Xbox One adds Xbox 360 backwards compatibility

"Small Arms" is on the compatibility list and I own it digitally but it's not showing up in my list to install. All the others did except that one.

Everything I know about emulation says this shouldn't be possible. Would love to know how this is being pulled off. Amazed.

Small Arms and Geo Wars 2 were the ones that didn't show up for me. Still aren't there.

It's not showing up for me either.

I am in the Preview - not sure how to invite though :(.
Open the preview app on your Xbox One and select "Invite" to choose friends to send an invite to.

The people asking for invites should note that it takes quite a while (Usually over a week) to get an invite from Microsoft and getting into the program, but not everybody gets in.

I hope we found out more about how the emulator works. Like how do they emulate a 3.2ghz core on a 1.75ghz core. I thought it would be impossible...

Games are obviously re-compiled for the Xbone. Otherwise you wouldn't have to download the ENTIRE game regardless while owning the disc. Microsoft worked on a way to [more] easily re-compile 360 code for the Xbox One, they're not doing emulation of the 360 hardware.

Right now I really regret not getting all the past Xbox 360 GwG since the Xbox One came out, I can tell you right now, i'm getting every future GwG on 360.

I felt the same I was like 'nah these games ain't never getting played on my Xbox one' wellll....

Who throws away games ? Donate them at the very least.

Cleary I need to spell out my "reasons". Halo 4 disk chewed on by my bulldog, worked fine as long as I had the game downloaded to my 360 HDD. Gears 3, nobody wanted it close to me when I offered..Also had wear on the top part of the disk, so Goodwill wouldn't accept It due to their "like new/gently used" policy on games according to the employee..Feel better? Either way hyped beyond measure!

If anyone can send me an invite to the preview program please give me a chance. I'll owe you in any way I can :)

My GT IS: xBuTcHeRx, add me as a friend as well :)
Thanks again to anyone who's kind enough to give me a chance in the program.

For those playing are the games enhanced at all or is it a 100% same experience? I am about 60% downloaded with Kameo then will install Perfect Dark Zero. So I have not had time to test anything myself.

I have fired up about 4 games so far.. they run great... all seem smoother than I remember?? But just slick as hell how it all works. The cloud saves... also just unlocked my first achievement... seems like I am on a very slick 360, my system was super slow at the end so this is just fantastic all around for me.

I Got you... preview invite sent

i think some things people are forgetting, the small amount of games are because its new, and because publishers have to ok it with there BC program. Another thing is i played perfect dark just now, and it works.....it just works super well.
So im excited about the OPTION, and i would rather have this then not. I hope all the publishers want there games on this.

Great to hear. Microsoft nailed it with features and games for this holiday.

This very exciting for me. If it works out as I hope it will, Im 95% sure I will buy an xbone at some point in the future. I still play my 360 almost every day (ME3 multi is too good).

Sure looks like Emulation. Even the Startup of the Xbox 360 and the achievement notifications are accurate. The game takes a minute to start up the first time as it checks your Xbox360 account. It even logs you into the 360. Also has the same option screens, like when you hit the Xbox button.
It's actually very impressive.

So a couple months ago my friend invited me, and it has said Thanks for joining! You'll get a service message soon, and never got one. Anyone else have this problem?

Report it as an issue.

Has anyone tried using a disc copy of Nuts & Bolts? I got an error saying "This game isn't playable here", even though it's one of the games that are supported.

Playing Perfect Dark and it plays great
Agreed. Been playing too much actually, haha.

Sent out the remaining Preview invites that I got and have to call it for now. If I have time I'll offer to do some more tomorrow but I got a good chunk of you in today (those who PM'd me or got my gamertag earlier). Enjoy guys.

It seems that asking for invites to the preview program is OK here so I'm going to throw my hat into the ring. Anyone looking to beef up their friend list can add me too if they'd like. My XBL is a ghost town. Most of my friends are primarily PC gamers.

Much appreciated and I'll try to return the favor however I can!

Just because the games are re-compiled for the Xbox One doesn't mean the services are integrated into the Xbox One's services layer. Xbox One XBLA and OS are drastically different. The Xbox One likely has to boot up the 360 OS to handle all of that. Replacing the 360 services in every game emulated *ported* would be absolute pure insanity.

There is literally zero possibility of the Xbox One APU emulating the 360 hardware anywhere close to full speed. Xbone is also x86 architecture while the 360 was PPC, further complicating stuff. What Microsoft has done is certainly impressive, building a compiler that re-compiles 360 code to work well on the Xbox One. But it isn't emulation. It has to be native software.

This why the list of supported titles will be small and grow slowly, it is faster then a straight port job but still requires extensive QA and likely some special case support for certain games.

Wow, it really just pops up there if you have the game. Currently installing Mass Effect.

This is so fucking great, I need to pick up some cheap 360 games! And Games with Gold just got a whole lot better.

Were there any Xbox 360 games that were "disc only," like not having a digital version? I know a ton of PS3 games never got put on PSN, wondering if the same is true of the 360

Yep. Games on Demand didn't exist for quite a few years. And they never got teh complete catalog up.

I get one like every week ..... no idea if there is a way to have them install on their own but I am always prompted, impossible to miss.

Side note... so what do we do with the games that have the save built into them... my Geo Wars save is I think just part of the game but it will not let you upload the game even though it is only 15mb.

Games don't save to the executable. Some may write data to your profile (which is why a profile can grow to multiple MB in size), but the packaged executable is never modified on the 360. Not even by patches.

Small Arms and Geo Wars 2 were the ones that didn't show up for me. Still aren't there.

Are you sure you didn't get those games on another profile?

There is nothing that "obviously" indicates the code was re-compiled. Until someone pulls a container and disassembles it all we have are guesses and interview comments.

Based on the latter, it is emulation, with each game running in its "own" 360. Re-compiling is a FAR cry from zero effort.

If they've gone the emulation route and built an Xbox 360 emulator in a Hyper-V container, getting new games setup would be simple as long as the game exists on XBLA or GoD. For disc only games, MS would have to certify a GoD version, and then dump that into the emulator.

That's a solution that fits with the public description so far.

Another option could be dynamic recompilation, which may be in fact be in use for the base emulator, though that is just a random guess. I wouldn't put stock in that unless someone on the development team says that's what they are doing.

More importantly though, if this is running on Xbox One it can easily run on a modern PC. Which means Microsoft could use it to sell 360 titles via the Windows 10 app store if they wanted to. There are many business reasons why that wouldn't happen, but from a technical perspective, it is an option.

If you have a ton of games installed the 360 UI slows down a little due to indexing and pulling data off the net. Here you don't have to worry about that.

Go to the Xbox.com store and get it for free, and if you're in the preview program it should appear in your games list.

My games list? You mean my achievements online? I have played over 1200 360 games so .. finding it might be tough.

I do a search or Hexic HD and nothing under Xbox One.. only 360. I most certainly owned it.

I am also missing Geo Wars 2... all my games were bought under this account which I have had since the 2001 Live beta.

In "my games and apps", under "Games", go to the right until you see the "ready to install" and it should be there. If you have it digitally on 360.
