Has Sony ever made a good investment?

They've made several great acquisitions, insomniac, naughty dog, sucker punch, housemarque. They've bought a lot of stinkers too. The worst tho is when they make great acquisitions then badly mismanaged them after, bluepoint being one, they had them make a great game, bought them, then had them immediately switch from why they were good and what they were good at, to working on GAAS, which was then cancelled, so they have zero to show from that purchase, and when a studio with single player heritage switches to a mismanaged Gaas, it's not uncommon for their best talent to just leave.

1. They created the dev software that allowed developers to make PS1 games in C#

2. They created WipEout which sold PlayStation to the 20-something demographic in the 90s

I don't disagree that they have made some bad calls as of late but this is how you run a billion dollar business. You need to keep investing till something sticks.

Google's graveyard of dead projects is a great example.

Argueably one of Sony's major fuckups. When the Psygnosis splash screen turned up, you knew you were about to have a good time.

And it's sad to see that Sony continues to mismanage what's left of them to this day.

Insomniac, Gaikai + Crunchyroll seem to be the good ones imho.

ofc, there's NaughtyDog, Polyphony, Santa Monica, GG, Sucker Punch

Whether you like them or not, none of these studios have released a bad game in a very long time. At least, not from a commercial perspective.

That said, I do think it's a mistake to make Insomniac their Marvel studio; the license fees they have to pay is astronomical. Insomniac would be FAR better off doing new IP + Ratchet every 5-7 years tbh.

Are you forgetting Haven? Jade Raymond's studio? They ended up releasing games that changed the very landscape of single player, story-based gaming. But I'm sure that was just an honest oversight OP.

The problem is a lot of these studios have been mismanaged and sent to the live service mines where they either died, or at deaths door

Plenty of these studios were good investments at the time. Especially Psygnosis. It's just that these investments weren't/aren't handled well by Playstation management. And you could argue that Sony got duped by Bungie's management. The company was and is obviously in a much worse state than they let on.
