Xbox One adds Xbox 360 backwards compatibility

http://www.zdnet.com/article/emulation-is-key-to-microsofts-xbox-backward-compatibility-story/

"What we did was essentially built a virtual Xbox 360 console entirely in software. So when you launch a game via Xbox One Backward Compatibility, you'll see that the game first starts up a virtual Xbox 360 console, then launches the title. The work is ongoing as each title requires individual packaging and validation work to enable that virtual console capability, but we're committed to continually rolling out new titles each month."

Sorry if already posted.

Damn, I'd love to play Arkham Origins or City on my xb1.

I don't see it on the supported lists yet. And also MGS HD collection.. Prototype 2..

Do the games look the same or will there be less jaggies and higher frame rate due to the better hardware?

So glad this is free (for games you own) and not streaming. PSNow never interested me (I also have a ps4) with their expensive subscription fees and lag input streaming.. Plus I never owned a PS3 for more than a week (it was stolen)

Is there a way to disable the "Games Waiting to be Installed" thing or something? Because I noticed I don't see it anymore and I have a few X1 games that I don't have installed that I would think should be showing up... I tried checking to see if there was a setting I may have disabled, but I couldn't find one.

I think most people agree that PSNOW it's not a very good deal,
especially for the games I want to play,
dragons dogma, fighting games, ninja gaiden, I think that input lag is a deal breaker.

loads of people really excited for this on social media, mostly the same with me, wanna ditch their 360's or never had one

Maybe not the be all, end all.
But the BC tweet by Xbox is their most popular one so far this E3.

Pretty popular all around.

Edit: They added B/C requests to Uservoice.

Anyone else a little weirded out that some of the "biggest" announcements at the Microsoft press conference was a 30 dollar package of old games and the ability to play old games on a shiny new box? I feel like we did get a few cool looking games, but most of them were accessible on other platforms. The only big exclusive was Halo, right?

Forza, Fable, Gears (remake) and Tomb.

Yeah, same here as well - I don't see the "Ready to Install" section too. It was working yesterday (I have like 20+ Xbox One games that are not installed right now), but probably now with this 360 games compatibility stuff its not working properly. I guess we need to wait for a few patches ;).

So the Xbox One is just using the disc as a CD Key and downloading the "Xbox One" version. So these are all ports of some kind and not true emulation.

LOL, I don't think you understand how this works. It's software emulation...like how we emulate things on PC.

However...somehow...they've managed to get 360 games already running before I ever expected it (or expected it at all).

This IS what you would call "TRUE" emulation. It probably works better not reading from a disc.

No way that happens with PS3 games. Architectures are too different.

PS1/PS2 - possible with an "emulator" ran through the PS4. I don't think Sony is funding that with PS Now. What they can do is lower the price point of PS Now or include it with PS Plus.
I don't see why they can't at least check their PS Now database against your PSN account and grant you access to the games you own on the latter through PS Now. It's not as ideal as native BC, but it's a hell of a lot better a solution than 'subscribe to another service or pay for the game again.'

It's running in virtual Xbox 360, so I think it's an emulator. I don't think they have resource or manpower to port all that titles.

As someone that switched from the 360 too the PS4, I don't see any reason for me to play those games anymore to be fair, Never played last gen games when i had a new console but more power to those that enjoy the feature so fair play to MS.

wow, thread title got me wet

then I saw it's only for like... 8 games. Better than nothing but fairly useless until they include a majority of the library

edit: spoke too soon, looks like they're moving fast on this. Hell yeah, might be time to plug in my xbone once this and halo is out.

Just curious, but why the hell would I need to download the entire game if the code is on the disc?? I really don't want to fill up my entire hand drive of Xbox 360 games. Can't MS just authenticate my CD as authentic and let me play the game. My entire 360 collection is more than what MS HD has in atorage. I was hyped initially for BC but this is a hindrance.

You'd get the popular titles whose publishers are willing and able to sign off on, but I seriously doubt you'll have even 25% of existing 360 content available on the XB1 any time soon.

If I get the notable titles then it will be worth it. Shadow Complex, Geometry Wars etc.

I managed to get to the 360 boot logo but it crashed after that, said Xbox LIVE was having issues.

They are aiming for 100s of titles by year end (when it becomes available outside preview members).

I don't think you understand how this works. Hardware emulation converts legacy hardware instructions into instructions that work on current hardware. If you run an SNES emulator, the game still pushes SNES instructions, but the emulator wraps it so it works on PC hardware in Windows (assuming thats the platform you're using).

If the Xbox One was doing that, you'd just need to download the emulator code to run the games you have and it could run the games straight off the disc. This is not that case at all, the games are clearly downloading an entirely new copy of that game even if you have the disc. There might be the need for specific game work arounds like we have with other emulators (emulation is never hardware perfect, the raw power for that is crazy), but that wouldn't require you to redownload the entire game. It would require you to download the updates for the emulator, not the software.

So this is live now? I have Defense Grid and One of the Viva games. They just show up in my ready to install list? I am a preview member, but i've got nothing here. Do I need to download something first?

Xbox LIVE is shitting itself. Not everything is showing up instantly but it's live. No OS updates needed.

It's probably the disc speed, loading time etc. I don't think it meant for you to load your entire Xbox 360 collection on to it. Seriously, how many 360 games do you really still want to play.

Many 360 games required (or recommended) at least a partial install to the hard-drive. The reason it is a download is probably due to streaming from the disc, or pulling from two places (something the X1 was not designed to do...all games are full installs) is not the best way to approach emulation of the 360 and its games.

Can confirm Xbox live is definitely having issues lol. Half (literally half) of my pins disappeared and I just now got access to my ready to install list lol. It wasn't even there before.

Here is the FAQ from the official forums:

FAQ:

XBOX ONE BACKWARD COMPATIBILITY

Q: How do I play an Xbox 360 game on my Xbox One?

A: You must own a supported Xbox 360 title. (For a list of supported titles, see below) If you have a supported digital version of the game, you can install the game from the “Ready to Install” section of My games & apps. If you have a disk version of the game, you can simply insert the disk into your Xbox One console.

Q: Where is Borderlands? You showed it, but I don’t see it in Preview.

A: We are continuing to finalize all the necessary packaging and validation work with our partners to bring your favorite games to the program as soon as possible. While not part of the Preview launch, stay tuned to find out when Borderlands will be available through Xbox One Backward Compatibility.

Q: What about my other Xbox 360 games?

A: We are continuing to add more titles. Not all titles will be supported but check back and see if your titles have been added to the list. Or go to Xbox Feedback to suggest your favorites.

Q: Do I need to also own an Xbox 360 Console to play these games?

A: No, you do not need to own an Xbox 360 console.

Q: Can I buy these games from the Xbox One store?

A: If you want to purchase these games, you can buy them digitally from the store on your Xbox 360 console, on xbox.com (search for titles in Xbox 360 games) or from your local retailer.

Q: How do I get to the Xbox 360 Guide on my Xbox One?

A: While playing your Xbox 360 game on Xbox One, you can access the Xbox 360 Guide by pressing the Menu and View buttons on your Xbox One controller at the same time. (Note: some games have additional functionality when pressing either the Menu or the View button individually. Be mindful there may be unexpected behavior if you press one button prior to the other. Check the Game Specific Issues in the Known Issues for workarounds in specific titles.)

Q: Can I continue a game that I started on my Xbox 360?

A: If you have saved your games to my butt from an Xbox 360, you will be able to continue that game on the Xbox One. Some titles do not support butt storage. In those cases, game saves will not be recovered on the Xbox One. Please refer to the list below to see which titles do not support butt storage. For help on saving your games to my butt from your Xbox 360 console, check the following articles:

Setting up butt storage on 360: http://support.xbox.com/en-US/xbox-360/games/butt-save-games

Troubleshooting: http://support.xbox.com/en-US/xbox-360/games/butt-save-troubleshoot

FAQ: http://support.xbox.com/en-US/xbox-360/games/game-saves-in-the-butt-faq

Q: I saved my game on Xbox One but don’t see the saved game on my Xbox 360. What happened to my game?

A: Xbox 360 game saves are uploaded after you quit the game on Xbox One. You must quit it from Home or launch another non-backward compatible game in order for the save to be uploaded. If you turn off your console, it will be uploaded when you turn it back on.

Q: Can I play multiplayer with friends who are playing the game on Xbox 360 or Xbox One?

A: Yes! For games that have multiplayer, you will be able to play with others who own the title on Xbox 360. For Xbox One users, only members of the Public Preview audience who own the game will be able to play with you during this beta.

Q: Will I need to earn my game achievements again on the Xbox One?

A: No, if you originally earned the game achievement on the Xbox 360 you will not get duplicate achievements nor lose your previous achievements.

Known issues:

Game Saves

Save your Xbox 360 games on Xbox One often! If you leave the game (i.e. launch a full screen app or another game) you could potentially lose any unsaved progress.

Creating Parties and Chatting

When engaging with Xbox 360 users or other users of Xbox One playing Xbox 360 games, use the Party and Chat functions on the Xbox 360 Guide (press Menu and View buttons to bring up the menu and select Party or Chat).

Navigation with multiple controllers

If there is more than one controller connected to your Xbox One, only one controller can be used for navigating the Xbox 360 Guide.

Home Screen Tile performance

Playing an Xbox 360 game inside the large tile of the Xbox One Home screen can cause audio and visual performance degradation. Play games in full screen mode to avoid this.

In-game issues (for all games)

Rich presence says “Home” instead of something game specific.
The ESRB splash screen or disclaimer text does not show at the beginning of games.
After the Xbox 360 boot animation renders, the game sometimes takes a few seconds to load, just be patient.

Game Specific Issues

A Kingdom for Keflings: May not use correct avatar when playing offline.
Defense Grid: Pressing the View button will reset the level if pressed during gameplay. If you are trying to call up the Xbox 360 guide it is recommended that you first press and hold the Menu button then press View to avoid resetting the level.
Geometry Wars Evolved: It is possible to start a game before the Xbox Live sign-in completes, and when it does it will return you back to the game’s main menu.
Hexic: Corners of locked tiles in Survival mode are not rendering correctly.
Kameo: If you receive the error “problem with the disc you are using”, it is the game’s generic error, it is likely not an issue with the disc.
Mass Effect: Framerate degradations in 360 version may manifest slightly differently in Backward Compatibility version.
Perfect Dark Zero: Framerate degradations in 360 version may manifest slightly differently in the Backward Compatibility version.
Perfect Dark Zero: Ranked multi-player is not yet supported in Backward Compatibility.
Perfect Dark: Co-operative multi-player between 360 and Backward Compatibility is not yet supported.
Super Meat Boy: There is a pre-existing bug from Xbox 360 where controller input doesn’t behave correctly with controller 2.
Toy Soldiers: Online multi-player may sometimes get out of sync.
Toy Soldiers Cold War: Existing framerate degradations in 360 version may manifest slightly differently in Backward Compatibility version.
Zuma: There is a pre-existing bug from Xbox 360 where achievements that should be earned, are not always earned.
Zuma: Some users are not getting achievements. To make achievements work for a specific user (“User X”) you can perform the following workaround. This will require 2 user accounts (“User X” and “User Y”:
o Sign in “User X” and “User Y” into Xbox One.
o Choose “User Y” and start Zuma
o Proceed past the “Press A” to the main menu.
o Ensure that you have seen “User Y signed into Xbox LIVE” notification.
o Bring up the Xbox 360 Guide by pressing Menu and View buttons at the same time.
o Sign out “User Y”
o Sign in “User X”

Ok this is interesting and gives info about how they do it.

They basically are customizing an emulation package for each game, but I wonder why they are attaching this to a download of the game and not just running off the disc itself if it has the same data.

I think that is the roundabout way of not stepping on publishers' toes when they are planning on doing a "remaster" while allowing for games to be played that weren't going to get that treatment
