SHENMUE 3 kickstarter (PC/PS4) - FINAL DAY - NEW KS RECORD GO GO GO!

Amazing that this thread is keeping pace with the Final Fantasy VII thread. The dream is finally real.

Only in 2015 would a respected game developer have to beg people for money.

This is demeaning.

I mean it's awesome that the game is coming out, but demeaning.

I think you have a very strange definition of begging. Do you think asking for a bank loan to start up a business is demeaning? It's all part of life! You aim to get funding one way or another :p

Just curious, but how many units did the original Shenmues sell?

In America, Shenmue sold 450k. Worldwide, surely over 1.5 million. This on a console that probably had about 4 or 5 million consoles sold by that time...Hell of a good attach ratio.

Shenmue II on XBox sold around 200k if I remember correctly. May be off on that, but I do remember it definitely hitting 100k, which used to be somewhat of a milestone for a month of sales in those old Sales-Age threads I used to contribute data for.

Looking at the fact that it took 15 years to get the opportunity to create another title of a not very successful game series is quite the argument how many more options such people have today.

I am wondering if the creator specifically asked to do a kickstarter so the fans can be involved. There seemed to be some pretty heartfelt things said in the kickstarter description. I don't know

Ohh, god yes, yes so much.

Eh, I'm indifferent to this. I feel Sony (if they are indeed funding it) should be putting that money towards Yakuza.

Have Sega update the engine, push them to release it in other regions within a week or so of the Japanese release, turn it into the AAA franchise it deserves to be.

Shenmue's time has passed, it should just go into the sweet night with grace and dignity and let the superior series take its place....

This will reach it's goal no doubt.

The game won't come out for at most 3 years. IN that time. Sony should definitely talk to Sega about porting over Shenmue 1 and 2 in HD at least.

I seriously wonder how confused many of the people who backed this, but say they've never played the originals are going to be when Shenmue III has lots of supernatural stuff in it. After hearing about how intricate and grounded Shenmue I and II were.

Thank you to the replies on how Yu Suzuki could kickstart this. The return of Shenmue will be great to behold.

Too much hype to sleep tonight. FF 7 and this.

Beg for money? He's selling a product. There's a difference between "please donate" and "buy this in advance so I can find development"
We're not doing this as a favor to him but rather as a voluntary purchase decision based on our interest for the product being sold.

Assume Sony had said we're gonna foot the bill. Early buyers get access to the following reward tiers (signed art books and stuff). Zero practical difference from what actually happened.

That huber reaction was priceless. I found the entire 11hr E3 stream and skipped around a bit. It's all the sweeter because they were just calming down after the FFVII reveal.

I loved how both TLG and Shenmue were just one thing on the screen against a black background as a trigger. A single feather and a single Sakura petal.

The people who downplayed Shenmue for years always came off as nose thumbing. This is huge news.

Massive news, warms my heart to see so many people hyping up a Yu Suzuki game again. I never thought the legend would ever have a comeback and if he did I didn't imagine it'd be this big. But it is and I can finally play one more fantastic gem by him.

These past two days have been amazing. NWC was fantastic and they'd better do it again.
Sony dropped some long awaited megatons on us, and they were all glorious.

And to top it off: Uncharted looks really good too! =D

Already backed for $100 BUT I DONT KNOW WHICH VERSION TO GET. D=

Shenmue 1 can only be played on a Dreamcast. Shenmue 2 requires either a European Dreamcast, an Xbox, or an Xbox 360. People will tell you the Xbox version is inferior.

Not true. You can play the Euro version of Shenmue II with a US Dreamcast using an import disc such as this...

http://www.amazon.com/SEGA-Dreamcast-DCIE-Import-Enabler/dp/B0036UHVX0

You have to put the disc in, boot up the console, open the lid, swap in Shenmue II disc then close lid each time you want to play. Not too difficult.0

Edit: Whoops sorry already corrected. Had the thread open for a little it's moving fast.

This takes me back to the days when Yu Suzuki was one of the top game makers in the world.

I am so stoked to play a big budget Yu Suzuki game again. I can't believe it. One of gaming's greatest auteurs is finally back.

Its pretty obvious what is going on. Sony has agreed to fund the project if the kickstarter could reach a goal. Its more about seeing interest in the project before they are willing to shell out the large budget. Its incredibly shitty that a Multibillion dollar corporation has to fleece its fans of a few million before they are willing to pay for the game but hey its cool cause its Shenmue apparently

Which part of fleecing their fans includes letting them get a digital copy of the game for $29, probably half the price e final retail game will be?

I like Yakuza in every single possible way more and Yakuza 5 is my favourite game but...

YOU GO CLEAN THAT MOUTH OF YOURS! Suzuki's vision must be complete, the world owes that to him.

(But bro Yakuza 5 is really fucking good)

This is raising money fast ... Needless to say I backed it too. Everyone who is on gaf and doesn't back Shenmue 3 should be ashamed. This is a one in a lifetime project.

Sony is fucked now though. No matter how many new IP or first party exclusives they bring next year, E3 will be a disappointment.
