Damn, it's the green nipples zero instead of the cool zero

Since the classic ending got leaked, wouldn't that mean that Roy and ryu will also be available when the update and Lucas is up?

That reminds me. Sakurai should have skipped Roy and devoted his development resources to creating a proper sword wielding Twilight Princess based Ganondorf. The fact that he's still a Captain Falcon clone is utter nonsense. The character deserves better.

The time it takes to develop an already pre-existing character is a lot LOT lower than creating a new character from scratch. Please stop thinking that every character takes the same amount of time and resources, because that is not the case.

I don't think popularity is necessarily a good reason to include a character in Smash 4 given the many alternatives. Ryu is a safe and easy choice, guaranteed to be a hit with a lot of gamers. I wish Sakurai would be a little more daring and inventive. Considering all of Smash 4's clones, and characters from big Nintendo franchises, and gaming icons like Pac-Man, its roster would benefit from more offbeat and fresh characters like Wonder Red.

Sakurai has always been daring and inventive even in Smash 4

Jigglypuff, Ice Climbers, ROB, Duck Hunt Duo, Wii Fit Trainer or the Villager, that's not the kind of character that someone would actually wanted.

Now watch an HD port of Street Fighter Alpha 3 be released on everything but Nintendo consoles.

I can actually see this happening soon.

The character does look really great in the Wii U style.

Ryu is such a weird addition. Weirder than Snake in Brawl perhaps.
Ehh, I don't think so. Snake was pretty out of left field.

We literally just got Duck Hunt, and the Chorus Kids may still be on the way since we got Rhythm Heaven music. They're not gonna add some rando character just because you want him haha. "Where's Geno Nintendo? Rosalina over him? It's not like she's the most siginficant new Mario character since Super Mario Bros.!"

I was pretty worried about how Ryu would end up looking, but he actually fits in really well. I'm interested in seeing what his full moveset looks like.

Have we talked about how Sakurai is a big Street Fighter fan? And that he won a 100-person Street Fighter II tournament?
I find it hard to believe that Sakurai was familiar with Street Fighter. Obviously Smash 64 was created without any SF influence, and Mario's original moveset definitely does not pay homage to Ryu at all.

Kotaku: Do you ever talk to the high-level competitive players when you're balancing Smash Bros.?

Sakurai: Mostly I don't incorporate feedback like that. Basically, Smash Bros. is designed to be sort of targeted at the center, intermediate players, and if you think of sort of a skill graph or something where if you're targeting just the peak of that performance level, you're targeting a very small group of people. We wanna avoid a situation where it becomes a game sort of like other competitive fighting games, where it's only apreciated by a very small, passionate group of sort of maniac players. We definitely don't want that sort of situation. It's supposed to be a fun game for a wide variety of people.

But that's not to say that I don't appreciate very high-level competitive play, the type of very refined competitive gameplay that happens in other fighting games. Personally, I have a lot of experience playing in the arcade scene, and personally came out as a champion of a 100-person battle in arcade Street Fighter II.

Kotaku: Recently?

Sakurai: A long, long time ago. So I don't wanna ignore that there's that type of pleasure to be had from the game.

There'll probably be one more round of DLC with Wolf+A ballot character. I wouldn't lose hope yet.

Nah, I've already submitted. It's better this way. At least I can take solace that Wolf had a decent run and has a nice trophy butt

;_;

What's with your strange insistence that Ryu took Wonder Red's spot? They have nothing to do with each other. Ryu is playable for his own reasons, and Wonder Red is not playable for different reasons.

It was one fucking day. I can't believe how desperate people are for that 15 minutes of fame. 15 seconds really.

But the lack of surprise has killed it somewhat.

The awesomeness of the Mega Man one was because it was a shock...same with many of the others.

I didn't even get the Mega Man one. Nintendo's presentation was on too early, the stream on their site was janky as hell, and I needed to get to my job, so I planned on watching it there. First thing I see on youtube is Maximilian posting "Mega Man revealed for Smash" and "Reaction to Mega Man reveal". I wish I could've had a reaction to the reveal.

RYU HYPE!

I'm excited! Ryu's so iconic, so he definitely feels at home with gaming' most iconic mascots.

I want the Inkling's in Smash so bad, I hope that's not *just* a trophy.

The whole "legendary character" argument people are tossing around here only applies to third party characters. Sakurai only picks big gaming icons when it comes to third party, so Ryu certainly fits in (There's a lot more to it than just popularity but I don't want to repeat a hundred arguments.) It's also why a character like Bayonetta seems unlikely.

Wonder Red doesn't have this problem though because he is first party. I can see him being in the next Smash or maybe getting enough votes in the Ballot.

Always thought it was weird seeing Mega Man with Ryu's shoryuken move, but now it all makes sense !
Colour me pleasantly surprise.

I mean, this is super cool haha. It's been a half hour of fame for me alone, and they keep pumping out stuff.

Ryu in Smash goes beyond repping Street Fighter games in Nintendo consoles. Smash at its core originates from SF2, both as a homage and as a deviation, and the original 12 Smash characters are based off from SF2.

For example, in Smash 64, Mario had a fireball (hadoken), and uppercut (shoryuken) and a tornado (tatsumaki). Luigi is a Mario clone, just like Ken was from Ryu, with a stronger "shoryuken". Donkey Kong was a grapple-heavy character like Zangief. Pikachu is Blanka. Fox was Chun-Li. Falcon was Sagat. Also, Sakurai was an avid Street Fighter 2 player and he even won a tournament once.

Ryu in Smash is a way to pay tribute to the series that made Smash possible in first place and to finally marry together the "traditional fighting" and "Smash" arguments (like the Sonic vs Mario arguments). People looking exclusively at franchise representation and numbers are being shortsighted and not getting it.

Oh wow. A third-party character, entirely new to the series, offered as DLC. I skipped on Mewtwo and will skip on Roy, but will most likely buy Ryu day 1 just to see how he plays.

And yeah I'll get Lucas too because he was my main in Brawl.

Good shit Nintendo.

ahhh, Sakurai. The man that while he does surprising things you didnt know you even wanted, never gets right the simpler more straight forward things to do.
No Ken or Dan outfit is a little stupid, to say the least. Its not even like is something important, but is that simple to think thats something people would love to see, and so easy to implement, that is a little baffling to omitt their inclusion.
Not even that surprising anymore coming from him...

So like...as in, Roy and Ryu's entire character data is included in the patch? That's something.

Yeah, they're finished.

His colors are his ones from ST.
It's fan-service.
