More classes? Procedural generation and better mod support? A bold and simple "2" instead of a lame subtitle? Fantastic news.

PC only?

I'm sad for console players, but this is the best use of a gif yet.

I don't usually pre-order games. This will be an exception, because pre-ordering is the closest I can get to literally throwing money on a screen. I played more than 400 hours of the old game(counting mods and stuff) and this might be my favorite game series of all time. Oh my god I'm so happy right now.

Yup, looks great. Definitely a sort of take on Apocalypse. I guess Jake Solomon was serious when he said he didn't care for Terror from the Deep? I didn't imagine him saying that before right?

TFTD really was a reskinned XCOM. It might as well have been a total conversion mod.

Enemy Unknown -> Enemy Within had more new elements than UFO Defense -> TFTD

But the controller implementation was brilliant and totally surpassed the need for kb+m in the PC version.
That's indicative of the problem really IMHO.

For gamepad controls to be better than M/KB in a strategy game like this doesn't just require the gamepad controls to be good, it also requires the M/KB controls to be far from ideal. Which was sadly the case with XCOM.

I legitimately can't believe this isn't coming to consoles. I don't even have a PC that can play games, but I suppose I can play it on my MacBook? Far less than ideal. Why would they abandon console players, I wonder?

This is amazing news. I loved the last XCOM. I wonder how the last one sold on consoles that they've decided to abandon those platforms altogether.

Does not make since to release a console version this November AT ALL due to the typical holiday lineup that actually SELLS on consoles. I could see a release in the future though.

Pretty excited for this. Really surprised it's PC exclusive. I can't imagine why they would choose to do that. I'm primarily on PC but I thought the console versions of EU/EW did quite well. I'm sure we'll see it on console early next year though. But regardless, day one.

I'd assume they going to go into much more depth with the mechanics to the point where it just isn't going to work out well with a controller. I'd also take a guess that the modding support is going to be integral. Part of making it PC exclusive may be in part to help encourage PC users to dig into it and its modding support; it has the potential to go much in the same way that has been seen with other strong mod support such as Cities Skylines.

I'll play this on my
Alienware Alpha
console. Can't wait! EU was freaking superb and probably the best value I've gotten for any game ever, since I got it for free for answering a poll.

In terms of story possibilities (spinning off from the resistance bit), there's a lot of interesting potential, especially in a "terrorists vs. freedom fighters" sort of way. It looks like most people in the city are happy; where's XCOM's motivation to keep fighting? Is it fueled (partly) by sheer hatred of the aliens?

Hoping they go into that a little bit.

Well, I don't think there's going to be much "deep" ideological debate to be had. It's obvious that XCOM knows more than the public does about what's going on, and that the aliens have hidden evil agendas for wanting to co-exist with humans rather than just killing everyone. What will probably be interesting is having to expose the truth to get people on your side, failing which XCOM will be seen as terrorists which will get run out of cities by the common people yeah. The aliens will still clearly be evil and XCOM will be good. This isn't going to be Spec Ops The Line!

Mods and procedurally generated maps, jesus wept i feel like i am in a dream. This is the best gaming news i have had in years, to say i am excited is an understatement.

PC only is good news. As nice as EU was to play on a controller, the game really could have benefited from a more fleshed out PC interface.

"available exclusively on PC this November"

Does not seem worded to say it's forever an exclusive. It will hit consoles in 2016, that's my bet.

Pretty cool I guess.
Wasn't a fan of the first one but I'd definitely give this a chance once it goes on sale

Hell yeah!

Console gamers do not despair, from the look of it, the game can be run on a toaster.

Finally, a second XCOM game!

Hmmm. Finally a second second XCOM game? Terror from the Deep was disappointing enough that I'm going to wait it out this time and see if it's either (a) more of same and thus unnecessary, (b) forgetting why the original was so brilliant by making the wrong changes, or (c) an actual worthy successor.

Gameplay promises sound good, graphics look...ok.

I'm sure console versions are coming down the line... or they might be going into a Civ5/Civ Rev direction?

That'd be kinda exciting and open up some more opportunities for the PC version.

A little disappointed it's not Terror from the Deep (with proper difficulty balancing) but I like their direction here too. "XCOM 2" though. It's like the 12th game in the series and not the second mainline either.

It happens. Look at Tomb Raider (2013), it's just called Tomb Raider despite numerous games in the series. Another example would be Kingdom Hearts 3, the eighth or so game in the series, despite carrying the "3" moniker.

I'm assuming it would be something like "Aliens are pretending to coexist peacefully but we've discovered that they're secretly trying to subjugate humans but no one believes us"

Well, judging by that trailer, it seemed the aliens had psychic control over the key members of the populace so there's that. And the biggest one, most non-combatants really don't care who's ruling over as long as their needs are met. Seeing how the aliens are trying a carrot approach, I don't think people care if their leader has normal skin or scaly skin.

Lack of any real plot made it difficult for me to progress through the first game. Hopefully we get some world building and memorable characters this time around.

I really, really hope you don't get your wish.

PC only is interesting. Hoping it means a more complex game but I would assume it really just means they have a relatively small team working on it and don't want to commit too much to doing multiple versions at launch.

I don't think it's crazy to thank the Long War guys for shaping the direction of this title somewhat. The way the mod community took EU2012 and ran with it may have shown 2K/Firaxis that there was a big appetite for mods, maps, etc. out there.

Looking forward to IGN's content, and it's awesome to think this is only five or six months away.

For a game with no official mod support, the Long War mod is a monumental achievement.

Triumphant even. XCOM Long War might be one of the best strategy games ever made.

I was actually worried that Firaxis was trying to staff up and make some kind of monster AAA game as a sequel to XCOM and I didn't think that would work for the franchise or the company. It's clear they aren't going that route and I think the game will be far better for it in the long run.

This was a big influence but I would say that Civ5 has a bigger impact all-around. Everything about XCOM2 is taking the Civ 5 business model-PC exclusive, highly moddable-that Firaxis knows and putting it into XCOM.

Wholy fucking shit, this is the greatest news in the history of June 1st 2015.
This year? YES. YEEEES.

Sucks for console players though, hope they'll release a console version later.

It's weird that this is a PC exclusive.

They made a version of the last one for mobile devices. You'd imagine they'd continue down that path.

Further down in the article-

"And, later this week we’ll go in-depth with Solomon and DeAngelis on the reasons behind the bold move to take XCOM from a multiplatform series to a PC exclusive..."

Doesn't sound like they're planning on a console release.

Might not have sold well there. Shadowrun devs, for instance, ditched it for Hong Kong because the effort wasn't worth it.

nobody is port begging, this isn't a case of a major console putting money into the game and people getting butt hurt over it.

This game came out on consoles before, so there is disapointment for those who wish it was a simutanious release.

I'm sure like before it will come out on consoles, just later.

It's only allowed if the game is a PC exclusive or people beg for a Vita release of a game.

Of course I am kidding. I wouldn't call this port begging honestly.

There are posts saying "why isn't this on consoles I wish I could play this on my ps4 I hope they port it later"

Port hoping means the same exact thing as port begging. Just btw

Correct me if I'm wrong but I totally don't see the XCOM aliens being ones that would set up a controlling government. They'd just want to fuck shit up.

Not crazy at all. AFAIK, the Firaxis XCOM team has been vocal in their praise for Long War.

Mobile base?

I wonder how they'll handle base invasion missions.

I'm wondering how they handle base customization. Maybe have the flying base be some kind of stolen incomplete prototype? Like, the rooms are all their, but you first need to clean them up and fit them out to your specs?
