The reactions just kept building with it each one, it was so great to watch hehe.

All people said me if was impossible when I opened a thread regarding the possibility of using Kickstarter. But here we hare, with half the goal reached in a day...
Also, I'm sad, no news of Shenmue 1+2 HD port?
i bet you some people at sega are watching the kickstarter with a lot of interest

europe here, good morning my fellow earth citizens.

don't have much money, but 29$ won't kill me..already backed up.

I'm still trying to believe what happened.

Welcome.

Here comes EuroGAF to finish it off.

I've never played Shenmue but this is hype and I backed it.

I have a feeling that PS4 physical copies will be incoming.

And I have to wake up for THIS?
Thank God.

God Is Real. It is among us.
He was testing our patience all along.

Well, God, we have been patient.

*happy tears*

Ok so after watching the video and reading through the page, there some weird things that stuck out:

  • The pitch video seemed a bit amateurish? Also what's with the awful dubbing (the game characters)? I get the old Shenmue dub had a certain "charm" but its 2015, dubs this bad shouldn't fly anymore (then again it doesn't seem clear they intent to dub the actual game into English which i misleading - or did I miss that)?
  • Since none of us are stupid, we can assume an outside publisher is involved. However, even if IGA didn't name them at the start, he was super upfront that most of the budget (if they only hit their goal) was coming from a publisher. Sure we can assume a publisher is involved here but I don't like that we HAVE to assume nor do I like that they aren't named (again we can assume Sony but we shouldn't have to assume shit).
  • Who is developing this game exactly? I see a list of people involved but I I can't link them all to one development house. Yooka-Laylee is Playtonic (ex-Rare). Bloodstained and Migthy No. 9 are Inticreates. Shenmue II is YsNet? Shibuya Productions? Neilo Inc?
  • Reward Tiers seem wonky? Like there should be more gradations? Maybe they calculated and felt it would be better this way though?
  • No budget breakdown. I hate when Kickstarters skip out on this :/
  • In general the writeup feels like it could be a lot more robust :/
If I missed any details please clear them up for me! I don't think this model is inherently problematic (using Kickstarter to gauge interest in niche games) but there are a bunch of things about this Kickstarter specifically that could have been done better or made more clear.

Shenmue 1/2 rereleases, I wonder if anybody at SEGA has thought about that

I don't. That Sega is long gone. This is only happening because Suzuki needs his career back, and there's enough interest outside Sega for him to leverage.

Mashin Haters said:
did u guys watch that kickstart video? The voice acting is absolutely terrible. I hope they redo it and facial animations.

ITT: People don't know what Shenmue is.

Sony is almost definitely funding this.

I mean isn't that the overriding assumption with all the meetings that have happened at Sony this last year with members from this team. The pictures were posted on gaf. Its not like they just stopped by to help keep the lawns mowed:)

Man who would have thought that Shenmue 3 would be trending on twitter.

All us the nerds who talk about it regardless plus the audience today lol

I found it a bit annoying that Sony announced it on their stage and didn't even fund the game. Announcing a kickstarter is pretty low, in my opinion.
They're definitely an essential part of the game's funding. This Kickstarter just gauges interest, and more importantly, it raises awareness of the title and allows long time fans to get involved directly. It's working out brilliantly at the moment.

Think of all the loose storylines that'll be tied up, after a fucking decade.

You know Lan Di is going to eventually meet Xuiying, and it is going to be so fucking epic.

Imagine the moment when Ryo and Lan Di finally meet, and Ryo has to reflect on Xuiying's words about revenge, and how it consumes you.

FUCK

Is this beating Star Citizen in getting this high this fast?

This won't catch Star Citizen.

But Star Citizen didn't get high really fast, it was a slow burn over years. This is now the second fastest kickstarter to reach a million ever, however. Did it in a hour and a half. Yooka-Laylee took 4 hours.

Basically they just needed a Kick starter page with the words "Shenmue 3" on it and they will hit 5 million.

Far more interested in better gameplay systems in the sequel. I mean I want to see that but I want a good current playable game more.

yeah, here's to hoping sega sees this & gets Shenmue 1 HD out the pipeline already, wish we knew how much (if any?) work had been done before that & Skies HD got tragically canned

Bumped my pledge up to $500.

you're a hero, m'man

Sony is almost definitely funding this.

absolutely; we're kidding ourselves if we think sega would've done this or even Yakuza 5 without them

Man who would have thought that Shenmue 3 would be trending on twitter.

i did
I ALWAYS DID

I think I love you for freaking out like this.

Is this what heaven feels like.

Never thought I'd make an uncontrollable yell during a gaming conference. The Dreams are Reality age is here!

Same. The very grumpy sleepy girlfriend came in wondering why the hell I was shouting and banging the kitchen work surface like a loon. NO REGRETS.

Shenmue II is so awesome, I wish I could play that game again with fresh eyes. I've always maintained that, while Shenmue I was a much more crafted experience (it felt like a p&p RPG with an actual dungeon master creating the entire world in front of you), shenmue II was a much better game. Shenmue II was basically a Jackie Chan movie.

The bits with Ren of Heaven are probably my favorite parts of that game.

No doubt this is a very rough Kickstarter campaign, if this was any other game it would be in a very tight spot due to the issues with the campaign. I'm hoping they start to fix these issues over the next few days after the initial hype starts to die down, or else this going to pull a Yooka-Laylee (Has an amazing start but then falls flat). The biggest issues is the lack of middle tiers and the fact that we really have no information on how the budget (both kickstarter and outside investor) will be used.

I can't remember where I heard it but I thought there was some sort of weird licensing with the engine or maybe some 3rd party stuff that had to do with making the game which is why it would really hard to port or remake. Anyone hear something like this?

Why would you assume shenmue 3 would only be 1 chapter?

Where'd I say that?

Shenmue 1 was the 1st chapter
Shenmue 2 was chapters 3-5
(there was a side-story manga that covered chapter 2)

There's no doubt in my mind that Shenmue 3 will be a multi-chapter adventure. All I'm saying is that it wouldn't be possible for Shenmue 3 to be chapters 6-16. It'd have to be released on 4 blu-rays, take up 500 gigs of HDD space, etc.

I'm partly joking, but the most important thing to note is that S3 would not make its projected Dec 2017 release-date if it's intended to finish the saga. Either the possibility exists that future games are being considered(yeah I know..even after the 15+ year hiatus) or Yu has revised the script so much that he can end it with this game.

Not sure how I feel about either case.

I woke up, saw this and was like HOLY SHIT. I don't even have to think about it, I pledged already. And so cheap too, only $29 for a digital version. Just wait till the rest of the world wakes up and this bad boy will be funded by the end of the day.

I can agree with your assessment.

I still end up preferring Shenmue 1 because of just how well developed that world was.

So Ryo is going to learn to walk on fucking water in this game.

I love that Shenmue is going down a Dragonball route. I can't wait to see what kind of crazy awesome ancient martial arts techniques Ryo learns.

And I hope he fights a fucking dragon.
