Koji Igarashi Kickstarts Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night (2.5D, backdash, 2018)

Well, i think a retail release for the Wii U version might very well happen, i think (speculation from my side) that it will be the publisher who handles all the hassle of the retail release for the consoles.
And that pub is/should be able to handle the licensing stuff for a retail release with Nintendo.

Maybe they add more tiers and update the description of the current tiers once the goal was met.

There will not be complete parity no. The PS4/PC versions will run at 1080p, XB1 900p probably, and WiiU will run 720p with concessions for example. There is no sorcery that will make it just work without concessions and not affecting other versions.
With that being said, if you absolutely must have it on WiiU it's great that you can. And the concessions are something you just have to live with.

I think Xbox One will achieve 1080p with this title. It's a title that is coming out deep enough in the Xbox One's life that supporting 1080p shouldn't be difficult.

As curious as I am also about what the local coop mode entails I'm also hankering for a lot more details about Bloodstained's overall mechanics that really haven't been explained in that great of detail. I mean sure the premise is obvious but each IGA Castlvania entry had something a little different about it than the last.

900p in the X1 is a pure technical limitation/decision. It has very little to do with the time the system has been in the market as evidenced by the fact that a ton of games release in 900p to this day. It won't really change.

I swear to god, some of you would be complaining even if Iwata himself was personally porting this game to Wii U with his old team at HAL.

I think the main reason games are releasing in 900p on XB1 is because they can't keep up with the PS4 and the game runs closer to that version in 900p than it would in 1080p. It's mostly a multi-platform problem. That said, I don't think this game will be so technically advanced it won't run in 1080p on both systems though.

Kinda shocked at WiiU support... it seems like they'd only lose money by developing for it? Very small install base, probably have to rebuild the game

This is pretty much my sentiment as well. It's wonderful that a small contingent of people with only a Wii U and less-than-capable PCs will be able to play this and not be left out, but from a business standpoint, this seems nuts. Surely the portion of the potential audience that fits this category is small enough that this would lose them money in the long haul, right? Even Shovel Knight, which was heavily Nintendo-focused in its marketing, sold a third of its initial copies on PC. Wii U's a sinking ship, kept afloat only by the constant bailing of high-quality Nintendo titles. That's why I said in an earlier post that this feels like a gesture of goodwill rather than a smart business tactic. Then again, dollars and cents aren't everything, and fostering goodwill is also smart business, so I don't know. But if it's not going to detract from the overall product, then a Wii U version isn't a bad thing at all.

I have a Wii U and an Xbox One, as well as a decently-capable PC. I love Nintendo--have since I was a kid--but I can't justify willingly getting what is almost certain to be an inferior version of the game, so Wii U's not even in the equation for me. So to the people who are favoring the Wii U version of this, I ask with genuine curiosity: why? It's pretty much a given (or at the very least HIGHLY likely) that this version will not be on par technically with the other versions, so there must be other reasons why you'd favor it. Controller? Off-TV play? General Nintendo loyalty? Only option? Something else? I guess you could call this an informal survey. I'd like to know what the reasons are for going with the Wii U version of this over others. And no, this isn't bait, so please refrain from making bitter replies.

But we're not talking about the Witcher 3 here for crying out loud, there are still more demanding games than a 2.5D game. 2 examples of much more demanding engines are Tomb Raider Definitive and Destiny running, both 1080p on Xbox One, why the hell would a 2.5D castlevania game run at 900p?

Does anyone know what resolution/fps Strider XB1 is? that might be a good metric.

That's probably why the Wii U stretch goal was set at a ridiculous amount (3 million) on top of the funding they were already promised from other investors (5 million) just for simply reaching the original goal. You guys seem to forget that this Kickstarter was merely a way to source interest (and some funding) rather than the main chunk of the budget they'll have to make this game.

Even if they spent the full 3 million on just the Wii U port alone (they won't), that's still only just over half of the money that they'll be getting to use solely on the full PC/PS4/Xbone versions.

I'm sure that they knew that a Wii U port wouldn't be very successful themselves, which is kind of why they made it such a high number.

We literally have no idea how demanding this game will be.

Hell, I doubt the devs even know yet. This discussion is completely fruitless at this point.

The only answer I can possibly think of here is the ability to look at the map on the gamepad and not have to open a menu since there are two screens.
That's the only advantage I can think of that a Wii U version would have.

Since you asked, I guess because I just enjoy playing games on my WiiU. I like the gamepad controller and the off-tv play. The games aren't there for me to want to buy a PS4 or Xbox One yet. I have been buying both Nintendo and Sony consoles/handhelds for the last few generations, so I don't think loyalty comes into play.
Even if the Wii U can't match up from a technical standpoint, this is different from lets say a Dead Rising port, where the lack of power dramatically changed the gameplay. Even if the graphics are worse, the core gameplay shouldn't suffer. For me, graphics are the least important part of a game, so the game looking worse doesn't bother me at all. Also, I getting both a physical and digital copy, so worst case I can play it on PC if the Wii U version turns out bad.
I also have faith that Igarashi wouldn't haven't put a Wii U version in the stretch goals if he thought it wouldn't turn out good, or would harm the overall game development.

Edit: I completely forgot that the map could be put on the gamepad screen. Add that to the list of reasons.

I'll own this on PC and WiiU, so I get the "best" and "worst" versions, lol. I predict the WiiU version to be less pretty (I want to believe it'll perform just fine, being re-built for WiiU and being a 2.5D game), but that doesn't bother me. I want off TV play, that's all I ask for since a handheld version is completely out of the question.

Well that's Armature's hurdle to deal with once they get to that point. It's not like Iga is diverting his own staff and Inti Creates to develop the Wii U version impacting the progress of the PC, PS4, and XB1 versions. It is being outsourced to Armature for this very reason.

Hmm, well we do know that it will be running Unreal Engine 4, and that being said, it could end up being the most demanding 2.5D game yet. We also don't know how well UE4 scales, so you're right, it's pretty fruitless to discuss either way, whether assuming 900p or 1080p.

You asked why I would be interested in a Wii U version?

Because I was introduced to Castlevania on handhelds (Circle of the Moon for GBA), and have primarily played it on handhelds since (currently playing DoS again on DS). There is a tangible desire to at least also experience this spiritual successor on a handheld format as well. If a Wii U version does happen, you can be sure I will at least enjoy some of my time playing it in bed with tablet in hand. Its how I've played a good portion of all the past games.

That being said, I will most definitely be getting and playing the game on both PS4 and Wii U. I understand the desire to have the graphical mastery of the high end consoles, but still I look forward to see what Wii U has to offer.

I'm actually hoping that they don't go with total graphical parity for Wii U relative to ps4/xb1. I think it would be neat if it had a slightly different aesthetic to put some contrast between the versions.

I still play IGA's past games because of the gameplay, art, and music, not for the super high fidelity graphics of course.

Also, I'm super stoked that others with only Wii U will still be able to experience the game!

Usually thats something sorted out after the campaign is ended in the backer kit.
I see. Now to decide how much I want to back...

I don't have a Steam account nor am I interested in one, since I barely game nowadays due to lack of free time. If I want to play this at all, it'd be on a couch or in bed after a long day.

Also, maybe I'm alone with this, but I like when a game has different versions on many different platforms. I enjoy watching those Let's Compare videos, seeing how differently games turned out on arcade, consoles, handhelds, computers, etc. - of course this sometimes resulted in awful ports, but other times it resulted in great ones that used their hardware to their advantage. Especially since PC is now my main 3rd party platform, I wouldn't mind having two versions of this game with individual strengths (in this case, off TV play).

I really don't think the Wii U decision is a good one. They made plenty of money on the original platforms and are chasing some short term cash but now have to manage an external studio working on a port for a game in an engine that doesn't run natively on the system. All for a platform that barely anyone cares about now let alone in 2 years.

But, the decision has been made.

They probably considered those factors, I think. To put things in perspective, MN9 is coming to WiiU... And lots of other platforms with a 4 million budget, while this WiiU version (the only "separate" port) will be a thing a 3 million.

I too have always loved seeing how ports of a game to different platforms have turned out, but these days the only differences are small things like, a little worse framerate and not quite as sharp.
It was much more fun in the old days when the power of the different platforms were so different.
How did Rainbow Islands turn out on the C64 (great), how was Strider on the NES compared to the arcade. I'm actually looking forward to the PS3 version of MKX because of this. Not going to buy it, just curios how it'll turn out.

MN9 is a UE3 game which runs natively on WiiU and this is a UE4 game which does not run on WiiU at all.

But the 3DS and Vita versions are being built from scratch as well, so yeah.

Yeah, I also feel some charm was lost when consoles ceased being so different from each other. And that's why as a multiplatform gamer I don't get the hate for Nintendo's "gimmicks". Why would I need a PS4 and a WiiU if they offered mostly the same experience?

Playing games comfortably on a couch or bed isn't something that is platform restricted this day and age.

==================

On the port thing, again I don't think it's going to be an issue. We all know that the main platform that Iga and his team are developing for a baseline is the Unreal 4 versions, so whatever challenges Armature will need to undertake for the Wii U version will be of no reflection on the Iga's internally developed project. I don't think there is much issue though.

Even if they try to reach the target goal of 2.5D on the level of something like Xrd, I don't expect this to run into any issues. The budget certainly probably won't be a issue since unlike MN9 which was entirely self published by Comcept's Kickstarter, Iga apparently has a publisher line up to help with funding minding they raised enough money to prove that this game would be in demand, that amount was 500,000 so that has been well beyond exceeded on the very first day.

So all in all, I'm looking forward to see what happens.

Regardless I don't mind what platforms this game releases on, As long as Iga's original vision and overall scope of the project is not compromised in any shape or form.

Extremely vocal, extreme minority with bizarre and nonsensical priorities/preferences always get what they want. Like the guy from the BS tumblr who presumably DOES NOT have a PC, Xbone, or PS4, but DOES HAVE a fucking NVIDIA SHIELD.

I kinda hope the Wii U version and PC/XB1/PS4 versions end up being different, much like the multiplats from the 16 bit era. It'd give me a reason to buy both.

Man I didn't know Link was a tumblr user

The wording seems to me that they will port UE4 for the game.

That's significantly less likely, and is a huge undertaking, one that they might not be equipped for as UE4 might contain proprietary code that only Epic has access to. The sentence you're referring to is ambiguous, it can also mean that it's getting a WiiU version in addition to the UE4 versions.

The Nvidia Shield is like $400 right? The same price as a PS4? at least according to google.

Isn't one the main points of the Shield is being able to stream games from your PC if you own a Nvidia graphics card? What exactly is this guy using the Shield on?

Why can't someone just have a Wii U for their gaming needs? The Wii U has delivered a number of excellent titles that a lot of gamers would be very satisfied with. Bloodstained would continue to make that library even better.

Plus, backwards compatible with the Wii is also a plus! Let's embrace every gamer from every corner of the Internet ;)

Plenty of people do, I only use my PS4 for FIFA and the off exclusive. The Wii U is the best console available IMO.

Looking forward to map and inventory management that will certainly be in the Gamepad.

Ah, there it is. I was wondering what the holdup with all the negativity on the Wii U stretch goal being announced.

Wii U getting a release has no effect on me. People are allowed to enjoy whatever they like.

I own a Wii U myself, but I'm looking at the overall bigger picture, by the time this game comes out in 2017, Nintendo's next console would have likely already came out or at least be very close to release.

I'm probably going to pick it up on my PS4 anyways, despite owning a PC as well. My PS4 library is small and I am trying to increase the amount of games I have for it. Of course to be perfectly honest, I'll probably have more PS4 games too by the time Bloodstained comes out.

To get this subject on a more enjoyable topic, rather then making a big deal over the Wii U port.

I'll assume the Kickstarter only physical release versions of the game are likely to be very expensive on the second market. The fact that they are limited to backers only is interesting in itself. I wonder what the physical box art will look like? Fancy cover by Kojima perchance? Maybe a full color instruction manual with a special thanks included from Iga himself? Consider the potential of what could be with a physical release.
