Fallout 3 and New Vegas mod discussion

The number of New Vegas mods is... intimidating. I'm about to do my first NW playthrough. What are the must-have mods or should I play straight up?

So far, I have downloaded Nevada Skies... but not sure about rest...

Generally, I would recommend that you avoid heavily modding any games the first time around. I would just stick with Yukichigai Unofficial Patch - YUP.

However, if you really want to go all out with modding just follow the link ZzzZombi posted:

The guides over at STEP cover pretty much everything you'd need in terms of mods and tweaks. They're also fairly up-to-date. For Fallout 3 and for Fallout New Vegas.

For the most part, you can just pick and choose which mods you want. The mods listed in the guide are all pretty good.

Dick Justice posted this earlier:

I'd really recommend not using Mission Mojave, it makes a lot of unnecessary changes, and Yukichigai's patch does a much better job of fixing bugs, with far less bloat.

I'd also recommend using Realistic Wasteland Lighting instead of Nevada Skies, less weather patterns but it looks a lot better IMO.

Install Anti Crash and Stutter Remover too.

For visuals, take a look at this list (don't bother with Hall of Equipment, the mod author just doubled the size of vanilla textures and threw some filters on, so they look shitty).

For top priority, I'd say install Poco Bueno, and place it below NMC in your mod list. Interior Lighting Overhaul does a great job with interior lights.

anywhere to download the fallout 3 mods other then nexus?

i signed up and apparently all new registrations have to go through an approval process before you can validate, and it can take a while

I think there are some scattered around on random websites (you can probably just google the mod names to find them).

I don't remember my registration with the Nexus taking that long (it was years ago)... Certainly wasn't like registering for NeoGAF.

I've finished cleaning everything, and LOOT reports only a few minor issues.

The game seems to work well but i'm still getting the red boxes on some characters, and the "nude" versions of characters after you steal their clothes from bodies has some strange texture issues, but that might just be normal.

I got to the school and tried to clear it out but got crippled and had to turn back. It's a pretty harrowing experience, and the added darkness at night adds a lot. The game feels like a very new game, like a HD remaster with loads of added features. using ironsights feels a lot better too and the new weapons and sounds are awesome.

What are the benefits of using 4GB NV? I get a random stutter in-game every now and then, will it fix that? I'm using a lot of mods and an ENB, organized with NMM.

edit: just installed it, but my ENB isn't working. Weird.

So moira brown and several other wastelanders get the big red box on them.

when i kill them and take their clothes the box goes away.

Not all the NPCs have the red box.

What mod might i need to fix?

I spent several hours installing and testing graphical mods for New Vegas following a couple of guides, and the game played fine until I got to Forlorn Hope and the Hoover Dam. The models started to show through each other and the geometry, and suddenly I could see Boone's head through his hat. It looked fine if I left the area, but everything glitched around there. I turned off the mods and uninstalled the NMC textures, and it fixed some tearing that may have been memory issues in the area, but most of the problems are still there. I can see the river right through the ground, and tents tear right through each other.

I would just reinstall and start over if it had happened at the beginning of the game, but I'm now hours in, and I'd rather fix it if I can.

Any that adds clothing.

Assuming it's not a New Vegas bug (which I really doubt), transparency issues can be caused by ENB's. Are you using one?

So I'm trying to get the FO3 Weapon Restoration mod to work for New Vegas but it hasn't loaded for some reason? Any help?

What do you mean hasn't loaded? I assume you mean you tried to spawn the weapons and it didn't work?

Yeah like none of the weapons have appeared in the game at all.

If you can't even spawn the weapons using the console, it could be that the mod is buggy (But the author seems very thorough), the install was done improperly, or another mod could add those weapons as well and gave them different id's.

Double check you installed the BSA and meshes correctly. If that doesn't work, move the ESP to the bottom of your load order for priority. If that's no good, I dunno. A recommendation then is that Project Nevada's equipment module worked fine for me, and it adds the same weapons.

Got pretty frustrated trying to play FO3 earlier, kept crashing every 5 minutes. Not really digging some of the hoops you have to go through for some of the mods. Going to give it another try again tomorrow.

Have you done the multicore fix? Fixed my crashing in New Vegas

Go to My Documents\My Games\Fallout3
open fallout.ini
Find the line:
bUseThreadedAI=0
change it to:
bUseThreadedAI=1
Add another line after it and insert:
iNumHWThreads=2

Dc interiors is crashing on start up for some reason. Have archive and fose installed so there should be no problems

Crashing on start up usually means you're missing an ESM that the mod needs to run.

First comment on the mod's page: "Found a work around for the weird goty crashing. rename the esp file "zzdcinteriors", sounds weird but adding those two z's fixed it for me." Try that. And if it works, use "tmm 1" in the console to see all map markers and check to make sure the locations that should be there are there.

I also don't think it would need Archive Invalidation or FOSE.

Finally, after weeks of trying to fix the radio stutter bug in FO3 with zero success, I found the culprit!

I had Tversity installed and it turns out that it's codecs are messing with the mp3 playback in the game. I uninstalled it and everything is running smoothly.

I tried Fallout 3 ENB yesterday after playing around with ENB for Skyrim last year but Fallout 3 just looked awful. I'm not sure if it's something that I'm doing wrong or if I'm just expecting too much but the colours were far too rich and bright.

I tried using a combination of Midhrastic ENB and Fellout plus the realistic lighting mod but I thought the game actually looked better when I switched the ENB off using Shift+F12 if I'm honest.

If anybody can tell me where I'm going wrong or offer some tips though then that would be great. I'm ideally looking for a more natural and photo-realistic style of visuals.

You should only mix visual mods when you know they'll work together. ENB's and lighting/weather mods often look less than desirable when they aren't made to work together.

That's the only advice I have, otherwise just pick what you like.

CONFLICTING MODS

If you want to experience this ENB as intended, first disable and remove any mods that change the lighting and postprocessing such as Fellout (greener grass option is okay), The Imaginator, DYNAVISION, Director's Chair, Enhanced Shaders, CINEMATECH. Some aspects of these mods can be compatible with ENB, whereas others may not be. You are free to experiment, but the advice is to turn these off before your first try with ENB. Other lighting mods that do work well together with this config include F3Project Reality MkI, Realistic Interior Lighting, Megaton Lighting Overhaul, Light of Night and probably very many others. There will also be a lot of mods that won't conflict or work well, but just won't work at all. Mods such as Advanced Recon Thermal Nightvision won't work. You can install them, but if you want to see their effects, you'll have to switch off ENB postprocessing (SHIFT+F12). This has to do with how ENB bypasses the game's original colour correction. That's just the way it is.

Just tried that, it seemingly made it worse. First launch it crashed within 10 seconds of being in the game. The second time it crashed within 3 minutes.

The mods that add dead trees to the landscape is awesome..same with the darker nights and streetlights. Its like a whole new game.

Don't forget the mods that add color:

fixed dc interiors. Note to people downloading mods from the nexus, don't just like the download button at the top for the NMM. Actually go to the files and make sure you're grabbing the one you want. I accidentally downloaded just the esp instead of the esm

Not just that, but read the descriptions in case of compatibility issues and whatnot.

So I think I've figured it out.

Any NPCs that have the .22 pistol have the exclamation points on them.

When i kill them and remove the pistol they don't have it. When i equip it, i have it.

Must be something to do with the pistol.

it seems like there was a problem with one of the weapon modification addons where the 32 snub nose pistol mesh was named incorrectly, (the .nif file for it). That's what's causing the red boxes and exclamation points.

when i drop one on the ground, there it is. If i equip one, it follows me, and for some reason my hair randomly disappears.

Any ideas? do i need to unpack the .bsa for fallout 3 and rename the 32 snub nose .nif file? i have no idea what im doing.

trying to use new vegas redesigned 3 but im getting pink faces

Did you install Fallout character overhaul first ?

FNVR 3 requires it.

You also need to delete some files with FNVEdit to make the 2 work without issues like pink faces .

Follow this :

Select FNVEdit from the executable dropdown in Mod Organizer.
When FNVEdit loads, right click the mod list and choose "Select None".
Find FCOMaster.esm in the list of mods and tick the check box for it, then click [OK].
After the mods finish loading, expand FCOMaster.esm->Non-Player Character.
Highlight every record that begins with "00" and delete them. Leave any record that starts with something other than "00".
Close FNVEdit and save FCOMaster.esm.

Lastly make sure you go to your fallout ini file in documents / my games / fallout ( or the inin file in you profile if using MO ) and check that bLoadFaceGenHeadEGTFiles= is put to 1 under display .

anyone have any ini-settings tips for New Vegas?

I am not satisfied with the current settings in which the draw distance is too low for me. But I am unsure of wich parameters to change or add. I have found mostly information about fallout 3 and some do not apply or have changed name in NV.

Also, should I let ugrids alone or is it safe to increase it?

I have around 100 mods right now and am using both Ojo Bueno and NMC

I'm interested in this as well.

Not sure IF this is mod related but I thought project Nevada allowed for more companions. I am at the Mohave outpost barracks and I can't get an option to ask Cass to be a companion. Is it a bug or do I need to go further in the game? The little I googled made me think she could be a companion at the first meeting.

You can't get her at first meeting, there's some quests you need to follow first, specifically one you get from talking to her the first time.

thanx for the heads up, transferred everything to mod organizer and it worked

seems like nmm is pretty obsolete these days

Just tried that, it seemingly made it worse. First launch it crashed within 10 seconds of being in the game. The second time it crashed within 3 minutes.

As a follow up - I did a fresh install and got everything going.

I tried a couple mods to make the pip boy map a bit more colorful but they all made my game crash.

Thanks but I ran the ENB on it's own first and it looked awful that's why I added the others. Maybe I just need to try a different ENB.

What puzzled me is that ENB running on mine looks nothing like the screenshots on the mod's Nexus page.

Probably very selective screenshots. A lot of ENBs tend to look like shit except for particular circumstances.

Modding this game is a nightmare.

Ive spent probably 5 hours or more going through the STEP guide.

The game was very stable but a model was missing for the .32 pistol and causing red exclamation boxes.

Spent another 2 hours fixing that.

Fixed it.

Game now crashes within 10 seconds of loading my character, or a new character. And i have edited the .INI file to add the fix.

I GIVE UP FUCK ALL OF THIS

I'm starting New Vegas for the first time and I scanned the topic for the basic tweaks/fixes and graphics enhancements, but my question is should I use the Nexus Mod Manager (I used it for Dragon Age Origins without any problems) or FOMM?

The mods I selected:
- NVAC - New Vegas Anti Crash
- New Vegas Stutter Remover
- 4GB Fallout New Vegas Updated
- Fallout New Vegas Redesigned 2
- Nevada Skies
- NMCs_Texture_Pack_For_New_Vegas
- POCO BUENO Texture Pack
- Interior Lighting Overhaul

Any other recommendations?

Thanks!

p.s, I don't own any DLC (may buy some if they get good discounts in the Summer Sale).
