You now can get Refunds on Steam

God, how many "recommend me a game I can buy on Steam and beat in under 2 hours" threads are we going to get?

That said, this is awesome. I wish sales figures were shared. I bet this leads to an Increase In Revenue, not a decrease.

On the other hand if that does become a thing, it could just lead to forcing devs to make games that are not completable in 2 hours

Finally. I wish I could retroactively get refunds for games though. I bought Gunhound EX and it doesn't work with any controller I have.

Hopefully this will be the end of everyone complaining about the low-effort Early Access garbage.

Now not only can people get their money back if they are unable with an Early Access game, but Steam can de-promote stuff based on how many people are asking for refunds.

It won't because 90 percent of the people that whine about Early Access have like next to no experience with it.

VAC Bans
If you have been banned by VAC (the Valve Anti-Cheat system) on a game, you lose the right to refund that game.

Hahahahaha, brilliant - just make sure VAC has no false positives

I'll try my refund for Resident Evil 6 again. It was denied the first time.

Depends, when did you buy it?

That's pretty great. I figured that would be the case, but having it in plain text kind of makes me laugh.

The 2 requirements:
-Bought within the last 14 days
-Played for 2 hours or less

Seems reasonable to me
And they'll be loose about the rules case-by-case. Probably for cases like Uplay games that "run" for hours because Uplay was up, and there's achievements to show if you were REALLY playing over 2 hours, cloud saves too. Then I guess there's stuff like game breaking bugs that show up in 10 hours of play or whatever.

...if the request is made within fourteen days of purchase, and the title has been played for less than two hours.

I wish that was an "or" instead of "and". So many games on my list I haven't even touched...

Fantastic news.

Yeah, Idlemaster will need to be adjusted to exclude games with under 2 hours playtime to avoid accidentally using up that refundable time.

Eh, I don't think that would be worth the dev time honestly. You can get the play time data from HLTB but the problem is matching their IDs with Steam IDs needs to be done somewhat manually. Even if you could write some kind of name matching script you would still need to fill in some holes manually. I don't know. For free software that seems like a lot of extra work for the dev.

This would have saved me about $100 over the last few years. Most of my games with less than two hours I always expected to play again sometime, but I would have gotten refunds for Mark of the Ninja, Strike Vector, War of the Roses, Primal Carnage, Reflex, Ziggurat, Jazzpunk, and Ori and the Blind Forest.

This is brilliant. I have often passed on PC games because I didn't know how they'd run on my system, so this should remove a lot of the pain.

Fuck me that's going to be a thing for a bit isn't it?

Well like the FAQ says if they abuse it they won't be able to do it any longer.

Last year, but I made the request within fourteen days of purchase, and the title had been played for less than two hours xD

so i can get 2 hours of free games for everything? cool

Until they revoke your privileges because you refunded 4 games in one day like a dummy.

I wish that was an "or" instead of "and". So many games on my list I haven't even touched...
Maybe you should buy games you will play or have time to play rather than them just being cheap.

Oh. You know what? It might just work.

I like this nugget.

We do not consider it abuse to request a refund on a title that was purchased just before a sale and then immediately rebuying that title for the sale price.

That will come in handy i recon.

And Fallout teaser page is up, Dark Souls 3 rumor. E3 is in the air XD

It's pre-E3 all right

Games with day1 issues, those stupid greenlight games Jimquisitino covers, or games with bad PR before their launch... are fucked.

EA was pretty much the first to have a refund policy and the customer service is actually really reliable unlike Steam.

then came GOG. i had them return witcher 3 because i said "i wanted to buy a 980 which came with a key anyways" and they actually let me return it. so yea =/

also i never did buy that 980 =|

This is a good one:

Abuse
Refunds are designed to remove the risk from purchasing titles on Steam—not as a way to get free games. If it appears to us that you are abusing refunds, we may stop offering them to you. We do not consider it abuse to request a refund on a title that was purchased just before a sale and then immediately rebuying that title for the sale price.

Too bad, no more making fun of people not waiting for the daily deals.

This needs to be a thing for PSN. I'm all digital right now on PS4, and I've got burnt from a couple of games that I thought I'd like. Now those games are just sitting there.

I hope people won't abuse the two hour policy, since especially in the indie space there are tons of games you can get the full experience in two hours.

Two hours feels short enough to me that I don't think people will bother to do something like that. I know there are shorter games out there, but probably not a lot that you can completely and fully experience in (just under) two hours. Not to mention a game that succinct will probably not be all that expensive to begin with.

I suppose people will take advantage of whatever they can, though.

Looking at this from a "oops, this runs like garbage on my machine" or "I am not feeling this game AT ALL" perspective makes way more sense to me, which is obviously Valve's intent with it.

Thinking back on my purchases I don't think there are many games where I would have said "I need a refund". Maybe Saints Row III on my old machine, but even that was from a humble bundle anyway.

Everyone who doesn't own Bad Rats should immediately go buy Bad Rats, play for 5 minutes, and then ask for a refund. It's the only way to stop the madness.

Wow, fairplay.

Take fucking note Sony.

I love this post. Maybe people will get lucky and this will be automated.

I wouldn't be surprised that anything within the 14 days/2 hours usage rules goes into an automated refund system, i would bet the support staff will only deal with things outside of these 2 rules.
