NAACP Leader Exposed as White Woman in Blackface

Can we stop fucking comparing this situation to transgender issues and Caitlyn Jenner, please?

Its really helping to see who is ignorant about the identity of minorities AND transgenders at the same time, same with the "But black woman try to look white" argument.

If she's doing lectures and stuff on African Studies, it could be that she's coming to it from an academic perspective. Maybe she's doing academic research. Could make for an interesting sociology paper or book.

Lord... have mercy.

Go on, please... You've obviously got something to say.

It's the level of dishonesty on display.

I don't quite get why this question's come up so many times in the thread, but if we're going to use the Caitlyn Jenner example. Everyone knew about Caitlyn before. Everyone had seen Caitlyn before. Caitlyn never made an attempt to hide what she was, and Caitlyn was very open about what was going on, and why she was doing it.

This woman lied about her heritage, lied about who her parents were, and used those lies to gain some semblance of political power while representing a race that wasn't hers. She knew she wasn't black, and still manipulated her way into a position of authority within that community.

So the big difference is dishonesty. There is nothing about what she was trying to do that necessitated her dishonesty. She didn't have to pretend to be black to enjoy the things she enjoys. So not only was it unnecessary, it was dishonest. It was fraudulent.

Thanks. I get the dishonesty part. Maybe I'm naive, but it doesn't necessarily seem like she was up to some sort of nefarious nonsense. Let's say she heavily, honestly, identifies herself as "black"... Is that cool? Will that ever be cool? If not, why not? Given the fact that this is obviously taboo, how the heck could she be expected to be honest and upfront about this. "Hi! I know I look white, but I actually identify as black" isn't something you'd say if you'd want to be taken seriously by anyone, as evidenced by the reaction in this thread.

I guess my main hang-up on this is "why not"? She obviously couldn't be honest about this and ever be taken seriously so, if we give her the slightest benefit of the doubt that she truly identifies as something she wasn't necessarily born as, then why is this a problem? Why is this a joke?

fuck it do it marvel.. billion.

If a transsexual woman were the head of some popular woman's organization, said she was a woman, etc., would we say that she wasn't a woman upon learning of her transsexuality?

There's a difference between getting medical/professional help to help live honestly the way your brain was wired from birth, and purposefully choosing to adopt and embrace (and in this case, exploit) societal constructs for personal gain.

Wow. This is honest to god one of the weirdest things I have read. As a black person I don't even know how to even feel about this. Like, I'm genuinely having a hard time processing this shit right now.

All I know for sure is that there is fuckery a foot... and that her hair game is on point.

I feel sad for this woman because she obviously wants to do good things and either relates more to another ethnic background or is ashamed of hers. But nevermind that. Sure it's inappropriate that she lied on declarations or whatever, yet this makes me think of a larger issue in society in general.

Here we have a white woman who adopted 4 black kids, fights for black civil rights, and wants so bad to portray herself as a black person she even lies about it and alters her appearance and background to fit in. When exposed, most of the backlash is "wow she's crazy", "whoa what", "is this the onion", etc. Yet there are tons of minorities in the world who actively try to make themselves more white, and most people wouldn't bat an eyelid. It's "understandable", especially in entertainment circles, and the Asian trend of lightening your skin to appeal more "internationally" is generally accepted. People changing their names to be more "normal" (White American) and to draw less attention is also something which people don't consider to be deceitful or crazy.

Isn't all that kinda sad? Many societies view being white as some sort of ideal or norm, and the attitudes towards the concept of race is skewed that way. If non-whites want to try to be more white, that's kinda okay, but if whites want to be other races, damn there's something wrong there. Right?

Here's a thought: If we start to accept white people wanting to become black, maybe cops who are so trigger happy when dealing with unarmed black people will think twice. If they don't know if the black people they see are really black or whether they could be the son or daughter or cousin or whatever of someone they might know who's just -pretending- to be black? Okay, that's a ridiculous thought, but that's how ridiculous I think society is today with regards to racial matters. :(
90% of this post makes no sense, especially the last sentence. You can't just flip a switch and decide to take on another ethnic group's identity/culture. You're post almost implies that we need White people to "be" different ethnicities as to restore some sort of made up balance. That's not how it's done, what we need is damn social/judicial equality, not White people pretending they're in the movie Soul Man.

hey guys, why does it matter that someone lied about having passed the bar when they won cases and did right by their clients? they're a good lawyer!!!

You might be joking, but these aren't remotely similar. It would only sorta kinda match up if the NAACP had a requirement of being black for their leaders.

That's exactly what I would jump to first, but I have no idea. It's technically possible? Doubt this woman has whatever that condition is, though.

This is a video game forum, I'm sure there's plenty of dudes who identify as Asian. Japanese, if we want to get specific.

Wow @ that Duckroll post.

Go on, please... You've obviously got something to say.

Caitlyn Jenner became a woman because his life was Bruce Jenner was a lie to herself, this woman became a lie for some kind of weird gain, all this while taking some really stereotypical traits along the way to make this lie more realistic from the outside. If she really is who she is she would have not hesitated when asked her race, if she really believe it she wouldnt need to pretend that her natural hair is curly.

Its like people are getting the superficial aspects of all the commentary of gender and misrepresenting them on purpose.

Yup. Like I said, doubt that woman has any such condition.

All the same, didn't agree with the dishonesty argument. This is the main thing, I feel.

Think about all the speaking engagements and press and such she got over the years that could have gone to actual black women.

At first I didn't get this one. But now I do...

I honestly think everyone should just drop this and let her have this one.

She's probably done more actual good than 99% of the fake tumblr liberals who are going to be writing 4000 word think pieces about what a horrific crime this was.

Agreed. Not to mention the GAF equivalent who are about 1000 words in on their write-up. They'll be posting them tomorrow.

Why do you care about her reasons if she's doing good? I don't think people have really described how this might damage civil rights advancement. Is it because she's promoting stereotypes?

I might not have worded it clearly. The whole thing is so fuckin weird that my old head was having a problem trying to clearly explain how this shit is just wrong.

Nah, it's cool. I couldn't remember how to respond to the "how is this different from transgender" argument, myself. So I let things take their course lol

Again, the motives come into play... "Some kind of weird gain"? What does that mean? Do we think she was a young white adult woman trying to find her path in life when, all of the sudden, she thought "if I start acting 'black', I can get a high ranking position in an organization that fights for black rights! Genius! What a brilliant plan!"

Yeah, she was dishonest. Of course she was dishonest. Regardless of motive, she'd be crucified either way.

I see where duckroll is trying to come from (Asian culture and their obsession with white culture & looking white), but he missed the point with Rachel because she lied about her heritage to get into a position of power as opposed to simply co-opting it for some kind of reason relating to... prestige? I can't really think of the correct word.

This fucking thread, it's pretty insane.

The whole thing is bizarre, and actually pretty sad. Not quite sure how to feel on it yet.

To add to my last post... I don't think that most people know that being transgendered isn't something you just decide on one day. Identification is more than speaking something into existence. Gender and sex are such complicated subjects that there are many legitimate forms of identification.

Race is also complex, but the issues are mainly from the social context as opposed to the biological.

If "transethnicity" were a thing, however... well, that would make things very interesting.

Well. Huh.

The lying is the problem. That doesn't work. But if she's mentally sound and didn't cause any actual harm. More power to her. People can look and act how ever they feel and all that. Unless she was using her kids as props, or strictly about the (wat) gain, can't really see crucifying her.

Those pics are something.

I feel like in years to come we'll still be debating what the pinnacle of this whole story was, like we do with the famous Konami press conference.

Personally, it was when I was watching her husband's rap video transition from her face to the plate of discarded salmon, to her as batman... that was when I got up, went to the kitchen, and checked that those were just anti-inflams I just took.

Never seen anything like it. Ever.

But what good is she doing again? She is not some brave Caitlyn Jenner bringing awareness for transblack people all over America. She could have done all the good she did while being white, by showing that not belonging to a race does not take away your ability to empathize it to the point you fight for their rights, by showing that kindness transcends race. Instead this just seems incredibly narcissistic, twisted and even helping to spread racial segregation:

I mean, what is this shit? If her goal were equality she wouldnt be saying this. This is incredibly divisive and whatever good she has done is irretrievably lost, not because of the internet mob or tumblr people that write 1000-word blog posts like that salty dude in the last page said because he was too afraid to name-drop mumei, all the potential good she made came from a place of dishonesty, a dubious self-serving source, there is nothing salvageable from that wreck.
Having people come and tell those minorities that they should be thankful for this is just patronizing.

Im not talking about the job, no one cant state that she got that job because she is fake black, im talking about the personal please she is getting from this, its like a weird variant of slumming,
