Xbox One adds Xbox 360 backwards compatibility

Anyone else's pins playing up? Mine keep disappearing then coming back, sometimes half are missing. Not a problem, just thought it was interesting and might be indicative of the updates happening on servers.

Pins are one of the first things that go down if XBL gets slammed, to save resources.
 
Didn't the 360 have this kind of backward compatibility? Limited titles, software emulated. I remember doing a hip hop hooray when I found out about that and literally used it once.

I have a phat ps3 with PS2 compatibility. Used it once or twice.

I think this is a nice checkmark to try to capture 360 holdouts but I don't know about its real world sales impact.

I don't think that's it. Otherwise you'd just install the game from your disc rather than having to download it.

EDIT: Also certain games (like PGR4) really didn't like being fully installed.

I used the shit out of my PS3 phat, but when it died I just hooked up my PS2. And that was cool too, since I got to use my old PS1 memory cards.

Anyway, the more I look at this, the happier I am just because I have lots of games. It's not going to make me rush out and buy a One, but it's another few cups in the bucket to do that. Just adds value.

Since digital titles, it´s a thing to play a game again. Even XBLA games are worth it.
I´m a little sad about those GWG for 360 I missed to "click on", when they were available during the last months.

That was my reaction exactly. I can't believe MS has found a way to make it work. For X360 owners who upgraded to XONE this is a huge boon. It'll be one less console in their gaming space.

For people like me, it'll give us a reason to pick some of the gems that were available on X360 and play them on XONE. Good showing MS.

Haha they said native support. It just software emulation just like x360.

Look how many people they fooled. People talking about sell you x360 now...lol clueless.
 
This was their most exciting announcement for me, and hope it turns out well. I keep my old 360 on standby in case I ever want to play Tales of Vesperia or Lost Odyssey again. But it's going to depend on implementation. I anxiously await what happens.

No work from the publishers and they've essentially built an emulator in the XBO. Why are you so against this?

They are emulating PowerCPU in a HyperV container (which has 360 OS). I interviewed for the company made the technology and hold the trademark. (IBM, formerly Transitive in Manchester).

PS: the tech is VERY impressive.
 
"Behind the scenes, Microsoft has built a full Xbox 360 emulator for its Xbox One console. "Xbox One Backward Compatibility is an Xbox 360 emulator that runs on Xbox One and is used to play Xbox 360 games," says a Microsoft spokesperson in a statement to The Verge.

When you launch an Xbox 360 game on the Xbox One the software will startup a virtual version of the Xbox 360 console to play the game. If you have a disc that’s on the supported list then it will simply download the game and ask you to keep the disc in the tray for validation purposes. If you have digital copies of Xbox 360 games then they’ll just automatically show up"

I think that is the roundabout way of not stepping on publishers' toes when they are planning on doing a "remaster" while allowing for games to be played that weren't going to get that treatment

The fact that you need to download the entire game is interesting and makes me think it's more than just straight emulation because if it was you should have been able to run the code off of the disc. So they're probably doing something to the game to make it more performant on the Xbox One.

I think the sizable jump graphically that gen was gigantically bigger than last gen to this gen.

I'm just gonna guess that Capcom isn't going to approve Street Fighter 4 to be forwards compatible with the xbox one. Oh well...


I think this is really cool and I hope they can keep the compatible game list growing quickly. It's frustrating when the one game you want to play isn't compatible.

Damn, I wish I was part of the preview program so I could try out mass effect. Is there an invite begging thread? I couldn't find one with search
 
So did they elaborate on HOW? They said a few things that very much hinted that it was not native. You can put YOUR disc in to start a DOWNLOAD of the game that will play and leverage the 'power of xbox live'

To me that seem to imply some sort of streaming, but with those few details it could just as easily be powered by mutant squirrels from the moon of saturn :p

It sounds like you're downloading a compatible version of the game that Microsoft did the "converting" or "rebuilding" or whatever to me and you'd need to keep the disc in to keep people from passing around discs. I don't rightly know though
makes sense to me, I guess. That's why it's limited is that they need to do the work after they get permission.

A big thing not talked about enough - although probably obvious - is you can take screen shots and clips of the 360 games like any regular XB1 game. Really rad.
 
whilst its amazing news, it personally irks me to no end! i sold my 360 a few years back and all the games, i used the money to rebuy some games on my PS3 and put towards a PS4 as i felt they had the most unique offerings, and the lack of backwards compatibility on the xbox one meant i had no additional reason to go for it (right then ps3 game streaming was known to be coming to ps4), i'm even sure Microsoft said this wasn't possible - but they had apr disaster back then! So it annoys me knowing that perhaps i could have kept my games, and perhaps got an xbox one

on the bright side it gives me reasons to get an xboxone
