Lots of heavy-breathing about exclusivity.

The PR says exclusively this November. All that means is that it is launching in November on the PC.

If it sells well, then there will be console versions down the road.

Edit: I just don't trust companies' use of the word "exclusive" to mean anything more than "for right now."

I really wasn't aware of how many people played the console version of the recent X-Com game. Since the franchise has PC roots I didn't know it charted. Going by these comments though it seems it had.

Also this is 2K, they are too deep in consoles. It will probably come out later for them.

Procedural maps, mod support and PC exclusive is already more than we could have hoped. Fingers crossed its campaign is a little more open-ended and random.

So...

- Mobile mothership base
- Resistance force
- Alien/Human Hybrid Cities

Seems pretty good. I'm guessing from the premise that instead of having stable funding from the start and losing it bit by bit as countries pull out or are destroyed, this game will do the reverse, where you start with almost nothing, and you have to convince factions to support your cause and build up your support network that way. Definitely heavily inspired by Apocalypse both in premise and in gameplay elements. Not what I would have expected from a sequel, but still pretty exciting!

Good thing you can play PCs on a TV these days with a controller.

Yep. I just hope the game is controller friendly and the move to PC only does not affect that.

That said, interesting premise. Hopefully grow the empire by "saving" regions, rather than slowly lose the empire and shore up defenses. Should prove for some interesting strategies if various world parts again offer various bonuses.

If it doesn't have controller support then there is zero chance of me purchasing it. Couch gaming with a keyboard and mouse is not something I enjoy doing.

Total random announcement though.

A little disappointed it's not Terror from the Deep (with proper difficulty balancing) but I like their direction here too. "XCOM 2" though. It's like the 12th game in the series and not the second mainline either.

PC exclusivity is a bit weird, though in the grand scheme of the series, Enemy Unknown (uh the new one not the old one) is the outlier in being (extremely) multiplat. Hope they don't drop gamepad support though. Hell if it's not an RTS/MOBA I think it should have gamepad support, not to mention the last game having it.

Were there many mods for the prior game? I've never associated mods with XCOM but I didn't play much of the new one either.

Excellent, fucking loved the first one. Played it on release on Pc and then again when it came to PS Plus. Day 1

Hopefully they will tart up the graphics a bit with it being a PC exclusive, as much as I loved the last one it was pretty poor graphically.

But the controller implementation was brilliant and totally surpassed the need for kb+m in the PC version.

Correct. The only reason why you could play it comfortably on a big HDTV even on PC. Now we are probably forced with kb+m. Well if it's good then it makes no difference. Some games are meant to be played this way (MOBA, RTS etc.).

"Tailored to take advantage of the platform's strength" must mean its heavily tied around keyboard/mouse.

Which is great news. Sucks for console gamers tho.

That trailer with the cobra O_O looked fantastic.

Probably, although as someone keen on using Steam Link and having a lounge set up, my hopes for that and games like this (assuming mouse and keyboard only) are entirely pinned on the Steam Controller working well

how did it sell on ps3/360?

That might be it. Though I think Xcom was on PS+ so I seriously doubt that they didn't make a profit off of the console ports.

It is baffling that people think now that exclusivity and graphics go hand in hand. Like where were you for the last decades of strategy games?

I own most of the last decade of strategy games. I don't see how Xcom going from multiplatform to single platform is related to that.

Really hope we can have more than one team on the field at any time in this one. I love the first XCOM but I always found it funny that 4-6 people were all that was needed to save the world.

In terms of story possibilities (spinning off from the resistance bit), there's a lot of interesting potential, especially in a "terrorists vs. freedom fighters" sort of way. It looks like most people in the city are happy; where's XCOM's motivation to keep fighting? Is it fueled (partly) by sheer hatred of the aliens?

Hoping they go into that a little bit.

Hopefully with it starting off as PC only they make multi-level areas less annoying to navigate. Game was great but had a few niggles around being designed with controllers in mind.

Dosent matter i worka t computers all day the last thing i wanna do when i get home is sit infront of one. This sucks one of my favourite games and i wont get to play it. :(

It'll probably have controller support, just hook up a controller and then chill on coach or bed. Problem solved!

Port begging. How it works?

Step 1: Choose console/handheld
Step 2: Beg
Step 3: ???
Step 4: Profit?

How the fuck do they get away with calling this XCOM 2? Come on, you're not going to confuse consumers. At least not the consumers that matter.

But holy fuck procedurally generated maps makes me not even care.

nobody is port begging, this isn't a case of a major console putting money into the game and people getting butt hurt over it.

This game came out on consoles before, so there is disapointment for those who wish it was a simutanious release.

I'm sure like before it will come out on consoles, just later.

And here I was contemplating making a thread discussing if we were ever going to see PC exclusive titles from AAA publishers again. I'm onboard this hype train. Glad it's less than 6 months from release.

Looking damn amazing. Anti-alien big bro resistance? Yes please.
Proper mod support? Holy hell.
PC/MAC/Linux? *faint*

Pretty excited for this. Really surprised it's PC exclusive. I can't imagine why they would choose to do that. I'm primarily on PC but I thought the console versions of EU/EW did quite well. I'm sure we'll see it on console early next year though. But regardless, day one.

I think he's trying to say that there are plenty of strategy games that weren't too technically demanding for consoles, but too complex without M+K.

*shakes uncontrollably* Fucking loved Xcom. Can't wait to pick it up later this year. PC only to? Totally unexpected, but cool.

Nice. Nice. Nice.

I never finished the older one despite sinking a ton of hours into it, don't really feel the need to go back but man if this announcement doesn't make me want to.

Very happy that they are making an XCOM 2, I really enjoyed the last one, but slightly bummed there is no console release planned.

This is the best gaming news I've heard for a long time! I really loved the 1st game!

I'm pretty sure the game will end up on consoles and mobile after a while, but it's a good thing that the focus is on pc first (early access, mod support etc...)

The amount of "the first one"s in this thread is making my eyes twitch.

Depends how good the proc gen is of course, but I'll be very interested to see that.

OMG, day one. Can't wait.

Technically it'll be on consoles too as Steam Machines come out this fall. ;)

If nothing else hopefully they'll keep the controller support for this.

I am ridiculously excited for this and am glad the teaser site pointed to this all along. However... Is anyone else wondering if they will improve multiplayer?! It was such a blast playing it in EU and EW with friends, but I worry if they might have scrapped it.

I'm assuming it would be something like "Aliens are pretending to coexist peacefully but we've discovered that they're secretly trying to subjugate humans but no one believes us"
