New Devil's Third Trailer (Itagaki/WiiU, Japan - Aug 4, retail is Amazon exclusive)

You know how sometimes things can be so bad they're good.

I really hope this nails that aesthetic.

Will watch with interest.

I agree, my only fear is that it's not bad enough to be good.

I hope it's dumb and hokey and outrageous as fuck.

It looks like it is leaning that way but if it takes itself seriously at all, everything can be ruined.

You know what, it isn't much of a looker, but the video had me grinning, it looks like it could be a lot of fun.

As a massive fan of bonkers B games, this looks refreshing. There isn't enough of this stuff on the market. The AAA/Indie-only paradigm with no room in the middle has warped people's perceptions of what video games should be. If I could take less advanced graphics and a smaller budget for games that actually try something new or weird, then I would 99% of the time.

Would rather spend money on this than Mario Party 10, tbqh.

You sound delightful.

It's like after months and months of meetings and brainstorming sessions between Itagaki and his upper level management everyone is completely exasperated, they have no idea how to connect with the western market. A deadline looms near. Out of desperation Itagaki turns to the guy they hired to proofread the English language press releases that normally no one ever talks to and says "hey Lars you're a white guy (what country were you from again?) anyway we really want people in AmeriEurope to buy this game so I want you to describe the absolute coolest character you can think of" and then that actually got included in the final game.

I think gameplay-wise it'll probably be decent to good, because Itagaki, but god damn the graphics and character design are awful. If I owned the Nintendo console would still buy.

No getting around it, its not a CG trailer.
It is what it is and it looks like damn fun.
And that's what I primarily play games for;
to be entertained.

How does the Amazon thing come about?

Like did Amazon pay to have that exclusivity...?
Or did Nintendo pay them to carry it...in exchange for exclusivity

or...dunno

Looks a lot more fun than before.
Graphics are terrible sure, but is that surprising? It's japanese developers using UE3 (not their kind of engine) on WiiU.
If the gameplay is goood, don't seee why I'd care much tbh. Fills a hole since the latest Duke Nukem was shit.

Honestly, it looks more like they don't give a fuck about "connecting to the Western market" and just rolled with what they wanted. You don't have to like the main character, but your'e being a bit weird about it.

I have Outrigger memories watching this trailer. An arcade vibe. But its crazy settings remind me of another shooter, I can't put a name on. Any idea?

Art direction is shit, visuals are last gen, but damn, it actually looks pretty fun.

Game will sell so poorly though that Nintendo's PR will be:

"Hey Chris, Tom, Steve, Jen, Randy, Amber, Pat, Ross, and Yusaf, thanks a lot for buying the game."

animations are way better than last year, so the lighting; the "Vanquish" slide is a good addition, and the transition from third to first person seems better managed now. I'm positevily impressed by the apparent single player contents, always the most important part for me. Hope for a sudden release in the West too.

Honestly, the MC would look a thousand times better if those tattoos were merely larger and less numerous. Is there a story reason for there to be so many?

He looks like a mess.

Visually, it's a little lacking... but after the game's initial reveal, my expectations weren't particularly high. Still not sure what to make of the actual gameplay, but as long as they nail that aspect then I'm sold ;D

The awful art direction drags it down much more than janky animations or crappy textures. But if I find it for cheap, that's the only WiiU game I'll get this year.

Actually this is one of the first games in a long time (along with Fast Racing Neo) that interest me on the Wii U.

Will probably get this...

This game just continues to look terrible. Doesn't seem like Nintendo has much confidence in it either having the retail copy as an Amazon exclusive.

Itagaki, WTF? :(
He used to be a legend to me, i had so much faith in him... but this is looking really terrible, even one year later.
What a mess.

planetaska from reddit made a translation:

First Itagaki was sorry for all this long wait. He is very excited to be able to play this game with us very soon. He is also very thankful for Nintendo to let him finish this game. After many fights and arguing during development, Nintendo and Itagaki had came to an agreement that he had came this far, why not go a bit further and do everything he wanted to do.
The first very important thing he wanted to say from his mouth, is that he is very thankful for all the players waited this long for his game. The heart is the most important thing to Itagaki.
Now to the game. Itagaki didn't just want to make a shooter, that being said, he had to know all the shooter games a shooter fan will be playing, so this game has basically all the elements in a shooter game you can find. That and mix with the melee fighting game he had developed before.
Although this is a game, Itagaki still thinks it's necessary to add some level of reality. In the world of Devil's Third, all satellites were destroyed, and there was EMP from nuclear warheads, had rendered all kinds of electricity based weapon obsolete. So what happens in this kind of situation? The result is that all ultra-ranged (missiles, UAVs) weapons were no longer available. All wars has to be done in close ranged combat by soldiers. It's basically going back to the 1940's war.
The solo play. The main character is a terrorist who was trained in some country by a man who was fled from Japan, who was of course, a Ninja. The man taught the main character everything about Ninjutsu, the modern war, and to form a best group of terrorists. From there the main character (and the group) was finally captured by NATO in a big questionable mission, and was then prisoned in America. Because his terrorist past and expertise, he was then assigned to fight another huge terrorist group, which was considered his 'karma' by Itagaki, and was an unavoidable fight for the main character.
The multiplayer. In this multiplayer mode, very sadly, the terrorist had won and took over America. The multiplayer mode happens after this event. Players were joining the fight as a citizen to take America back, and eventually join together and form clans. But, like everywhere else, groups of soldiers like to fight each other for least reason, and that's where the multiplayer mode happen. From there groups of players will fight each other in close combat like in reality. The player who is the clan leader can also alliance with other clans, so there will be diplomatic aspects in multiplayer. Itagaki thinks an army that only look for a fight are just a group of fools, a real army look for a fight and a victory. It's the basic of military strategy. So there will also be betrayal and espionage. A clan lead has to consider these aspect of diplomacy. Besides clan fighting, a player can also have the choice to register as a mercenary to play multiplayer as in any other shooters.
Players can also build your own fortress for other players to play in it. One aspect of desire in humanity is to create, and to destroy. Imagine the fortress you have spent hours to build was destroyed, burnt down to ashes during the combat. The most interesting part in multiplayer, is of course to read other player's mind, to foresee the tide of combat, so spy works will also happen in multiplayer.
Besides the serious clan combat battle, players can also have entertaining combats in multiplayer, like chasing chickens, or throwing fruits into baskets, to relive the stress. They are really fun to play and Itagaki encourages players to look for it.
Itagaki is really happy to have this opportunity to finally deliver the game to players, as he had been telling us to wait a bit longer, and he knew it's more difficult for players than for himself. He also invites players to pre-order the game on Amazon, so players can join the battle with Valhalla team in the first day.

It looks fine. PS2 posters, get yourselves to SpecSavers

It could be really fun, especially in multiplayer

Thanks for the translation, the story sounds bonkers!

This looked dodgy, but bloody brilliant at the same time last E3.

Looking forward to seeing more of it and probably playing it on Wii U later this year - confirm UK date pls.

Surprised no one has posted the new pics yet.

Wow! I'm loving what I see.

Amazing sorta 80s setting/characters/vibes, nonsense over-the-top action, in a japanese old school gameplay beat'em up + arcade shooter that could be a reimagining of Contra/Mercs...

It's almost everything I ever wanted rolled into one game. I can't believe no one is excited. Online could be tons of fun too (if anyone will play...).

It's also 60fps if I'm not wrong.

It does look a lot better than last E3. The IQ is way better and the framerate is actually stable (60fps probably isn't happening tho). It looks fun... but also jank af. Like someone took Vanquish and Ninja Gaiden 2, smashed them together (awesome!) and then kneecapped the shit out of everything by awkwardly stitching 2-3 independent combat systems/game design philosophies together (oh shit).

The multiplayer sounds really interesting and, above all else... pretty fun! I hope the game manages to sell well enough for there to be a respectable online community.

Ah, right,if anyone can ask him why the game is Amazon exclusive at retail in Japan, it'd be great. I mean, we can guess the reasons (Nintendo not believing enough, retailers not believing at all), but it would be nice to hear from him directly. Still, assuming he can talk about such decisions.

looks extremely generic/bad.

This looks like a project designed by small team for private no name "game development" institutes...

I believe a lot of people are missing the sarcasm/irony in Itagaki's games. It's supposed to look like a 90s action hero flick, how can you take these over the top characters and melon throwing combined with chainsaw swinging seriously.

Devil's Third is a celebration of everything 'wrong' with western pop culture, mixed with a great deal of comic relief and japanese folklore. I love it. It takes balls to deliver a game like this.

I will be there Day 1 as well. I always watch every Itagaki video for some reason. I think it's pretty low people always focus on his face, he's darn wise and has a lot of interesting explanations for how his game development goes.

This is one of the reasons I am still excited to have a Wii U. I'm a little disappointed people are so... disappointed with it. For me, no one does action games quite like Itagaki (so smooth/fluid) and this is exactly the type of overseas game I don't want to see go extinct.

But the graphics aren't FFXV so I guess the game will be terrible, right? Is anyone actually saying with a straight face that it looks like a PS2 game? Seems so off base.
