Has a story in a jrpg ever moved you?

Mother 2.

Where he says "I miss you" at the ending's song always tears at my emo heart.

The game itself, I suppose moves me, rather than the story. The idea of missing your mom while you're out on adventure. Too close to home.

Oh and hahaha I'm such a wuss. But in FF9
when Zidane asks Dagger to marry him
made my eyes water. Yeah I'm man enough to admit it.

But then I played The Answer mode...

A lot of people didn't understand the ending when they first saw it, including me. The entire game is filled with foreshadowing, but the way the ending itself is handled is actually quite subtle.

When I finish a JRPG, the first thing I do is go online and check FAQs to see what side quests and secrets I missed. That was when I found out what really happened in the end, so I rewatched the ending scenes on YouTube. I also felt pretty dense; there's just so much foreshadowing that it becomes quite obvious what's happening. I was definitely moved by it; Persona 4's ending was pretty bland in comparison.

The closest was Mother 3, namely that scene in the beginning with a certain someone. I wasn't able to get past chapter 4 without loosing interest though...

But you stopped playing it before the game even really started......

Damn. I wish I had a 360 just so I could play that game.

Not ashamed to say I got teary-eyed a few times reading those stories.

Maybe you'll get a 360 down the line and get to play Lost Odyssey, SundaySounds.

First time poster long time forum stalker...anyway

Im not a big fan of jrpgs to begin with (mostly because I am terrible at them) but there has been one that definitely "moved" me

Kingdom Hearts....seriously, the CG opening and closing as well as the final level were some of the most intense gaming experiences Ive had... the final level
with the shredded up island the chance of being caught in eternal blackness
is terrifying, more so that its happening to lovable Disney characters....the fact that the final boss looks like some of the creepier FF bosses was actually really shocking

EDIT: On a side note, even though rpgs have huge epic stories, the stories I remember most are from action/adventure games (ico, sotc, MGS series, Silent Hill, Fahrenheit(excluding the last act of course))

DBLEDIT: (Freep) Im talking about the first one....gaf likes the first one, right? (please dont hit the noob for he does not understand the culture of this new and wondrous land)

You'll never know, you heartless brute.

Edit: To sn00zer: I'm not sure of the GAF hive-mind's stance on Kingdom Hearts. You might want to be careful.

Are we being serious, or are you mocking my Hearts? -.-

Hell no, im being very serious, I actually picked up KH1 and 2 day 1, I even had a Gamestop cardboard cut out of the advertising they used in the front window for KH2..... Nightmare Before Christmas and obscure Disney movie levels and FF redesigns immediately got my attention

On a side note KH2 has the overall best designed character models of any game ive played, to bad it was on of the most disappointing sequels in recent memories....pressing x =/= strategy

Please tell me you at least have played Kingdom Hearts Re: COM.

Haha, actually no....never had a GBA, so I was incredibly lost for the first 6 hours even after
Sora returns
so I had to look up CoM story online....anyway long story short, even after playing KH2 and fully reading up on CoM I conclude that the story after KH1 was to convoluted for its own good to the point where I stopped caring about certain characters (which is a big nono in 20+ hour games), but the character and world visual design was such a leap forward that I am really torn on whether or not I really enjoyed KH2

EDIT: Just to stay on topic Okami also had one of the most epic and engaging stories in recent memory (its kind of a JRPG), plus the fact that it had
two story arcs
makes it at least twice as good as a game that doesnt :lol

Mother 3 was a pretty moving game. I've never been moved to tears by it, or any other game, but it was still a beautiful story.

Chrono Trigger also had its moments, but I wouldn't call it moving.

Crying during Titanic = bitch tears.
Crying during Lord Of The Rings = man tears.

That verdict's been settled by the Nerd Defense Fund.

losing interest. you lost interest. you didn't loose interest.

Hmmm.

Well I cry during that ASPCA Sarah Mclachlan commercial. But I'm gay so I suppose I have a bit of immunity.

I found the two story arcs in Okami to be dreadful. I think the game would have been fine without defeating Orochi on four separate occasions. Aside from that, Okami did have a pretty engaging storyline, even though the game is very long.

Odin Sphere was an amazing game, both narrative wise and visuals/sound wise. Shame the ASS BROKEN FRAMERATE in the last "book" ruined the game.
The slow motion was for the epic SHUT UP YOU.

I think most of them haven't, but I was pretty young when I played FFX and VII, for example.

Lost Odyssey did make me tear up at a few points. I never finished that game...

Probably Final Fantasy 3 (USA), since it was the first RPG I ever played and I was quite taken aback by the epic-ness of it all. That part in the middle of the game where that girl (whatever her name was... Celes?) jumps off the cliff and ends up on this desolate island with just some old man... first time I can remember feeling actually depressed while playing a game... then also later, believing I had gone so far but realizing there was still so much more! Of course it also helped that FF3 turned out to be one of the greatest games ever.

I liked it a lot, it felt like one of the most complete endings to any video games I've played. After the way the first game ended it looked like it would end similar to the first, but then goes out with a happy ending!

The music helps make it worthy of manly tears.
I also thought Roxas' story was really sad how he was only used in the beginning of KH2 to bring back Sora and then he was practically disregarded the entire time.

FFVI had the
attempted suicide scene

Pfft, you're just bad at fishing.

Chrono Trigger:
Marle attempting to revive Crono
FFVIII:
Squall/Rinoa conversation in the Ragnarok
FFX:
Tidus/Yuna at the end
Mainichi Issho:
Toro searching for his parents ;_;

yes something has moved me and its called Tales of Vesperia. It was my first JRPG and numerous times I wanted to step in the fucking game and bitch slap Estelle to get her fucking ass moving, every 2 mins she was fucking crying weather I should go back or continue.

I literally just beat Lufia II last night, and I'm a little confused by the mentions its getting.

We already knew Maxim and Selan were dead, and the writing in this game is fairly atrocious. I had trouble emotionally connecting to anyone who says things like "Yes. That is the same Dekar definitely!" Music down beneath Doom Island was fuck-awesome, though.

Did you play Lufia 1 first?

Its the wrong genre for this thread, but Okami has great storytelling by any standard. It's a supreme pity the game wasn't successful. Hideki Kamiya would have made a brilliant sequel.

Doesn't make it any less affecting. Or that it should have been the only possible outcome.

Otherwise I've greatly disliked all other JRPGs.

What else have you played then?

Don't worry. I'm straight and I cry like a baby at the dumbest stuff. Those ASPCA commercials are unbearable.

I've even cried in FF8.. I am not sure why.

Aeris didn't really have much of an impact on me. As for KH1's ending, it was kinda sad. Shame KH2 tore out what soul KH1 had for the most part. I know it was mentioned already but Lost Oddysey' written stories were just amazing, and I know people had complained about how it should have been rendered and shown ingame, but I honestly don't think it would have had the same powerful and unique impact that it had. Also again as mentioned Crisis Core ending.

Definitely a specific part of Tales of Symphonia, which I have put in this spoiler box below.

I'm referring to the part of the game where Colette had no control over herself, couldn't talk, and even kicked the dogs she always loved. That part made me nearly cry.

Two stories in DQ7:

1. A robot still trying to serve its master even when all that's left of him is a pile of bones lying in the bed;

2. The story between Iwan, Pepe, and Linda.

These stories do not rely on any cinematic cutscenes, just simple movements of the character sprites and dialogues presented among the characters, but I was really touched by them. Don't really know why.

Or maybe they'll port it to PC.

Not gonna happen. :(

Golden Sun 2:
The end when the party finally returns back to their home town only to find out that it was destroyed. Of course, the important townspeople lived,
but that coupled with the credits theme really sealed the deal. I was touched.

Thought of a few other FF moments that got to me. The series is full of them, which may explain why I love it so much.

FFII - Ricard's story and the history and endangerment of the wyverns

FFV - Similarly, the story of the wind drakes and
Hiryuu's sacrifice to become the Phoenix summon.

FFVII - Many, many moments, but the one that still gets me to this day, is Seto's story. Always tear up, always. And the perfect music doesn't help.

PAL version ftw. Drastically improved framerate. Not perfect, but certainly not the lol-tastic broken ass shit everyone else dealt with.

The ending to Persona 4.

OBVIOUS SPOILERS:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bIsVisFi2Cg

Its so stereotypically anime, but for some reason it works. It probably helped that I spent a good 80 hours loving the characters.

Its the music that kicks in that gets me.

basically Persona 4 is magical and I don't even like JRPGs that much.

I like P4 more than P3, but the story in P3 moved me more. I still can't listen to the ending theme without feeling kinda sad.

That video almost got me again right now, jerk-ass T_T

This part also got to me the 1st time I played it http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7PfeNntmbB4

The theme for the dungeon is sad too, but really good though. I'd often just set the controller down and let it loop for a while.

I forgot that the ending of Super Mario RPG moved me... Although the story isn't really groundbreaking, the whole experience is quite wonderful.

Man, she made me feel so sad throughout the game, especially during
her S Link when you get her in trouble because you went to Junes after dark
. Was such a well-written character, really tugged at the heartstrings.
