Koji Igarashi Kickstarts Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night (2.5D, backdash, 2018)

K I think i'm going to bite and back at the $175 tier. (really wished I didn't give MN9 so much money cause i'd rather have put it towards this lol...)

One question though, is the art book going to be soft covered or hard covered?
The pledge description says it'll be soft but their infograph of the pledge tiers say it's going to be hard?

Hard covered since the 600k stretch goal was reached. I think they just can't edit the tier descriptions, only add some.

It'll be a hardcover art book, thanks to reaching the stretch goal.

As for the pledge, yeah. Seeing how Mighty No. 9 turned out [although I've yet to play it, so I could be pleasantly surprised], I wish I had saved the majority of the money for that and put it towards this. It helps that I'm a massive Igavania fan, and the $300 pledge is super-tempting. :/

I'm already at the $100 tier, and I might upgrade to the $150 soon for that art book. I might even go the entire way and pledge $300 for the signed slipcover/OST, although I haven't fully decided yet. $150 is more-or-less guaranteed, though.

Spend less money on figures and you would have more for Iga!!

I have cut back on new pre-orders for figures, actually. The only problem is paying for the ones I already have pre-ordered, and June/July are going to be expensive months [thanks to delays]. :/

That's not to say I don't pre-order new ones, but I'm a lot more selective over them than I have been in the past. The space concern, in addition, isn't helping things.

It's nice to see Kojima getting involved, though. With 18 more days left in the Kickstarter [and pledges continuing to roll in], I'm curious to see the end-result.

This campaign is quite successful in emptying out peoples pockets:) I backed trough PayPal so I hope they give the option of upgrading. I need that Kojima cover:(

I just translated this Bloodstained interview from game*spark, thought y'all would like to take a gander: http://shmuplations.com/bloodstained/

It mentions the Lesser Keys of Solomon, the Laki volcano eruption in 1783, gender stuff, character design...

Alucard's re-dubbed voice is so lame. It irks me that they didn't even try for a Robert Belgrade esque baritone in either the redub, Judgement, or Harmony of Despair.

The other voices are super forgettable too, and the writing is mostly just... different. Not better or worse. I guess I prefer the hammy delivery. There's so much less excitement and gravity in the new delivery.

I don't know Japanese, but I remember someone saying that the PSP retranslation wasn't even a retranslation, it was merely a re-wording of the original translation, to eliminate the fun. The original translation missed a few details that were in the Japanese original (that happens all the time with translations), but the new translation didn't pick up on those lost details. And the original translation pulled a few things out of it's butt (also happens all the time), while the new translation pulled those exact same things out of it's butt, just phrased differently.

So basically, the retranslation in the PSP version has no value, and only exists because nofunallowed.jpg

No PC? I know you got a beta key since you are in the same tier as me. Give the beta a try it is really fun and should help you feel better. However really we pledged high for the sketch and not only for the game since that's actually a pretty good price for original artwork.

That Aria poster (not the boxart one) is perfection.

Better view.

Yeah, that's what it sounds like. Shift around a few words, change iconic phrasing for something that sounds altogether more bland and conversational. Really dumb.

Really great stuff! Thanks for taking the time to translate :) Welcome to the forums!

I've actually had the Beta installed for a while now but I haven't gotten around to playing it. I've kind of been waiting for the finished/final product, since the Beta can only show you so much. If I didn't already have the game technically purchased, I would definitely give the Beta a try to see if it's something I might enjoy but, since I'm getting Mighty No. 9 one way or another, I figure I'd wait until release and see how the end-product turns out. It's more exciting that way too.

It also helps that I don't have a controller for the PC. Well, I do have a PS3/PS4 controller I can use, so I guess that's not the best excuse. :/

Ahhh understandable then you want to come in clean so to speak. Well I really enjoyed the beta so I know you are feeling uneasy but I think it will turn out to be a pretty good game. Anyway back onto topic I am really excited for this game even though they haven't really even gone into a whole lot. The $150 tier is killing me a bit but I am already this far in I may as well get the artbook.

Welp, just upped mine to the 100+ tier too. I'm a sucker :P

Hey for only $50 more you could also get a sweet hardcover artbook.

I'm tempted to up my pledge for the art book too. But then I'm afraid I'll think "Oh, what's another $100 for that $250 pledge, I'm nearly there!". Then, once I fail to resist and move up to the $250 tier, I'll eyeball the $300 one. "It's only another $50, and I'll get both the slipcover and OST signed by Iga and Yamane!"

Goodbye, money. ;_;

We finally have to holy trinity working together again, even if kojima is only making a tiny contribution. I'm so pleased. I really hope if this game does well, we can get another one down the line w/ more kojima contribution.

The only reason I haven't done the artbook is because it's not kojima doing most of the art.

*Sees all those increased pledges*

Basement Key will definitely be unlocked before the day is over :)

Woah, thanks for translating this. There is some serious info in here that everybody should read. This bit stood out to me given many recent discussions on GAF:

—Please tell us any interesting episodes related to Miriam’s conception, and the choice to use a female protagonist.

Igarashi: In our early planning documents, the protagonist was male, but since the titles I’ve made have sold well in America, before we started the Kickstarter, we had many discussions about what would fit the needs of the American market, and what the prevailing social climate was like there now. Americans really love tough female characters. It’s also a country where a lot of questions and problems about gender are currently being advanced, and there’s many people who believe “there’s been nothing but male heroes in video games; please make games with both genders.”

I think having a female hero is more motivating to male gamers, and I think women would like to control a female avatar, too. Including both genders as protagonists would have been way too much work for us to handle, so we decided on making the hero a woman. But our staff is a little worried now about whether they should really include all the gross, heinous ideas they came up with when the hero was still supposed to be male. (laughs)

Also, in those early drafts when the hero was male, we were thinking to add a rival character who would butt heads and get into heated clashes with the hero, due to differences in the way they saw things. Now that we’ve changed to a female protagonist, and that enemy rival is male, the mood of those scenes will have to change too.

Also glad to have confirmed that those things on top of her head were horns. I honestly wasn't sure and it was bugging me. Anyway, everybody go read that interview.

Thanks! That was really informative! Weird about the gender part, seems like he forgot he created Shanoa. Did he think since OoE sold so poorly noone remembers her?

Edit: I love the idea of Miriam constantly 'leaking' energy. Could be a great and unique visual.

So the character is female because of the current talk about female protags and representation?

Awesomesauce. She's a fantastic design, and I hope her personality is equally as badass.

He also said previously that the choice was a continuation of the last Castlevania having a female protagonist (Shanoa in Order of Ecclesia). I don't remember if it was in one of his Ask Iga videos or if it was in a written interview somewhere.

Yeah but... she's really not badass looking at all, unlike Shanoa. I really wish she weren't dressed like she was going to a Babymetal concert. xD

I was more wondering who he was talking to when someone said there are only male heroes in gaming. There's no lack of females. I can name 15 easy that star in their own game.

I'm not defending the PSP script from failing to more accurately translate the game (I'd have to know more to even judge that), but Igarashi has gone on record often about finding the original dub to be cringe worthy, and that a big goal of his when they decided to put SotN on the Dracula X Chronicles as a bonus was to "correct" the dub. I understand the appeal of the original, but I do not understand why there are so many who swear that the PSP dub is worthless or ruins the PSP release. Like I said, Igarashi has gone on record on more than a few occasions in his dissatisfaction with the original dub, and said in interviews about DXC that he really wanted to "fix" the dub, and was glad he finally could.

Good on IGA for being open to trying things like this and giving more female protags a chance. I certainly give him props for that.

Maybe one day, we'll get something akin to when he was talking about wanting a "Blade" like character in the CV series way back when, too.

I meant "worthless" more in the sense that some games get retranslated for the purposes of accuracy, and those translations ask themselves questions like "should we keep 'spoony bard' or not?", but regardless of where you sit on those decisions, the retranslation has value because it's a good translation where the original was lacking.

But SotN's translation was never really lacking, it just had an "interesting" execution, and the PSP retranslation apparently didn't even bother to retranslate, for what little could have been gained. So it's only claim to fame is that it told Castlevania's version of 'spoony bard' to go to hell.

Thanks a lot for translating this and the earlier interviews. I had read the SotN one earlier in the week and the information was quite interesting. If you don't mind my asking, how long did you have to study Japanese for you to be able to translate these interviews (that is, if it isn't a native language) and how long did each take? I'm sure with my ~3 years of experience, I could do it, but it might take a week or two to look up every word I didn't know, as well as to compile it into a decently accurate flow.
Just asking because I'm interested in the possibility of using my college Japanese studies to become a games translator, so I find this information really useful and informative.

If I wasn't already on the $100 tier Kojima would have been the tipping point. I will probably hit the $150 tier before this is all over, I need that art book.

I hate hearing that kind of stuff, but I guess it can't be helped.
