NAACP Leader Exposed as White Woman in Blackface

Just ran across this:

To be fair she does say "the" not "my".

Still can't deal with this.

Black people wouldn't say "my".

It's The Natural Movement.

This whole situation is weird as hell but there sre some interesting questions that come up. What does it mean to be black? What does it mean to be white? I can't think of a convincing answer that would satisfy all cases. I think race is much more nebulous of a concept than most think. There are no real hard and fast dividing lines.

Where do I even start...

I feel sad for this woman because she obviously wants to do good things and either relates more to another ethnic background or is ashamed of hers. But nevermind that. Sure it's inappropriate that she lied on declarations or whatever, yet this makes me think of a larger issue in society in general.

Here we have a white woman who adopted 4 black kids, fights for black civil rights, and wants so bad to portray herself as a black person she even lies about it and alters her appearance and background to fit in. When exposed, most of the backlash is "wow she's crazy", "whoa what", "is this the onion", etc. Yet there are tons of minorities in the world who actively try to make themselves more white, and most people wouldn't bat an eyelid.
This is completely different. This is a woman who is straight-out denying her own heritage and appropriating another, whether that be maliciously or not, it's not her place to claim to do so and while there's loads of grey areas in certain issues like sexuality, race is usually a lot more, for lack of a better term, black and white.

Just because she has done all these great things doesn't mean she can somehow try and fleece everyone into believing she is magically afro-descendent, and she can claim it all she wants, but she will never be able to change her ethnicity, and people will be able to read her all through her life never mind how hard she tries. So yes, she is crazy and this story is ridiculous. When flat-out asked about her ethnicity, given her background of work, she said nothing, and flat-out avoided it. What's the big problem?

And when we see the reverse situation in non-western cultures it can be due to other standards set by Western cultures or even internally, but they're still not claiming to be an entire race altogether, or "mixed".

It's "understandable", especially in entertainment circles, and the Asian trend of lightening your skin to appeal more "internationally" is generally accepted. People changing their names to be more "normal" (White American) and to draw less attention is also something which people don't consider to be deceitful or crazy.
She isn't in the entertainment business. She's what, a teacher and civil rights activist? She's someone people need to look up to and learn from but even at face value she's lying to the world and herself really, and it discredits her from the get-go.

When you see Asian celebrities etc. clamoring for lighter skin tones on their idols, as I said that can be accredited more to their own cultures and beauty standards, with some western influence but it's not something we know much about in the west. Asia has a whole load of issues but this is about an American woman claiming to be something she is not altogether. I'd imagine when you see k-pop stars include English words or Romanticise their names it's more for commercial reasons, they still make it clear this is an Asian product, with Asian people, they're not lying.

Isn't all that kinda sad? Many societies view being white as some sort of ideal or norm, and the attitudes towards the concept of race is skewed that way. If non-whites want to try to be more white, that's kinda okay, but if whites want to be other races, damn there's something wrong there. Right?
You can thank western power and influence for that first part. You need to define being more white or more "other" races though. There's often an easy to tell difference behind paying homage or taking influence from a culture, to straight out appropriating it, or claiming it for your own, or bastardising it for your own selfish reasons.

Here's a thought: If we start to accept white people wanting to become black, maybe cops who are so trigger happy when dealing with unarmed black people will think twice. If they don't know if the black people they see are really black or whether they could be the son or daughter or cousin or whatever of someone they might know who's just -pretending- to be black? Okay, that's a ridiculous thought, but that's how ridiculous I think society is today with regards to racial matters. :(
I just...uh...yikes.

Here's a thought. How about when the police start being rational human beings properly doing their job and treating everyone equally without prejudice, then we might be off to a start.

So um how are black people taking this?

I mean us latinos have to put up with fake hispanics all the time like that jerk Ted Cruz and Marco Rubio faking to win our votes but damn.

Wouldn't surprise me tbh, considering the extent she's willing to pull off so far from what we've seen.........

This is just too bad. It seems like she's doing genuine good work for the community of black people, and then this. Many folks in the NAACP must have felt like they're such a fool.

I think the naacp leadership knew... At least the president she replaced said so in the article

I am up to about seven weebay.gifs and twelve deadpinocchio.gifs in this thread alone.

We're mostly just making fun of her right now. The more serious conversations will probably come in a day or two.

I honestly think everyone should just drop this and let her have this one.

She's probably done more actual good than 99% of the fake tumblr liberals who are going to be writing 4000 word think pieces about what a horrific crime this was.

I'm in the same boat. It is wrong that she lied, but her heart really seemed to be in the right place. She runs a successful family with 4 adopted kids, which is leagues better than the average American household performs. Science or not, if that's how she truly feels inside, there's no reason we shouldn't support her. Yet since the story broke, we've already seen people double down on focusing on her appearance and shaming her for trying. And then people ask why she would hide it?!

Maybe black is her perception of beauty. From an aesthetic standpoint, it doesn't seem any more far-fetched or unreasonable than the injections we see people getting nowadays. Also, going off of the information other users have posted, she has a marvelous track record and has done much more good than harm.

I can't be mad, nor do I think she's crazy.

This isn't the way to show her passion about the black population. Being completely dishonest about her race and heritage is a betrayal on the people she's supposed to represent. And let's not kid ourselves, she did this because she thought she wouldn't get as far as she did in the NAACP if she "stayed" white.

"Look! I'm black just like you! I'm one of you! Nose earring, thick curly hair!" is extremely patronizing and offensive to the black community. And I'm sorry but there's no chance that she's anything but crazy. There's plenty of people who are passionate about a population or region without pretending they're from there.

Let's say I'm super passionate about veteran's affairs, supporting the troops, all that jazz. Then somewhere along the way I start to pretend to walk with a hobble, act like I have PTSD, and lied that I was deployed and got injured, and received a purple heart. The people who actually DID get deployed and suffered injuries would be absolutely livid, because there's no way I would do that if I didn't think it would get me places in my humanitarian career.

Let her have what one? no this needs to be made fun of period.

I was about to post another big comment but there's no point. It's funny how 'race is only a social construct' is thrown out when it needs to suit your narrative. Why can't she be black, what does it mean to be black, black is just a feeling. And yet, that social construct is thrown in the face of black people everyday in America. In this thread, you have people of color, especially black people say what this woman has done is damaging to actual ADVANCEMENT of civil rights and combating social issues affecting visible minorities, but those are almost handwaved away with, hey, she married a black guy, she has black kids/black siblings, her heart was in the right place. Let her do what she wants. It seems there literally is nothing you can tell them they can't do.

Another day, and another reason why Black people are seen as shit in America.
