Xbox One adds Xbox 360 backwards compatibility

This isn't "native" BC for disc owners since you have to download the digital version from MS servers. As far as I can tell any game without a digital version won't be playable. That leaves out a decent chunk of my collection.

Guess my 360 will stay hooked up then, nice try MS.

EDIT: Also what are they going to do about DLC?

This. If it were to be like PS2, Wii, & Wii-U where it can absolutely play all PS1, Gamecube, & Wii games natively using the discs without anything else, then I would be excited.

This doesn't cut the mustard one bit.

So BC means MS wins E3, ok then........

Good move for people who move up from a 360, but I wouldn't call it a game changer personally.

E3 won and it has barely started.

This. If it were to be like PS2 where it can absolutely play all PS1 games using a disc without anything else, then I would be excited.

What you're suggesting is not technically possible. PS2/Wii/Wii U had the predecessor's hardware inside them to make this work. The Xbox One (and PS4) doesn't, for cost / architectural reasons.

Backwards compatibility is a big deal to me. Nice to know that revisiting my large 360 library may no longer be dependent on my aging 360 (depending on what is supported). Still using my PS2 for PS1 games, DS on 3DS, and have used the Xbox BC on 360 for several titles.

To be fair, this is pretty unexpected. We are 2 years into the console cycle, who would have thought they would bother with this, especially with the amount of remastered games that are popping up.

Best news of the day so far for me though.

That's insane. Didn't think this was possible.

Might make me actually buy an Xbone for X1/360 exclusives some time in the future if it works well, since I didn't have a 360 either. I'll first wait and see how it turns out though.

Will the BC be laggy or have general issues like Xbox did on 360? Can I play my Japan-only games on my US Xbox One? Can I use 360 arcade sticks? Will Cave and other slightly dusty companies sign up?

These are my burning questions. I really hope the answer to all of these is "yes". Certainly not selling my 360 yet, lol.

Could it be possible for the PS4 to play the entire Playstation library (like from PS1 to PS3?)

That would be a hell of an answer.
Not going to happen though.

BC is more of a bullet point to sell consoles than an actual useful feature for most people. I thought it was *really* important way back when I bought my BC PS3 but ended up playing about 90 - 95 percent PS3 stuff on it over the life of that console. And that was full hardware BC, not this software emulated , download only stuff.

In actual day to day use I think this won't make a large difference for most of the folks who are interested in buying an Xbox One.

Well... Rock Band 4 is beginning to look less like a purchase for me...

(If I can play Rock Band 3 on my Xbox One.)

While a cool announcement, not for me. I only kept console exclusive games for my 360 cause damn near everything else on the system besides halo, forza and gears are on other consoles or PC.

Personally it seems to me people like the idea of BC far more than they like the reality of it. I used BC on my original fat PS3 like twice, even though I thought it was something I really wanted before I had it.

I think it might be too late to truly see if it matters or not. Unless you think Xbox One sales will double as a result of this or something.

What if the game doesn't have a digital version? He said if you put in a retail disc you have to download it? Or did he mean install?

They'll add the titles digitally and the disc will just let you download it for free, from what I can tell. Pretty crappy for collectors, but we have the old systems anyway so w/e.

Sony needs to announce BC now, seriously.
Bravo MS, Bravo.

How is this even possible? So many people said this was beyond a pipedream.

Well, the question is obviously the CPUs. The XB1 GPU is vastly more powerful than the 360's GPU.

As for the CPU:

360 uses a 3-core Xenon CPU running at 3.2ghz each.

XB1 uses a 8-core Jaguar CPU running at 1.75ghz each.

Since the XB1 has 8GB of RAM, compared to the 360's 512MB of RAM, I would imagine all you have to do is re-thread CPU calls on-the-fly. Even if the 360's CPU is faster, the Jaguar can process the same amount of data at the same time due to it having 5 more cores to work with.

Not to mention, since we're talking about DDR3 Ram, the GPU itself could take over some small-address CPU jobs on the XB1.

I'm no expert, mind you, but that's how I would imagine it will work. Someone smarter than me can probably give you a better idea. :)

Sounds really similar to how the 360 emulated OG games. I'm happy because I sold my 360 along time ago but I still own a good sized digital collection. Wish I didn't opt out of the preview program, waiting to re-enroll now.

This is huge, but there's a lot to work out.

Will things like Rock Band work? And if so will they work with XBO instruments? What about transferring existing saves?

This is huge!
This actually might be a game changer. If you just have to insert a disc and download something and you're all set, it better than PS Now imo
