Xbox One adds Xbox 360 backwards compatibility

A big seller for me, seriously considering a Xbox One now.

The thing with publishers needing to approve, is that for digital games only, right?

Not true BC doesn't seem like a game changer... It's the same as on 360. A limited list that will leaves hundreds of titles out, no?

Welp, talk about something impressive :).

This is a huge deal to many, as it ensures that 360 owners can go back to there large library of games on their new X1 without worry of losing access to their tittles.

Even better for XBLA games, as it means that digital tittles like Super Meat Boy will have a home on X1 despite only being on 360 originally. Fantastic news and I would love for Sony to do this with at least their PSN Tittles for PS4.

- Publishers need to approve but no work or cost required
oh... well drat. That's going to be the sticking point, convincing publishers to allow their games to be playable. I assume it's some kind of legal requirement, since the Xbox One adds social features that weren't around for the original games.

Edit: also it sounds like the game has to actually exist on the digital store for it to be playable, so some games are already doomed

They said that all games should work but that they require permission from the creators before implementing the game.

It makes sense that they wouldn't want to risk leaking this announcement by reaching out to every dev before making it.

That's a damn nice feature, but I got burned by the 360 BC (PAL 360 BC was pretty terrible).

Will wait and see - but regardless of what happens, some BC >>>>>>>> no BC, so I applaud them for trying.

Edit: That list is seriously tiny.

So this isn`t true BC, right? I can`t just insert a disc on a Xbox One that is offline and play it?

The game in question will have to be supported (which more then likely means it'll have to be patched).

If said publisher can't patch the game for any reason, it won't work.

Final Fantasy XIII probably won't be available since there isn't a digital version of that

Great concept.

Still got my Red Dead Redemption, Blue Dragon, Tales of Vesperia, Lost Odyssey and Eternal Sonata discs. Get these sorted MS !!

Dont sell your 360 and you dont lose anything.

A new console didnt make the old one vanish.

As I understood it you're not actually playing anything off the disk. The disk is just to verify that you own it. It'll download the full game if it's been made available.

They probably have to change the code a bit to get it to play nicely with the software emulator they've built.

So this is basically Virtual Console and not actual backward compatibility ala Wii U to Wii or PS3 to PS1. I don't have Xbox One and probably never will but this got so disappointing when they started explaining how it actually works. I was expecting Xbox 360 emulator, not Virtual Console equivalent.

I honestly can't see how this is considered anything more than a nice-to-have feature. This is especially true because it is only coming out 2 years after the start of the new gen. Anybody that is still interested in their old games has a 360 to play them. Hell I've got two of them. All this does is give you a little more space under the TV.

I'm interested in this, especially if they do arcade games, and I don't have a 360.

This only matters if they go far past that initial list

That list is completely underwhelming and it may as well not exist if they don't add much much much more than that

Wow, with Halo 5 coming out and being able to migrate my 360 games over, I don't have a really good reason not to pick up a Xbone. Maybe just finding a good bundle now.

They said in the conference that no work was required on their part, they just need their permission

I assume disc games should work regardless once this feature is implemented and live for everyone, but that download titles would require permission from the creators as I'd think their contracts with MS specifically outline their games being available on Xbox 360 marketplace only.

Phil said on stage it requires no work from devs, they just need permission to activate it.

we dont know yet. it could be emulation (unlikely),dynarec ( more likely) re-compiled executable ( likely ) or streaming( likely).

This is what makes me think it's streaming. as anything else would probably require testing (unless ms is doing all that )
also their line "better with xbox live"

Say I have Halo reach, will they allow me to theoretically redownload the reach DLC to my xbox one?

xbl arcade question. say I have dark souls downloaded on 360, can I download for the xbox one...same with kazooie and tooie for arcade...so confusing.

I think this was the best announcement at their show but only 100 games are available and it's not coming till later this year. They prepped it up as if every game would be available and it would be available now. Great announcement but kinda ended with a bit of a whimper.
