These threads aren't here just so you can circle jerk over how happy you are about a character being in a game. Anyone who thinks the announcement is boring has just as much right to come in here and complain as you have to come in here and get excited.

I myself, am not very excited about either of them. A fifth Fire Emblem character, and not even one that was that original in the first place, and a character from another fighting game series. The fact that a bunch of Nintendo characters are getting passed up just to bring over another fighting game character isn't that interesting to me, and you've got no business going around telling people what their reaction should be to the news.
 
Hmm...Sony secures MGS4 as a PS3 exclusive; Nintendo announces Solid Snake as a playable character in Smash Brawl a year later. Now, Sony announces SFV console exclusive to PS4 and Ryu shows up in Smash U months later. Anyone else noticing a pattern?

I'm surprised Roy is coming back, but as a fan of clone characters that's cool. I sort of wish they got a bit more creative with the choice of Fire Emblem reps, there are so many classes in those games, but all we got are Lords and a tactician.

Ryu is a really cool addition. I hope his stage is fun.

It's complicated, but also not. Roy's popularity in Smash Bros has little to do with Fire Emblem as a series.

When Melee came out, a lot of younger Nintendo fans had no idea who Marth and Roy were. Melee was their first introduction to the characters. And these characters came with no supplemental trophies or stages. So what people saw of Marth and Roy is exactly what they got.

Marth and Roy were cool because they seemed so "serious" compared to the other Melee fighters. The rest of the cast were cartoon characters, but Marth and Roy seemed much more mysterious and mature.

Nobody knew where they were from (beyond the title of their series), nobody could even understand what they were saying (if they didn't speak Japanese), so what we have are two cool, mysterious characters that felt drastically different from the rest of the cast. Fire Emblem, through exposure, has been largely normalized in Smash Bros. But back then, they stuck out like sore thumbs.

So you have these two cool characters you know nothing about and have no attachment to beyond Melee. You have Marth, who is cool and fast. But then you have Roy, who has a sweet chestplate, red hair, and explodes fire out of his sword. Where Marth was elegant and agile, Roy felt rough and tough. He captured a lot of boyish attitude that appealed to young male players.

Without any other context, Roy was easily one of the coolest characters in the game. There's a reason why he was such a popular "noob" character. He was so new and interesting and had a complex design and EXPLODED INTO FLAMES.

Roy was our boy.

The demo from last e3 purportedly had a wolfen in it, and a "VS WOLF" mode. At least according to the starfox wiki. I didn't pay any attention to it last year, so it might be complete lies.

He has been in both of the starfox games (that aren't adventures...) after his character was invented though, so it's a safe bet he will be in star fox u too.

I've never seen such 50/50 hate for something that leaked earlier and was expected. Did that many of you miss that or are you just reiterating hate?

Looking forward to hearing about 2 more characters coming soon too I'm sure and the season pass. Expect a bundle, they had an area on the site for bundles and it didn't include anything the last time.

Didn't know that, I thought we only saw 64-esque all range mode and Falco.

Well, Smash Bros. is a perfect way to promote classic, forgotten characters. Hopefully the news for E3 that hasn't been leaked yet is that Lucas and Roy are promoting the release of Mother 3 and Fire Emblem Sword of Seals on the eshop. :D

I don't have a problem with clones. I don't even enjoy Roy in his own game though.
 
What's sad is that if the rumors are true, Ryu and Roy were probably going to be Nintendo's "Available NOW" reveal. If this leak and the 1.0.7 audio file leak didn't occur, just imagine how we all would've reacted.

Sakurai still has future announcements to use as his cards, and the vids for the characters. It would have been a great reveal, though, but Bamco fucked up.

Explain to me the relevance of listing the number of DKC reps in expressing disappointment

There's a Ken trophy, meaning a model for him was made, which means there's no excuse.

Isn't Ken's trophy just a rip from SFIV or something? It doesn't seem to match the style of Ryu's.
 
Listening to the songs found in the patch, I'm so happy Blue Birds and Monkey Watch from Rhythm Heaven are in! I'm really hoping we get more RH songs, or even better, a RH stage so we could get some more rhythmy goodness.

Because I'd prefer a Donkey Kong character or an original character over Roy?

Or hell, what about Wolf? He actually had an interesting moveset.

Roy's a boring character from a game series with a ton of characters without much to set him apart from those other characters.
 
This reminds me, when looking at the dreamland 64 tracks I figured most out from the song names but I think there was a triple deluxe one that had me bamboozled, someone end my confusion with English naming conventions please.

Lol right? The blind hate for ryu kills me. He's iconic and I think he deserves to be in. How can people not be hype?
