The Giant Beastcast - Episode 0 (2015/05/22)

VINNY YES YES

Alex...

I liked the podcast, particularly Alex and Vinny.

But I found it amusing after balking at Splatoon's price and the discussion being sorta disparaging on the concept they then go into a long-discussion about how AAA publishers can't take risks and all the innovation comes from indies. Hmmm, I wonder why they don't take risks...

Anyone know what was up with nachtisch story or what word they thought he said? I'm curious.
When English speakers try to voice the velar fricative /ch/ in German, it often comes out hard, like /k/ - i.e. in this case, I assume the owner misheard Nachtisch (dessert) as Nackt (naked) tisch... worst case confusing it with the guest asking for a naked table dance or something.

Still an unlikely misunderstanding, but the only one I can think of. :p

aw yiss

The format is great, though I'm curious how covering news will work Beast vs. West. Seems like it will end up with a lot of repetition. And I've gotta say that having a guest is actually a great idea, as it will give each episode a focus beyond the general Bombcast setup with general talk/news/emails, especially when the guests fit in as well as fake-Jeff did. Anyways, it's nice to hear Vinny again... in podcast form.
AND ALEX! <3

Thanks for the insight. I was really hoping there'd be an email explaining what could have happened, but this is even better.

I lost interest in Giant Bomb basically when Vinny left/Dan joined/Brad took more of a role, so I'll give this a shot.

If it's not good then I'll check back in 20 episodes and see if they've worked it out.

Vinny's a nice fella, don't mind listening to him when I'm walking around at all. Alex is gonna be a nuisance but I'll give him another chance.

who's the 3rd guy? he was pretty good.

Jeff B from CNEt. He does his own podcast.

Honestly, that was a great podcast. For a moment I thought it was almost better than the Bombcast. Before I get burned at the stake, they talked about random shit, but always went back to video games and there wasn't a lot of "negative space" in the form of people sitting there not saying anything.

I know this is off topic and should probably be placed somewhere else but does anyone else have an issue with the layout of Giantbomb?

I was a subscriber for a year when they launched and even then I found the site a nightmare to navigate.

I just rolled back over there and it seems nothing has changed since the 2008 launch.... am I alone in this complaint?

Good so far but I really hope they change up the name and differient it more from the Bombcast. Bombin the AM had the right idea with trying to stake out its own ground rather than just being a variant of the main podcast. As much as I love Vinny and Alex, we don't need two Bombcasts.

I have high hopes they'll find their own niche eventually.

Nope, it's been a common complaint for a while I think. Especially their video organization and search, it's been god awful for years now.

If we can't have two Bombcasts, I hope the Beastcast replaces the Bombcast.

I enjoyed this. It is their first episode and they still have to find their groove but I really like it.

When Jeff and Alex were talking about how much of a disappointment the Wii U has been for Nintendo and it made Vinny get really bummed out and he plays the air horn to cheer himself up I literally laughed out loud and got some looks.

I listened to the first ten minutes and turned it off. I'm sure they'll improve. It was just too boring.

I'll stick with the main bombcast for now

Already better than the Bombcast. Step up your game San Fran.

Jeff

Yeah this is already pretty great. Jeff Bakalar seems like a cool guy too, good guest to bring back on.

R.I.P in peace Bombcast.

why do we have to split them up and say this one is best and that one is shit?

On one hand...it's good to have Vinny back.

On the other...Alex is there as well.

edit but not edit: Well, I feel like a tool for posting the Larry David gif when it's above me but it stays.

Alex is the best part. Never listened to Bombing in the A.M., but the guy knows his shit. It's nice to see him flex his stuff, perfect format.

Vinny's great, felt like the heart of the podcast--but his scope is limited. I'm glad Alex is there to support. I enjoy his take on games more than anything.

Bakalar: Great voice, a chill, mellow presence that meshes well. His attitude on some of the games discussed this Episode 0 don't line up with mine... but hey, I'm used to it from the regular cast. Wouldn't mind having him on again.

Ok. This might sound weird or rude or invasive or whatever, and if it does, I'm sorry.

I've never really enjoyed Alex content on Giant Bomb. I'm sure he's a great guy, just something about his personality doesn't sit well with me.

Recently he was on some content where he talked about being diagnosed with ADD and starting to take meds for it. Maybe I'm imagining it, but I've found him much more tolerable to my personal tastes lately. I wonder if it's related.

Again, this is weird. Sorry. Just being honest. Is this too far?

I know he does have extreme anxiety, but that is all I know from his twitter. I personally have always liked Alex though so he has never bothered me.

Personally not a fan of Alex either but I find myself agreeing with him on some occasions in terms of games. Like in this episode with his lukewarm feelings toward Ori.

This new Jeff is pretty good, except for the part where he was Witcher-shaming Vinny for having read the books. Come on, at least make it funny like our Jeff sometimes does.

Totally agree. It's very difficult to find something if you don't remember the name. Scrolling through a ton of pages is a nightmare. I wish they had a list mode that would just saw the name of the video in text so they could list a huge amount on the screen. Try searching for one of the e3 after shows. I searched E3 as a tag and it wasn't even listed.

Lol yep, I usually just use google to find things. Their search is really built around finding content on a specific game. I go to Google to look for videos on their site half the time it feels like :p

I absolutely loved the podcast. Alex has really grown on me over the last two years that I started following em. So pumped to have essentially two bombcasts now.

It's so great to have Vinny back on a regular podcast. Alex is great too, I've been missing him since the morning show ended. The guest was great as well, awesome show overall. I like having a good Friday show for my podcast lineup.

I was cool with Alex from the start, but he's been extra excellent the past year or so. He has great quick looks with Vinny, and he's a great host on the Powerbombcast, and his Pax Rumble stuff is rad.

Whoa whoa whoa...I had stopped going to GB due to it getting stale, had no idea this was happening. When Vinny left I really wanted him to do a podcast from the East Coast, he was what kept the Bombcast alive.

Took them freaking long enough to do this, I'm back on board!

I got so tired of Vinny on the Bombcast but when he left it became so damn apparent he added so much. I so missed his take on trivial shit. Cant wait to listen to this.

How is that even possible?! I can't even fathom such a opinion.

Not a bad debut at all. Some cool insight and stories and opinion.

Glad Alex is holding up Splatoon and general Nintendo shit in conjunction with Dan. That said.... despite the fact that Alex and Dan both clearly acknowledge the high quality and fun factor of various polished Nintendo first party titles (Smash, Mario Kart, Splatton, etc) I've been sensing a pervasive opinion across Giantbomb properties and games media in general lately: people are unwilling to acknowledge that Nintendo's games might contain any levels of depth, nuance, or high level skill potential. Like Alex's overall thoughts on Splatoon are equivalent to '*shrug* it's fun'. It's as though the aesthetics and feel of these games combined with Nintendo's image as catering to younger gamers means that these games are only meant to be chaotic party games. They can't be both beginner friendly and able to cater to skilled depth? Is this impossible? Many seem to think so are will simply never approach the games with a serious competitive mindset.

*grumble grumble*

Or maybe, you know, Nintendo games actually don't offer the levels of depth we're accustomed to seeing in games. I mean, Splatoon obviously has some strategic depth (hamstrung by the absence of any kind of communication), but in terms of mechanics or content I really don't think the game offers a whole lot. *shrug* 'It's fun' is really all i'd expect anyone to say.

And again, it's Nintendo's fault that gamers will 'never approach the game with a serious competitive mindset'. Randomized team allocations? No team communication? Map rotations based on the hour and not personal preference? Sorry, but what?

You continuously ignore Nintendo's faults and shortcomings and instead point the finger to everyone else that 'just doesn't get it'. I don't think you 'get it', to be honest.
Could you point out the hidden depth in Splatoon compared to the plethora of already existing multiplayer-based shooters that people know and love? I'm convinced you'd find the exact same depth (and likely a whole lot more) if you apply this almost obsessive lens of yours to different games in the genre that are not made by Nintendo.

Were you the same person that was complaining that they didn't cover the three hour Splatoon beta in favor of other, more important news on the Bombcast last week?
Maybe you'd enjoy other Nintendo-focused podcasts more if these complaints are your takeaway from these podcasts each week.

I skipped over the Mad Max talk as I've yet to see the movie but overall it was a fun podcast, felt both refreshing yet familiar which helped too.

Lengthy (maybe too lengthy) reply to Hoo-Doo which is almost completely off topic in spoiler tags below. Ultimately this is a podcast I will listen to again because I think they can hit a good stride
Wow, okay I was not saying that people 'dont get it' but that they put on a different pair of glasses before examining a Nintendo game, and that is only partially Nintendo's fault.

Obviously if players are looking for the utmost in strategic depth and competitive catering there are far better options that have been designed for those communities (often at the expense of the more casual player, not that that matters much in what I'm trying to say), but it is extremely common to see the bomb crew and other sites digging deep in to a game to understand everything offered but then be far less inclined to do so when it's a Nintendo first party title. As professionals in this space, any precedent that they might have experienced from past software should not become baggage that they carry with them when tasked with discussing what a game has to offer and it's potential.

It's PERFECTLY encapsulated by Alex's borderline insulting mention of the Prima strategy guide existence for this game and that it should be two fucking pages. 'you splat ink on things...' Remarkably reductive. Yes, at it's core simplified for a wide range of people to possibly appreciate and not have to think about K/D ratios and such, but absolutely no mention of the various gear in the game which applies meaningful stat boosts or additional abilities, or weapon balance allowing for lots of different play styles? My main point here is that if an indie or 'semi-indie' studio released a game with an identical concept on steam, it would be approached from a perspective of greater overall consideration.

Despite the fact that Nintendo could be seen as partially responsible for this due to certain choices, the games media voices that reach the likes of many only serve to aggravate the issue by not applying their normal magnifying glass to Nintendo game X. For many, playing a nintendo game and even appreciating it on any level is equivalent to sitting down at the kid's table during dinner and thinking, 'yea I can still appreciate this' 'there's still some value in this stuff'

You say 'accustomed to seeing in games' and that's part of the issue. Everyone is so quick to make qualitative of judgements of one game vs another. Why would I ever play game x when game y has this stuff which should be the new standard going forward? The maker of game x clearly doesnt respect my time'. A game can simply offer something unique and we can allow what is there to drive the conversation rather than what isnt there. I do not want to say that Nintendo games are some amazing extreme rare breed of unmatched brilliance in simplicity, but people have begun to prevent themselves from seeing the complete picture (which they may find quite fun and in which they may eventually uncover depth through continued play) because the picture is surrounded by a Nintendo frame.

Smiles and cries also brought up a similar point with a good example. That feeling of 'Nintendo should be grateful we're talking about their games at all'

That was really good, nice to have Vinny back, and Alex was much more tolerable.

Jeff was also not bad, chill dude, and didn't talk over anyone.
Wouldn't mind if they got him on a few QL's even.

Finally more Alex content. Always liked that guy, never understood the hate he gets at times. Vinny is the best anyway. Length is good as well. Hope they'll keep this up.
