Sega hasn't gone full Konami, they're one of the strongest PC publishers around with Relic and Total War under their belt.

They also a pretty awesome with their digital download offerings. They're one of those who puts out games worth playing. Like Fantasy Zone II DX on the 3DS, or Monster World IV in english for the first time ever, or the first english release of the arcade version of Wonderboy in Monster Land.

They usually are putting out stuff that is quirky and unique and not just a rom packed with an emulator.

Man, never seen people go so apeshit about a game. Wow.

And great gif material, too :D

People have tried to downplay it for ages

But seriously, if you know your gaming history, Shenmue is a huge deal.

I think SEGA gets a far worse rep then they deserve, honestly. They gave all sorts of niche, wonderful titles a chance, and listened to fans and provided excellent support on their titles, but they are shit at advertising and not focused on their old franchises so people condemn them. They created, in my opinion, some of the best underlooked gems last generation.

Totally agree, people tend to overlook they're more of a PC powerhouse than anything else at the moment. Relic and Creative Assembly under one roof oh man.

I can somewhat agree with this. However....

Puyo Puyo Tetris never came out here. So I am still angry.

Blame Ubisoft, they own the Tetris license at the moment.

I don't blame them. I just see a fact. In Japan Sega went crazy on mobile and got some hits. In the west, they kept their PC franchises because they were relatively stable. Shenmue isn't their... sort of thing at the moment.

This is amazing.

It's already the fastest video game kickstarter to reach $1 million in funding, and the second fastest kickstarter ever in general.

This thing is obliterating records. It beat Yooka-Laylee by like 4 hours.

Also, it's hard to compare this to the Pebble Time campaign, since that cost $159 minimum and this is $29.

Sony then?

I don't know, during the conference, the Sony dude kept saying THEIR project.

And it would messed up to reveal a game that "everyone has been asking for" on your stage and then reveal it as a kickstarter that you are planning on funding if there is proof of interest. Completely messed up

Shenmue III is going to be fucking great. People shit on Shenmue I and II because their mechanics are pretty unrefined, but they were revolutionary at the time. It's a lot like how System Shock has a really obtuse UI these days, because it did so much, so early.

With 15 years worth of refinement, I think Shenmue III is going to be greatness. Yu Suzuki is the man.

Never been a fan of the series, but kudos to Sony for supporting it. Although it fell a little weird to launch a kickstarter during a conference.

Did they want to see the demand maybe? or did they have little faith in it, in order to fund it and publish it?

Anyway glad for the fans to see it being alive.

Honestly, I've never played any of the Shenmue's, but considering how special these seem to be in peoples hearts I would like to try them out. What do people recommend? Where can I pick them up?

Do they have the music rights?

I wonder what exactly the team acquired and what can be repurposed.

SEGA would probably give Yu anything he wants. He was allowed to create bomb after bomb and still get funding with his AM+ team IIRC.

And then when he left SEGA and made Shenmue City he got funding from them again. I don't think it's going to be a problem.

it's looking like SFV

Yup

I love this trend by Sony.

Shenmue used members of the legendary Sega Sound Team, which was Sega's in-house music talent. SST has been pretty much Yu Suzuki's go-to sound guys his entire career; while they did other Sega stuff, they primarily handled Yu Suzuki's project. They are known for basically all the greatest Sega songs throughout the years.

I wouldn't doubt for a minute they'll come back for this.

Mainly meant I'm looking forward to hearing the soundtrack to the new game, if it's anything like the older. Seems like they have the composer who worked on several of the songs from 1+2, but I have no idea if they'd have rights to bring in the older tunes. But I'm okay with that, especially if we get the same quality as before.

Please excuse this question if it's already been answered.

Isn't Shenmue a Sega property? How can a kickstarter like this exist for a brand that exists under a company like Sega?

Yu Suzuki must own the rights the character? Shenmue appeared in All Stars Racing though..

Also that kickstarter would have to fund a Yakuza Zero like game engine to be relavant and please the fans. Thats going to take alot of money. I wish Sega had just made this game using the yakuza engine.

Adam Boyes: "This is very much their project, but we wanted to celebrate their announcement on our stage...."

I don't think Sony has anything to do with this. But the rest of the funding is surely coming from somewhere.

So if Sega did sell off Shenmue, this means that there's no Ryu in Sonic and Sega All Stars Racing Omniverse.

If they didn't commit to Toejam and Earl...

SEGA outright said he could do whatever he wants with the Shenmue franchise as long as he funded it himself is the basic of it, it's more complex than that, but basically while he doesn't -own- the IP, SEGA are a-okay with him doing whatever with it that he wants to do and give their consent to whatever he chooses to do with it, if he can fund his idea for it.

Has to be Sony, otherwise why alienate Xbox users?

Sega is letting Yu Suzuki do this.

Most likely, whomever is funding Shenmue III wanted some sort of proof that the title could make $2 million dollars in earnings, and Yu Suzuki is using kickstarter precisely to prove that.

This is basically Yu Suzuki turning to Kickstarter to un-blackball himself.

SEGA copyright is still in the video.

Yu Suzuki has just obtained the license.

Ryo is still 100% SEGA DNA.
