive things in game, Destiny bit naughty giving Ps4 additional content example.

Besides the quality and content debate, I really don't think anybody cares.

Agree, but this would be MS's fault to not feature it. Maybe it's the lack of guns.

Heh, possibly. They did the same with DA:I.

The Witcher 3 ads do end with the XB1 tag, but since that now happens with every game with one console or another, it lessens the impact of branding a game for one format. They really should do an official bundle with boxart, as I think that will have an impact on Batman.

Wondered for a second how a Witcher bundle should have an impact on Batman...

Need some coffee.

Yeah, it couldn't have arrived with less fanfare.

I think we're looking at a depressingly low sales week in all.

Pretty much. As Bruno noted earlier, GTA V, which is 3 in the combined charts sold 11,700 units. Everything else was below that.

Witcher will be interesting as MS has the marketing rights.
It'll be a test of whether that makes any or much impact in UK/PAL. I'm guessing not or at least so minimal it will hardly matter.

Feels like the US is the only market MS can actually see some traction from that kind of deal. In UK I believe it's either real price difference and free games or nothing currently.

We''ll see soon enough but I expect decent PS4 win in terms of ratio of sales.

Have there been much advertising for Witcher? Haven't seen any tbh didn't see any for DA:I either feel like MS have given up some regions already.
I live in Sweden btw.

I'm not sure you can say that quite so conclusively. We saw with Destiny that co-marketing does have an impact when done properly; Watch Dogs was another good example, too.

Honestly, I just think Sony's much better at it than Microsoft, which is a stark turnaround from the previous generation. I also think, and I may be making sweeping assumptions here, but I feel like the audience for a game like The Witcher 3 is more likely to be on PlayStation.

In some ways, that makes the game a good pick-up for Microsoft - but if it does nothing to enforce the partnership (and let's be honest here, PlayStation Access has been putting out more coverage than the Xbox channels) then it won't move the needle for them.

Prediction?

50% PS4, 40% Xbone and rest is PC.

I wonder how much it'll hurt Microsoft's software sales in the future when they've attracted customers with offering them deals and free games up front. Are these the consumers that spend the extra cash for games? Software sales tend to skew towards Sony on everything except Call of Duty (and even then not that much if at all).

I meant very specifically it'll be a test for MS vs Sony in UK/PAL for joint marketing. Myself I figure it works well for Sony in region and not nearly so much for MS. Hence the test element. If Witcher 3 comfortably has better ratio on PS4 then in my view it'll be another piece of evidence that joint marketing isn't really enough for MS in the region.

I'm not speaking generically in my response but very specifically to MS and the region.

The big challenge faced by MS is simply the fact that (UK excepted and even there it's a tough fight) everything is against them right no in PAL region. Stuff that works for Sony I think just doesn't work for them currently. Must be pretty annoying for MS but I feel that overall they're stuck down a pretty deep hole with slippery sides in PAL and there's no easy way out.

On the other hand a console with free games shows, that the games are also enjoyable and playable on Xbox.
If you read some comments and discussions about how a game looks on PS4 vs XboxOne you could come to the conclusion that they are completely ugly and unplayable on Xbox.

Hyperbole is one of the best aspects of comparison threads and articles. I however think that outside of the most mainstream of the mainstream Microsoft doesn't stand a chance when it comes to software.

Kirby actually rising in the charts is a massive surprise, was expecting a steep drop off. If a little marketing mid tier game like Kirby can do that, I wonder just how well Splatoon will do.

BIU LTD sales awards (Germany) for April 2015:

>200,000
[PS4] DRIVECLUB
[PC] GTAV
[3DS] SUPER SMASH BROS.

>100,000
[PS4] BATTLEFIELD HARDLINE
[XB1] FIFA 15

The PS4 version of FIFA 15 reached >500,000 in November 2014 for reference.
I'm pretty sure FIFA 15 is the second title to have sold more than 100k in Germany so far, after GTAV in March this year.

edit: For Week 20 I can't find anything more than
01 [PS4] THE WITCHER 3
02 [PS4] PROJECT CARS

Nice to see DriveClub selling 200k in Germany alone. Bundles counted in these sales? Still great number though. I guess DriveClub should be above 1.5million+ WW(counting digital sales) by now.

Don't know about bundles. Data is form GfK so I'd assume so.
Figures for DC also include digital sales. It's not always mentioned so I don't know if it sometimes just is retail, and if they just forget to mention it. BF:H didn't mention it, for instance.

Was wondering if witcher 3 would be number 1 with it being sold since friday almost everywhere.

Yeah, Week 20 sales are up until the 16th.

Anyway, got a bit more:

01 [PS4] THE WITCHER 3
02 [PS4] PROJECT CARS
03 [PS4] FFX/X-2 HD
04 [PC] THE WITCHER 3
05 ?
06 [PS4] WOLFENSTEIN: THE OLD BLOOD
07 ?
08 [XB1] THE WITCHER 3
09 ?
10 [PC] WOLFENSTEIN: THE OLD BLOOD

How did TW3 enter the charts? Isn't it supposed to launch in Week 21?

They don't include digital sales unless it is explicitly mentioned. (so included in Driveclub, not included in Hardline)
That is also why GTA did get the 500k award on PS4 this month, even though it already received this award in February. But the one in February was including digital sales, and now it is without.
I actually haven't see them do that before, probably only because it was a signicant number of digital sales with the February award, since it needed 2 months of High Chart positions to get it "again" with only physical.

It's up to the publisher to provide digital sales. So when there is a award to get, pubs sometimes give digital sales numbers to BIU. BIU should always mention this, cause it's nothing that you can overlook, by just copying GFK numbers. As for bundles I don't know. media control/GFK charts don't include bundled games, though.

And they report the sales to GFK? That will piss publishers/marketers, no?

With Activision or other big publishers, retailers have to sign a contract (for big releases) to not break streetdate. Bandai-Namco didn't do this for Witcher 3. Some shops started selling it early and the others followed. Also stores that belong to big chains like mediamarkt (can differ from store to store).

I meant I wasn't sure what it means when they don't mention it i.e if it's still included or not. But apparently not.

Hmm... I thought GfK data included bundled games?
