NAACP Leader Exposed as White Woman in Blackface

It's one thing to genuinely want to improve civil rights, to feel a connection to a different culture. It's quite another when you flat out lie about your own heritage, your father, and try to pass yourself off as someone you're not. She's reduced black women to a caricature. She thinks they either have kinky hair afros like this or braids like this, trying to darken her skin so she appears black. Some of her tweets she's acting like she's been a victim herself, lying about threats. This does nothing for anyone. In fact, that Tyreese tweet she's actually talking down to him and warning him about marrying a white woman, when she herself is a white woman married to a black man.

How can she sit there on a soapbox and talk about what it's like to be black in America when she isn't? Just because you date people of colour or marry them, doesn't give you a free pass to speak for them or their experiences. Be an ally to people of colour, don't co-opt their experiences as your own and pretend you know what you're talking about.

Someone said it's the same as people of colour wanting to be white. No its not. People of colour in white societies have to try and assimilate otherwise they are marginalized forever. If the Sikh doesn't cut his hair or shave his beard, he is considered a terrorist. Many people of colour have to change their names, they have to downplay their religion, their culture. This woman, despite being afforded all the privilege of being a white woman in the US wants to also accept the burdens and challenges of being black in America. But she's not and she won't be. She's made a lucrative career out of this false victimization in a sense. But how is a leader in an organization called 'national association for the advancement of colored people' going to reduce colored people down to stereotypes? She wears 'black' as if it's a costume. 'Time for me to go to work, go get my bronzer'. I wouldn't be surprised if she also didn't co-opt some speech patterns or pretend to speak in ebonics as well.

I'm in the same boat. It is wrong that she lied, but her heart really seemed to be in the right place. She runs a successful family with 4 adopted kids, which is leagues better than the average American household performs. Science or not, if that's how she truly feels inside, there's no reason we shouldn't support her. Yet since the story broke, we've already seen people double down on focusing on her appearance and shaming her for trying. And then people ask why she would hide it?!

Maybe black is her perception of beauty. From an aesthetic standpoint, it doesn't seem any more far-fetched or unreasonable than the injections we see people getting nowadays. Also, going off of the information other users have posted, she has a marvelous track record and has done much more good than harm.

I can't be mad, nor do I think she's crazy.

She can think black is beautiful. She can love black culture and black people. But all that shit went out the window when she concocted a fake identity and lied about her race. What a way to show you love black people.

Preach.

I have to disagree. In both cases, a person is born with one set of genetic programming but feels that this genetic template (Male vs Female, Black vs White) is just wrong for them; they don't feel like they belong in society as how they've been born.

Really no different. That there's not as much a body of studies of this phenomenon is more likely because it's a less common phenomenon than transgender or it's a phenomenon that we typically view as social/cultural (i.e. white kids "acting black" or black people "acting white"). As an analogue to sexuality, adopting a culture that is predominantly associated with one race or another would be more like cross-dressing.

In this case, it really feels like something different; she's not just "cross-dressing". Like this woman truly believes that she should have been born black or that she identifies as black. So it's much more analogous to transgender than simply cross-dressing.

I'd file this theory with your electromagnetic mind-reading one.

I'm gonna go ahead and agree with this. as strange as this whole thing is, i hope she doesn't catch any grief if she is being genuine.

Those are her adopted siblings, not her kids

also, her appearance is the least troubling aspect of this story. She clearly has issues. Read the whole article

She faked death threats and other hate crimes. She is strait up lying about being a victimized Black woman. She is not being genuine.

Quantify feeling black

Quantify feeling male, female, gay, straight, trans, bi.

Seems to me, it's no different than being born with the genetic programming for X (and all of the social norms for X be that masculinity, femininity, heterosexuality) but feeling like you should have been born with the genetic programming for Y.

I think there's a point to be made about her deceiving people, but she hasn't harmed anyone or committed a crime. It wasn't done out of hatred or ridicule, clearly.

Are you honestly being serious now? This is GAF so I don't know sometimes and I'm off base. You can't 'feel black', you either are or you aren't. You can't feel gay, you either are or you aren't. This woman is not black, and she never will be.

this can very very easily be argued considering what lengths this woman has gone to. I'm not gonna say it's factual, but I'm not gonna pretend that she is doing this to minimize what it means to be black.

Quoting this because it's real talk.

Hey now.

In America, white people can be anything we want to be if we set our mind to it. We can even be black people.

It's the American Dream, friend.

The crime reports mentioned don't sound completely substantiated, but I don't think they're baseless enough to question whether or not she's sincerely trans, too, especially with the family mess thrown in.

I see where this is going and honestly I don't feel like going down that road. But I will say this, the fact I see more and more stories of people that look like me being assaulted, abused, and worse, hurts. It hurts so bad, if she truly felt a kinship with me she would not have trivialized my people into a costume.

The fact she lied to the fucking NAACP about her race is the biggest red flag there is, she MIGHT have done good things, but she did them for the wrong reasons. And that taints her.

I don't think she means to do that either, but I am saying this should not be supported.
