Fallout 3 and New Vegas mod discussion

First time player here.

What mods do I install if I don't want gameplay mods?

I'm mainly looking for improvements in the UI, Map, Textures and bug fixes.

check out the list i made above

it's got a good number of useful mods i think

Any mods that take the music from Fallout 1 and 2 in place of whats there in New Vegas?

That interface mod looks so much better than default in action.
didn't you know, new vegas already has music from fo1 and 2 in it :>

This game is a fucking mess on PC.

I installed all the mods from that reddit thread, used the "LOOT" thing which seems to do nothing but give me errors, and the game just freezes every 10 minutes.

Better yet when it freezes you can't end the process or close the program because it basically makes the mouse unusable in alt-tab or alt ctrl del, so you have to restart every time it crashes.

Mods are always the worst. I don't ever recall having a good experience other than durante's stuff.

LOOT doesn't totally ensure a perfect order. You'll have to look at your list and get a sense of of what needs to placed in order. Asking for help from others or looking at tutorials is also important.

I'm still getting problems with my game, and that's after four years of playing mods.

I've only got my install up and running properly today after probably 3 hours of fucking around and frustration, and I know what I'm doing for the most part. It can be daunting and a pain in the arse at times, but it's totally worth it in the end.

Something's wrong if Loot is saying your Fallout3.esm is inactive. So let me ask a few questions.

Is this a fresh install of Fallout 3, or was it previously modded?
Is it the Steam version?
If you are running the Steam version, can you try and validate the game cache? Your Fallout3.esm might be corrupted. Right click on Fallout 3, then go to Properties, then Local Files then Verify Integrity of Game Cache...see if this works.

I'd also try deleting your Fallout 3 folder from "My Documents/My Games/Fallout3" then restarting the game, it will regenerate the folder and all new files so you have the default .ini settings(I had to do this today). See how you go.

It's a new installation of fallout 3. I'm going to try the things you suggested.

No matter what I do it just says "This plugin requires "Fallout3.esm" to be active, but it is inactive." and that's for all the base game .ESM files..

I give up. Going back to the witcher.

what do u mean

getting a weird grey skin tone on portion of the face and it doesn't match the body, I thought it was my settings.. but I've tried making multiple characters with different shades/sliders or the default templates and was getting the same thing, they don't look the same as the character in the creator.

People's characters I see looks way better and I've tried using those weird anime/doll presets too and it came out the same :(

hmm maybe i'm not remembering correctly but i think that's how it's supposed to look

not 100% sure

Do you think it would be an ok idea to create a new thread?

What i really want is a list of mods that positively affect the experience from a graphics/usability standpoint and cause minimal extra crashes or bugs, along with a load order to use them in.

I don't even care if it's missing things like the ENB or whatever, I just want a list of good mods that cause minimal hassle and what order to load them in.

I never played the DLCs for Fallout 3 and that's my main reason for trying to get back into it.

I might've posted about this before, but I'm trying to use an ENB and dear god it's a nightmare to get working. Followed instructions to the letter and I'm still getting random texture transparencies. I'll just be walking around and all of a sudden the world's mostly clear. So frustrating.

I'm hoping Bethesda has a bigger hand in mod support for Fallout 4.

usually what causes the world to start vanishing with ENB is the steam overlay

also AA being on will cause some weird shit

i'd help but i don't know much about fo3

Started looking at it and my eyes glazed over.
yea not a big fan of that guide either, too comprehensive

Ooh I haven't tried disabling the Steam overlay. I'll try that in a bit.

edit: Holy shit that did it. Thanks a ton! I've been trying to get ENBs working forever now, can't believe it was this simple.

I uninstalled and redownloaded fallout 3 and started it completely from new.

It froze before I could name my character.

It is amazing that they are able to sell and promote this on steam as a working product. Maybe if you have windows 7 it's better?

What OS are you using? Works fine for me on 8.1.

Sounds like the multicore limit. i think thats just an ini edit to fix that.

Yep, and I know the answer. I am playing it right now on my rig and went through the exact same thing. The problem is apparently with a patch they did, which has trouble with quad core CPU's.

To fix it, pay careful attention to the path here:

Step 1)
Open up the fallout.ini file in: My Documents\My Games\Fallout3
Find the line:
bUseThreadedAI=0
change it to:
bUseThreadedAI=1
Add another line after it and insert:
iNumHWThreads=2
This will limit the game to 2 cores and prevent the engine bug from causing the game to freeze.

Step 2)
Download and install the latest klite codec pack from here:
http://download.cnet.com/K-Lite-Mega-Codec-Pack/3000-13...

Did those two things and this game has played perfect since. And I absolutely LOVE this game. It's like a combination of Bioshock and STALKER, but with a better story and more imaginative monsters and environment.

I was getting the same problem when using all the fan patches and mods. It stops in place and when you alt tab out you can't even end the process because the window takes priority over the rest of the screen, so you have to restart. It's a fucking nightmare to get this game working, let alone modded.

I'm honestly thinking about doing a clean install of my game and all the mods for F3 and NV. I've been out of the game for a bit, and I'm pretty sure some of my mod listing is either outdated or just out of wack. I can't even play NV anymore because all I get is either the Out of Memory hard crash at the beginning or a game freeze.

I feel like it's the best course of action at this point. Plus, I could never get the ENB stuff to work, so this might be the best way to do so.

Started looking at it and my eyes glazed over.
Yeah it's a bit overwhelming if you've never modded before but it's there to help with that.

i don't think so, just look up the posts here or use one of the easily available guides

How is that bad that it's too comprehensive? It's a good starting point.

i'm kind of tired of people asking me which mods to install so i'm making my list of essential mods!

I'm going to try this modding thing again for NV and I'll just get some of the mods from this list and maybe add one or two more. Don't want to add a whole lot of crap. Just want the game to look nice.

Getting the same issue, is this maybe a new LOOT issue? (I'm running version v0.7.0)

Edit: Nevermind, seems to have gone away now that I've started setting up all the mods.

Is there a guide like that? I'm pretty experienced with modding so that step one was pretty great for me but I'd like to see other guides too.
not 100% sure, but probably

not saying the guide you posted was bad or anything, i just think it's maybe a bit daunting for new players who maybe just want the essentials

i think my list might be a bit disappointing if u want the game to look nice

got u covered on the gameplay side tho!

Gonna do a TTW playthrough, not getting TOO crazy with mods but Im using:

EVE (for ttw)
Interiors project (for ttw)
TTW fixes (ttw bug fix pack for the original f3/nv bugs NOT TTW-created bugs)
NV Bounties 1 and 2, and The Inheritance
New Vegas Uncut mods, and The Strip Open (by same author)
NMC Textures (for F3 and NV, along with the ttw cleanup scripts by Roy Batty)

so nothing really touching F3 (besides eve, and interiors), and a few new vegas mods but not even using project nevada, or jesawyer

Should be a nice heaving pile of wtf but gonna stick with that and see how I can get before Fallout 4.

cant remember anymore if a merged patch really matters.

It's a problem with the shitty engine. Neck seams have always been an issue with Gamebryo, though Skyrim alleviated it somewhat. I believe that bodies and faces use different textures, making character mods a huge pain in the ass due to non-matching skintones.

shot in the dark try disabling, re-enabling archive invalidation with fomm

That's too bad, because the end result is incredibly stable, with a hugely enhanced game experience.

Ive been modding bethesda games since (well morrowind I guess) and even I went Oh nevermind.... especially when I saw Mod Organizer (IN MY FALLOUT NEW VEGAS!?)

Getting FCOM working back in the day was an era I just never want to go back to. :D

Archive Invalidation fixes the severe skin differences, but you'll never be rid of the neck seams. That's why neck seam concealer mods exist that add necklaces to NPCs.

Also Mod Organizer is an incredible tool, takes some getting used to but you end up with a much better organized mod directory that you can more easily customize and re-arrange without affecting the game's core data files.

I downloaded the Mod Organizer and clicked on the button "Associate Download with Manager Links" yet when I try that on the nexus it doesn't work.

go to the settings menu - nexus tab and put your pasword from nexus in there .

Then click on the globe to go to nexus site and try it again .

yah I used it a bit for skyrim, but I spend more time modding bethesda games than playing them anymore so for this ttw playthrough Im like NO!, maybe Ill be more motivated by F4.

Although starting with F3 I playthrough the games unmodded first. then go back with mods later.

I had trouble with Mod Organizer and my draw distance for grass/textures/general LOD. No matter how much I messed with the .ini it stayed below console levels. I'm going to try it again soon though.

Please stop blaming the product. It has worked fine for me on Windows Vista, 7, 8 and 8.1 over the years.

There's nothing wrong with mods, and Durante's visual mods are hardly anything like the overhauls, additions and modifications we see for Bethesda games, nor are they as complex to configure or install. If there were 100,000 variations of Durante's mods that all conflicted, and you wanted 40 of them at once, it might be worth comparing.

Looking at your load order above, it doesn't even look as if the mods are active as there are no ticks next to them, so unless you're managing them in something else, that'd be the first thing to look at.

It really pisses me off at how people approach modding this way, then blame the game and mods because they can't get it working properly. Not only that, but they do it publicly which leads to more misinformation about mods. If you want it to work properly, you're going to have to invest the time into reading how it all works. Mods, patches, load orders, and the appropriate apps to manage them all.

LOOT isn't a magical tool either. It will do what it can, but it's still up to you to go through each mod (again, in the right app, of which there are plenty of with plenty of documentation) and try to spot conflicts and resolve them (again, by reading about how to do this). It cannot predict and manage every mod configuration in existence. That is impossible.

It's also important to go through the documentation for every mod as the author will often put in notes as to what else you might have to do (ini edits etc) to get it working, as well as mentioning any conflicts and places to get patches.

The Nexus has PLENTY of resources for this, as well as a forum to ask questions about whatever you may be confused with. That's how I and thousands of others have learned. There's no 5 minute install process that's going to get you through it all without issues. Some modding, like with Skyrim for example, will take me ~15hrs to sort out due to patches and incompatibilities. And I know what I'm doing.

Educate yourself before simply throwing your hands in the air and blaming everything else. Your posts, and some other posts on the last few pages, are ridiculous, I cringe while reading them. If you're able to read, and willing to invest the time, there's no excuse.

Were you editing the ini file in your documents folder, or the one in your Mod Organizer profile?

Why is it doing this??

The fact that Fallout3.esm isn't even active suggests a lot of incompetence on your part rather than the mods. If you're serious about modding your game, follow this guide. It's wordy as hell, sure, but if you want to mod your game without it crashing on a frequent basis, and causing all sorts of conflicts, it's the way to go. I used to have to deal with constant bullshit when modding, and my last playthrough of New Vegas after using the guide was shockingly stable and mostly crash-free.

That was the case for me with Skyrim, that game is just boring as fuck even with tons of mods installed. New Vegas though, so much cool stuff that enhances and adds to an already great RPG. New Vegas Bounties II alone is worth it.

On the account I've played and beaten Fallout: NV, always avoided Fallout 3.. but Fallout 4 is coming and I'd really like to play 3.

I currently run Windows 8.1

Alright, so I installed Fallout 3 (& the 1.7 patch of course) using Windows Vista compatibility settings..

when I try to run the Fallout 3 Launcher, I get an error popup that says "The ordinal 5359 could not be located in the dynamic link library"

help?
