Xbox One adds Xbox 360 backwards compatibility

Holy shit. Will be buying a One sooner rather than later now. Really hope that Sony implements bc on the PS4 if it's possible. Would love to get rid of my PS3.

Question, so if I want to buy a 360 game and play it on the XBOX ONE, wouldnt graphics wise it be a problem because 360 games have less resolution or would the x1 fix that?

Because developers need to give permission that's why it will take time

But even disk based games will work. So definitely not streaming.

none of this disproves that it could be streaming. the console knows which game is on a disk. it could be simply looking up whether that game is on their streaming service and then giving you access to that game. don't get me wrong that capability is still very very cool cool. i applaud ms for not charging people extra (unlike sony with psnow) I just don't think this is what people think it is (playing games locally on the system)

LOL no... it is limited titles, and this is hardly any kind of megaton, 360 also had this.

Downplay it all you want, but XBLA is brimming with awesome content. Can't see any publishers not giving the ok, unless it's a situation where they no longer have a license.

This thread is hilarious. Backward compatibility for a subset of Xbox 360 games (not a native HW solution to cover all games) on a 2 year old console is a "Game Changer"? Really? I mean really! So suddenly being able to play your old games that you've already been playing for 10 years is going to change the tide in the console war. LOL. I really can't believe what I'm hearing.

Sure, BC is nice and it makes upgrading for those who HAVEN'T yet a bit easier to swallow. But this isn't 2013 guys. If this was announced prior to XB1 launch, that would have been a game changer. But in 2015 with the sales deficit XB1 is in, you guys are saying the killer app to make people upgrade is not a cool new feature or new exclusive software, but BC with old Xbox 360 games?! Hilarious.

With all the HD remasters going around and the trickle of releases that X360 gets currently, BC is even less important. But since when has BC been a game changer? PS3 launched with the ability to play ANY playstation game from PS1 and PS2 day 1 and did that do anything to allow it to dent into X360 marketshare? It was so valuable in fact that Sony removed it within a year and nobody even blinked. Microsoft tried SW emulation before too with X360 and how many people bought a 360 to play Halo on Xbox? Yeah...game changer

I don't get it. People were angry at the lack of BC. Now it's here, and it's something bad?

There's a lot of games I still haven't started yet from the 360 sales. This will definitely come in handy as I just feel the need of completing those games while playing XBO titles.

This is awesome! My 360 is still hooked up and used all the time.

To think I can't even play my PSN bought PS1 games on my PS4....come on Sony, I really ain't interested in PSNow.

Post e3 2013: Microsoft, just when I think you couldn't possibly be any DUMBER, you go and do something like this..................................................

People overhyping this like crazy. Honestly, how many people that own an XB1 are going to put in a 360 disc? And of those people, how many will do it more than a handful of times past the novelty stage? Yes, having the option available is better than not, but it's not a game changer. The average consumer isn't going to care and won't even know the feature exists.

People on forums like this seem to think they live in some bubble where everyone is in the know. I hate to break it to you, but the majority of people that buy game consoles have no idea what's going on. They don't visit game forums daily. They don't watch E3 conferences. They don't pick and scratch for every little detail they can find.

BC is nice to have but it's not going to tip the scales.

And before you all give me anecdotes of how you used PS3 BC and X360 BC a million times each, that's meaningless in the grand scheme of things. It's good for you but it's not a "megaton." You're not the majority. You're the minority. An extremely small minority at that.

"We're giving you backwards compatibility!"
(As long as you put in a retail disc and download a copy of the game from our limited selection of 360 games and not do anything with the disc it's self)

I'm sorry but that's not backwards compatibility, I mean hopefully this encourages Sony to do something similar but come on now.

It's not even native, hardware BC like with PS2, Wii, & Wii U. Otherwise, there would be no need for software emulation involved.

Does this mean that 360 controllers will be BC too? THAT would be a game changer. Fuck having to buy basically 3 more controllers for 4-player MP even if I own enough perfectly fine 360 controllers.

BC does matter, and with a growing digital market is matters more than ever. I used to hear it often among parents looking to buy a game for their kids; Does it play his/her old games?

This is a game changer.

We will see but i don't see it changing much even more so since it's not as simple as putting in the games and they work .

I really want to know how the fuck they're pulling this off.

Since it's on a game by game basis, looks like they're patching the games (which is why it needs publisher support).

As for this, the only reason I still have my 360 is for elder scrolls and the Witcher 2, so if/when I get a One, it'll be nice to be able to carry those over.

Here's what I think we know so far:

-100 titles available at launch

-When you put your 360 disc in, it downloads the full game to your XB1 hard drive from Xbox Live in the form of an XB1 compatible digital game

-Developers have to opt in for their games to be available (i.e. you might not see a developer opt in if they are planning to release a XB1 remaster of a 360 game)

-Available today for Preview members, holiday 2015 for everyone else

-Can play MP with players on 360 and use XB1 features like Twitch streaming and screenshot uploads

Know what those parents are doing now? Handing their kids a tablet

I just hope all my games are confirmed to work. The thought of only having to hook up one console is amazing enough.

AMAZING!!! And guys please stop with the salt. You damn well know that many parents and cheapwads are going to love the fact that they can upgrade and still keep themselves entertained with old titles.

you miss the point of the cheapwads. they are cheap, and practical. No one (cheapskate) is going to spend $300-350 on an XBONE when they can spend like $100 on a 360 on craigslist, with like 10+ games included.

The parents I'll grant you, but even then the 360 is 10 years old at this point. Either the kids on it are super late in the gen (and very young) or they're now teens buying their own console and making it based on other decisions.

This is a nice to have, but really that's about it. I just don't see many at all making a purchase decision on this. Good on MS though.

edit - oh shit... or this. yeah... consoles in general are on their way out as far as the just-turning-teen crowds and younger are concerned. The last 30+ years, by the time you were 6-7 you had HUNDREDS of hours logged in on a console. I have a 6 year old nephew in a house with a PS4 and 360 who probably hasn't logged more than a few hours on it.. but can tell you without looking what percent battery the ipad is at.
