SHENMUE 3 kickstarter (PC/PS4) - FINAL DAY - NEW KS RECORD GO GO GO!

So how many Shenmue sequels are needed to cover the whole story =)

I might sound crazy, but I hope Yu Suzuki doesn't pull back his ambition at all. There are 16 chapters, Shenmue I was chapter 1, Shenmue 2 was Chapters 3-6 (they cut chapter 2, the boat ride to china). I hope they split the remaining chapters up into at least two full games.

Am I the only one thinking it is incredibly cheap of Sony to not fund Shenmue 3 on their own?

Was my initial thought. But on second thoughts it's great publcity for the game. Plus Sony are open to all methods of game development indie/pub fund/KS/in-house etc..They're doing a great job keeping up with gaming trends in general.

Placeholders.

Scripts will be in Japanese, voiced by some of the original voice actors.
I can't imagine the models and animation being anything else than quick test material either.

I would agree that the material from the trailer is rather bad. They should indicate this is just test material and nothing definite if that's the case.
I hope so, I guess it's too early for me to worry about it. :P
Personally I'd love to play the game with the Japanese voice and english subtitles.

My expectations is Shenmue will get 4-5 Million by the end of this, based on the fact it's probably gonna get to 2 million in less than 24 hours, dedicated yet hardcore fanbase, hype for years that even people who have not played Shenmue are familiar with, fabelled game designer, not only is it a spiritual successor but an actual official continuation of a game that is beloved to many for its story and characters, and the 4 million stretch goal is enticing.

Shenmue will sell well in this day and age.

Firstly Sony know how to market their games right unlike Sega. Plus there are a lot people who missed out on it and been wondering what the fuss has been about these past 10 years, who will likely pick it up.

It also has the type of setting and story to set it apart. It's a kung fu epic. Outside of, like, Mortal Kombat, there aren't too many single player kung fu stories in gaming at the moment.

The game will be the most expensive let down ever to some of you guys that are donating 100 plus dollars. I cannot believe what I'm reading!

You know what's so beautiful about that Huber reaction, you rarely see that kind of emotion and excitement from other people in the industry. People like Huber and Bosman are just refreshing.

What a wonderful evening.

Yeah, I was watching on Youtube and their reacting was just completely cool and soulless. Also giving a B to the conference, etc.

GT guys are cool.

This is Yu Suzuki. Remember how insane VF5 looked when it first released? I think they'll eventually bang out some awesome character models.

I think what we're seeing here right now is something built without any budget at all.

Wouldn't the lack of special effects outside civilians and architecture make it cheaper? You don't have to pay that many people to animate. IMO they'll have a fun time getting voice actors. Which makes me hope they get a tier for different languages. I suspect the assets needed would be inside the game's engine. You can make a building look outstanding by giving it realistic features. The water looks great, but even a beginner can make realistic looking water. That's not a bad thing it's just an observation and assumption. Technology has basically made ShenMue come alive in other games, but the entire experience is what you aren't getting at all.

Hopefully Shenmue III will be chapters 7 to 16 then :D

How much do you guys think this game will get? I'd be straight up disappointed if it didn't get at least $10m by the end of it. I mean Star Citizen got 77m.

Star Citizen has had years worth of Crowd Funding, this just has a month. Until the first 3 days are over it's really going to be hard to predict where this will end up. I have a sad feeling this one is going to drop like a rock (Like Yooka-Laylee did after it's first 3 days) due to the lack of higher tiers and how little important info (like budget breakdown) in the campaign. If they fix both of those within the next two days I expect it to have a pretty healthy campaign that should pass $4M at least (Low balling it until I see how bad the after hype drop-off is).

Yeah, it's the insane hand-crafted experience shenmue offered. I always compare it most to Majora's Mask, except it was taken to a ridiculous level.

Again, I hope Yu Suzuki doesn't pull back his ambition at all.

Different situations.

Star Citizen is banking on the dreams of people who shell out megabucks for HOTAS joysticks, Titan X's and 4K monitors, some pretty fat whales right there, obviously not all of them (I only gave 45 bucks) also Chris is a very charismatic salesman.

How the hell do people approve of this kickstarter BS for a game being introduced at E3? This will become a new trend that people will blindly defend.
Nah, there's maybe 2 games that could get away with this and Shenmue is one of them. And to be frank I'd sell out most of my principles to finally play Shenmue 3, I'm sure plenty feel the same

I told myself I'd use this gif when the game (I figured it would be a matter of when rather than if), and I'm happy that we've reached the occasion where we can. Kind of matches the feelings I have that they'd announce a kickstarter at E3. Of any game that fans have clamored for for years or more than a decade, this makes sense, but this also might be a very big precedent.

Either way, I'm very happy with E3 so far. It'll be my first time kickstarting a game, and I wonder if I'll be contributing to the main goal or stretch goals by the time I do. Only regret with this is I'd want a physical PS4 copy, and HD 1 & 2 in some form too, but I'll take what I can get.

I'm only in for $29 at the moment but expect to step it up if they clarify things like how they're going to improve the character art.

*first time backer* Put me down for $185 :) Gotta have that t-shirt!! Not really into art books but they always sell for crazy amounts on ebay hehehe.

Onward to 2,000,000!

I have never played a single Shenmue and I am excited for this. Probably going to back it soon.

Now I just need to figure out how to play Shenmue 1 and 2.

We just want the story to conclude. Can't believe this is happening for both Shenmue and Twin Peaks after all those years.
Shenmue III doesn't have to be the best game ever.
Still it certainly will be a lot better than how the trailer looks.

Now I just need to figure out how to play Shenmue 1 and 2.
Just wait for them to be released on PSN. Can't take long until they'll be made available (hopefully remastered).

HOLY HELL.
This is surreal, and strange too.

I mean, it isn't even a spiritual successor, it's the official sequel, but...HOW?!? I mean, who has the rights of Shenmue? In the SIII trailer part, I saw in the right corner "original games @ SEGA, @ Ys Net"

@= copyright symbol

Does it mean that Yu himself has the rights? Also, it seems to be its own project, not backed by Sony as a "mysterious publisher", going by Boyes' words on stage too.

For starters, they are no longer managing the project using a single spreadsheet.

75 percent funded!
Not to mention 65k lines on a spreadsheet is a thing of the past. That means they can finally report all these expenses!

(I'm taking the piss but I'm super happy for Shenmue fans)

You can get ShenMue 2 on Xbox and it might have the ShenMue 1 movie. I'd suggest playing the original. There's even an English subtitle mod for the Dreamcast version of ShenMue 2 if you don't want to have English dubbing with the PAL DC version. It's quite a ride because technology in gaming had not gone to where ShenMue was at that point in time. Some of the things Yu Suzuki put in ShenMue are seen elsewhere. It's just easier to do now.

Sony must profit from this situation given the stage time etc. I can't see the 'business sense' in a kind gesture.
