E3 2015 Predictions & Discussion thread

I'm not getting my hopes up. It's not the same studio it was in the past, and they haven't exactly delivered games with substance for about a decade. I hope I'm wrong and they blow it out of the water, but I guess we'll see.

Don't get me wrong by I'm not claiming the game will be a miraculous return to form for Rare or anything but I do think that is exactly what MS will spend a sizable chunk of their conference convincing people it will be. If the concept itself is promising enough then MS is more likely to be able to sell it to the fans. That's not necessarily a reflection of the final product.

I can definitely see MS doing that since Playtonic and Yooka-Laylee has been a huge success. I kind of expect some sort of nod towards Playtonic and Yooka-Laylee somewhere at E3. Nothing huge and it could be anyone, but their success has to have drawn the eyes from industry.

Did most of the talent that was at Rare back in the old Nintendo days desert the company?

Or are they still there to capture that old magic?

I think quite a few have left. It's possible they could get back to their glory days, but they haven't developed anything worthwhile in so long. I don't know if they have it in them regardless of who's working there. Like I said before, I hope I'm wrong. I'm not going to buy in on the "Rare" name alone. They have to prove themselves.

Yeah I was thinking along the same lines.

And they made the Banjo games everyone raves about for Nintendo systems not Xbox?

I mean after making Kinect Sports for so long I wouldn't be exactly frothing at the mouth to see whats next considering the exodus of talent.

Anyways will be kinda interesting to see what comes out them for E3.

Sorry my Rare knowledge is shit

They definitely do have to prove themselves now more than ever and one should have a healthy amount of skepticism, but I'm also optimistic. I doubt we'll see a 90+ rated game like in the old Rare days, but I'd bet the game will be interesting, fun and good. Viva Piñata games were actually pretty good, so was Kameo and dare I say Nuts&Bolts if you don't compare it to other Banjo games. Kinect Sports, while pretty "eh" in the public's eyes, were also good games, ableit not the ones we wish Rare would be making. It seems that MS at least is putting in an honest effort to make Rare into a respected game developer again, and so I have faith they will put out something decent, perhaps even something great. Phil knows a lot of public perception is riding on this, so I think there is some substance to what Greg Mayles said about this being the most fun thing he had made in a long time.

Almost all of the people who worked on the classic Nintendo titles have left the studio. They just don't seem to have the talent they used to. That much was painfully obvious with the release of Perfect Dark Zero and Banjo Nuts and Bolts.

Funnily enough Playtonic consists of a number of Rare veterans and look what they've gone and done with their new concept Yooka Laylee.

But hey we could be proved wrong and Rare could wow us all with their development prowess again but I certainly wouldn't bet on it.

All that aside MS is gonna go hard on their title no matter what and I fully expect it to be the next Titanfall style marketing blowout.

I really hope they have a new IP to be honest. Shoot, I would be ok with them revealing two games. One revival from their past and then something completely new. That's probably too much to ask at this point, but I don't want to see them leaning on their name and past. Maybe I'm being too hard on them, but I am excited to see what they have to show.

Gregg Mayles (lead designer on Battletoads, DKC and the Banjo series) and Robin Beanland (composer for KI, JFG and CBFD) are probably the most notable Rare veterans they have left. They also have a decent chunk of the CBFD and Viva Pinata teams left.

They have a few other 90s veterans left, but I don't know what they worked on back then.

That said, they've hired industry veterans to replace those who have left the studio. They're capable devs (at least on paper).

I agree that the game shouldn't be hyped up before we have seen it, though. They need to prove themselves.

N&B was made by the same people who made the classic games. The exodus started in 2009/2010.

Leigh Loveday is still there too. To me, he's the soul of Rare.

Heh, with regard to the bold, I'd be shocked if this applies to a non shoot-bang game made by Rare.

Thanks for the clarification though.

Yeah like I said, Kinect Sports churn outs etc wouldn't necessarily inspire much confidence.
They really are a studio with tons to prove

I am quite convinced they are working on Battletoads and a new IP, since they are purportedly working with both Unity and UE4. Battletoads will be a smaller downloadable title is my guess, and the AAA title will be a new IP. Don't remember everything said about the game, but I put together that it's probably a new IP. One Rare revival is enough for now. If this new game does well, then perhaps they'll greenlight a new B&K, but I'm guessing they're making something new first.

Might as well go all in, one company at a time.

Microsoft:

Halo 5: Massive Info dump, unquestioned star of the show.
Rise of the Tomb Raider: Pushed to December to give Halo 5 some breathing room. Gameplay demos.
Fable Legends: Out in early 2016, Info dump with gameplay.
Gears of War Collection: Announcement with a November release date. Done to build hype for...
Gears of War 4: Announcement trailer.
Crackdown: More info, given a vague 2016 date.
Phantom Dust: F2P, releases in September.
Remasters of Metal Wolf Chaos and Shin Megami Tensei Nine. Announced in name only, stated to be worked on for late 2016 as a last ditch attempt to capture the Japanese market. This attempt is paired with...
FF15: More gameplay/cutscene footage. Given a firm Spring 2016 release date.
KH3: Date moved to 2017, will prepare a port of 1.5 HD + 2.5 HD in mid-2016 as a refresher course for MS fans.
3rd Party Montage: Bits and pieces of what's shown at other conferences. Ubisoft has a go with AC and The Division + Rabbids. EA pops up with Battlefront and a tease for ME4 (Saying it premieres first on X1),
Bethesda comes in with Fallout 4 and Doom, WB peeks their heads out for a last-ditch Arkham Knight promotion, Konami shows the MGS5 trailer they use for the entire conference.
Indie reel: No real exclusives, just timed releases.
Minecraft Telltale release date + Gameplay for January. Brief confirmation that Minecraft 2 is in development.
CoD: BLOPS 3: Full Monty. Gameplay, DLC announcement, release date, what have you.
New Destiny DLC announced. December release date.

New Controler revision called "Ace". Better bumpers and triggers.
New Console Bundles with Gears and Tomb Raider.
Last announcement is a reveal of multiple projects from Rare underneath the banner: "The Ultimate Projects: Play the games" for maximum nostalgia. Battletoads XBLA in September, Conker's Big Reunion + Project Spark retail release in January, KI Season 3 in 2016 and the big clincher being Banjo-Threeie for release in Fall 2016.

Well, most of your stuff is already proven wrong, sooo

Rise of the Tomb Raider: Pushed to December to give Halo 5 some breathing room. Gameplay demos.

Lol, that's not happening .

Tell me when do major triple A games ever launch in December. It's generally unheard of. I predict Rise to launch on November 10th .They'll want it out before Black Friday for the inevitable bundles with Halo 5 and Tomb Raider.

3 weeks is enough time not to mention they're completely different genres.

I think that will be delayed to next year. Way to many games in October/November window

I can't wait to see the new Hitman. We'll for sure get gameplay, demonstrating how the sandbox gameplay from Blood Money is back, with stunning levels.

It won't be delayed its been rubbed in everyone's faces that its coming out in Holiday 2015, with the countless Xbox One best of 2015 adverts and not to mention Square just released there financial report which stated Rise of the Tomb Raider and Just Cause 3 will both be launching Holiday 2015.

and there's really not that many games with most of them being delayed to Spring 2016.

October :
  • Rainbow Six Siege
  • Assassin's Creed Syndicate
  • Halo 5

November:
  • Black Ops 3
  • Battlefront
  • Tomb Raider (probably)
  • Just Cause 3 (probably)

am I missing anything ?

Nah.

Square's financials pretty much confirms that the release window is locked. When you're commenting about your product line-up in your financials, by and large, it's very unlikely for it to be changed because you don't want to mislead your investors.

It'd require basically another "Watch Dogs" for the game to be delayed.

So true!

It won't be delayed. Way too many games? There's not that many.

AC Syndcate, Rainbow 6 Siege, Just Cause 3, Halo 5, CoD BO3, SW Battlefront, Need For Speed. All released in a a 30 day window.

Rise of Tomb Raider should release either on september or early october if they want to be on the spotlight. And I think its not the case.

Square is dumb enough for it.

And frankly, the fact that it's a holiday game is probably half the reason MS bought it. Because why buy a pre-season game? /s

So what? That's the norm for the holiday season. Rise Of The Tomb Raider can slot in there just fine.

There's also a new novel for Tomb Raider "Lara Croft and the Blade of Gwynnever" releasing on November 3rd. The last novel "Tomb Raider: The Ten Thousand Immortals" (they're by the same Author) was set after the events of Tomb Raider 2013, so this new novel should in theory take place before Rise therefore meaning Rise should launch in November and I predict November 10th.

I am positive the game is going to be heavily bundled like AC unity last year. I am sure Square has already been paid for the copies so MS can go all out this holiday

Guys, Tomb Raider isn't some no name franchise. Did we forget the reboot sold 8.5m? It could easily go in the holiday season, and it'll probably be bundled as well.

Yes I expect Halo 5 + RotTR bundled together with possibly TR:DE included digitally

but more likely just Halo + RotTR or RotTR and TR:DE

Yeah, I see what you guys are saying, and its prob true.
I just think since Microsoft paid big money for that they would like to put in a spotlight, and its are already second in marketing behind Halo 5.

But all you guys made really good points about being released this holiday

Halo 5 Custom Console Bundle.
RoTR + TR:DE Generic Bundle.

I don't see MS devaluing Halo 5 out-the-gate. They'll position it as the premium offering via customised bundles ( higher than lowest RRP), and the mainstream, price-competitive option will be the TR bundle.

You're right.

But I doubt it charts on NPD, except for individual formats.
Lord knows if it will shift much of anything worldwide expect for the UK

Not that its an indication that'll it have sold poorly but yeah.

The Agent reveal will happen this year.

But it won't be a software announcement.

It will be Phil Harrison being paraded around the stage, with ''Mission Accomplished'' banners plastered everywhere.

Yep! And he deserves it. Did a good job as a double agent.
Now it's time for Jeff Rubenstein to shine. Double Agent - Part II

Hi Folks!

I'm feeling great urge to buy NOW X1, but I'm aware that E3 is coming... Do You think that would be a smart move? Are there any rumors about price cut or new revisions? Thx in advance for advices :)

I currently own PS4 and PC (i7 4770k, GTX 770 4GB, 16GB RAM). PS4 and Xbone would be my exclusives-only machines. And I'm currently tempted by Halo MCC & Sunset Overdrive.

Lol, he probably has Phil Spencer and Larry bugged.

With Kaz on the other end hearing their plans for Banjo nuts & Bolts 2 and salsa dancing on Saturday.

Wait till the holiday season bundles, is kind of the best answer I can give.

Why not just wait? If it gets a price drop or anything (even if that seems unlikely), you'll just be kicking yourself. Not like you'd really get that much play out of it between now and then anyway!

There was a retailer leak of a 1tb console, that and the new controller with a couple of adjustments (3.5mm headphone jack built in) will probably be out in June. If there is a good deal that comes with it i'd pick it up if I wanted one, otherwise I think you will get a good deal later in the year

Yeah i'd say wait for this. Sunset Overdrive is a great game it's one of the reasons I got my Xbox One and I got the White Xbox Bundle :p

I'm finding myself using my Xbox One more than my PS4 nowadays whereas last gen I used to only be a PS3 guy.

Supposedly there is a 1TB model that might happen. http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1043611&highlight=xbox+one+1tb

But to be fair, I don't think that really matters. It could sell 800-900 k in November and still not chart but I don't think they would be bummed out by that
