Further down in the article-

"And, later this week we’ll go in-depth with Solomon and DeAngelis on the reasons behind the bold move to take XCOM from a multiplatform series to a PC exclusive..."

Doesn't sound like they're planning on a console release.
Oh, welp sucks for people who wanted to continue playing these on consoles.

Welcome back...

It's weird that this is a PC exclusive.

They made a version of the last one for mobile devices. You'd imagine they'd continue down that path.

I don't think it's weird. It's obviously not going to stay a PC exclusive. No one believes that. It'll be a PC exclusive when it is released in November. Probably indicative of Firaxis wanting to focus on a single platform first, and push the user generated content via Steam Workshop, etc. Once the game is completed and out there and getting polished, I'm sure they'll announce it for PS4/XB1, along with specific deals with the platform holders on how to handle the sharing of user generated content on their systems.

More classes? Procedural generation and better mod support? A bold and simple "2" instead of a lame subtitle? Fantastic news.

I'm sad for console players, but this is the best use of a gif yet.

Yeah procedural generation and super mod support plus lack of concern about console tropes has me super excited.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I totally don't see the XCOM aliens being ones that would set up a controlling government. They'd just want to fuck shit up.

Their whole goal was to make a super-alien based on human genetics. They got their asses kicked, proving their initial hypothesis worthwhile. Seems to make sense to go back to the drawing board with a plan less likely to get their purple insides exploded all over the outside of their ship.

Yup. No way they pass on the console dollars forever.

Did you ever finish a campaign? The entire setup for EU was the mastermind aliens trying to find a species worthy of uplifting, they weren't trying to just slaughter people. Humanity was their newest test species.

Granted, it's very likely with their defeat at the end of EU that whatever's in control in 2 might be a different faction.

It'll arrive on consoles in 2016.

Till then, I wait.

If it doesn't have controller support and expands on the kb+m controls, I think that would indicate it won't ever come to consoles.

Personally, I loved playing EU with a controller so I hope this doesn't happen.

Yeah, I think you're onto something there.

Not crazy at all. AFAIK, the Firaxis XCOM team has been vocal in their praise for Long War.

They even helped them make custom voice packs, as well as gave them the original voice files for Van Doorn(a minor character that became a bit of a running joke among xcom players).

Yea. Nobody could say that games like Wasteland 2, Divinity Original Sin, or Elite Dangerous weren't made for the PC only. But they're all coming to consoles soon.

I've seen comparisons between Xcom and Valkyria Chronicles, and since I LOVED VC; I was wondering which of this games should I play next.

I have on my Steam backlog (probably because of some Humble Bundle or shit like that):
- UFO defense
- Terror from the deep
- Apocalypse
- Interceptor
- Enforcer

Should I play all of them? Are any of them bad? Should I play the last one first because of new controls? Discard all of them and buy Enemy Unknown or Declassified?

Disliked the first one mainly due to the (bad) terror missions, spawning aliens and lack of base defense, I hope they put more thought into this game. I also disappointed that this isn't a Terror of the Deep remake which was the best X-com, yeah I said it, come at me bro.

I dunno, that dude at the end is pretty clearly related to a Sectoid. Could just be that the Ethereals rejiggered the old formulae to present a fresh face.

Unless they weren't defeated? Maybe this sequel is based on the assumption that XCOM failed in the first game? Bad end route.

I got introduced to XCOM on PS3 and really loved it. Even got the platinum trophy. To hear that the sequel is PC only is pretty disappointing (and surprising) to say the least... :(

Oh well, enjoy PC gamers, I'm sure it'll be awesome!

That doesn't mean that it won't hit consoles later

Completely depends on what they are actually doing. That statement is indicative of a specific focus on PC, most likely meaning much more depth to its mechanics and likely making mods integral to the game. Xcom Long War is a great demonstration of what could be done without the support.

On top of that, keep in mind they could always do console specific versions of their games to suit the platforms, similar to Civ Revolutions rather than full blown Civ

Very surprised that this is PC-only.

Is this a sign that large publishers are starting to believe that big-budget PC-exclusive titles are viable again?

I wonder if this is a reflection of the sales figures for the first XCOM. I knew lots of people (including myself) who bought a console version, but I wonder if that wasn't indicative of the console:pC skew after all.

But, hey, if focusing only on PC enables the team to make the game with all the features they want, all the more power to them. Maybe they'll do an XB1/PS4 port afterwards and scale down what they need to rather than compromise the original vision they're working towards right now.

They are probably trying to give it wings like Civ 5 with the PC-exclusivity. I do think we will see the game elsewhere in SOME form eventually.

Hopefully the interface isn't ass this time.
