Development tools have gotten a lot better since those days. Some of those tools were just in there infancy back then, now the techniques have been refined and made more efficient.

Now it won't be so massively costly and resource intensive.

There are conflicting numbers. And it's all muddled since the cost of Shenmue II was partially incorporated into that of Shenmue I.

I seem to remember reading that Sega initially said Shenmue I cost $70 million. But then I think that was later corrected and stated that Shenmue I + Shenmue II cost $70 million.

i think the amount they get will be fine for what they intend to make. ultimately this wont be as ambitious for the time as it was on dreamcast. it's not going to be pushing visuals. it's not going to be some massive open world. people keep bringing up costs of the original games like they're even remotely relevant to this comparatively less ambitious project. Those games where cutting edge for the console back then. and i'd imagine it required more time and manpower to achieve what is more easily achieved today. you can knock out a pretty "shenmue quality" town or city in a few days now. back then i'd imagine it was a constant balancing act of artistic vision and hardware constraints. as long as they don't get a head of themselves and keep it relatively low budget, i think we'll be happy with the results.

The difference between the $300 and $500 tier is three extra capsule toys. That's $67 a figure!

Worth it.

I'm glad Shenmue exists but question is, why didn't Sony fund this completely in the first place. I don't like that, I think it stinks.

The original cost like $70M, so someone else is definitely funding the rest, this is just a proof of interest venture in order to convince that publisher to cough up.

Pretty cool, just hope that ports of 1+2 are some of the stretch goals (or better yet planned to release anyways) so I can play them first :)

Why is there no option for a physical PS4 copy? Makes no sense when even small time indie games like Retro City Rampage (2,000 disc print run) manage to get physical releases.

Holy shit. I cannot believe this is actually happening.

Next year's E3 is going to be a massive fucking disappointment compared to this one.

This has pretty much shattered every video game kickstarter record.

Although the Pebble Time still holds the best Kickstarter records. $1 million after less than 30 minutes and $10 million less than 2 days.

Still amazing for Yu Suzuki though. Now if only he'll come out with some Shenmue 1 & 2 HD stretch goal.

I am so happy for you Shenmue fans really, you all deserve this game. I hope the soundtrack will be as memorable as Shenmue 1-2, because that series has maybe the best music I've ever heard in a video game.

Just because Shenmue 1 and 2 cost 47 million in 2000, it doesn't mean Shenmue 3 would cost as much in 2015. The originals were far ahead of their time.

On the Kickstarter page, it say 1&2 are in Segas hands.

Should be done in the next hour easy.

Oki. I'm off to the gym. Looks like I will miss seeing the first milestone being hit in real-time but hey... I'm happy so far!

Sega will run like moths to a flame once they get all the Kickstaters achievement stats.... however, that's me thinking logically and this IS Sega we are talking about.

Sega was going overboard with Shenmue, for example they made actual physical sculpts for many of the in-game characters as part of the modeling process; Suzuki will be smarter with the costs of Shenmue III. Also, Shenmue was initially being developed on the Saturn which probably accounted for a decent chunk of the cost as well.

It was also made in a time when Japanese game designers were treated like rock stars and could demand whatever they wanted. E.g. I once read that the entire English voice cast was auditioned and selected in New York but then flown to Tokyo so that Yu Suzuki could monitor and direct them personally.

What about people who never played shenmue2? I can barely remember what happened in there first one.

They'd be mad not to release HD remakes first, given the game won't be out until at least December 2017. I suspect they don't want to overshadow the kick-starters by announcing it yet. Probably after the kickstarter deadline.

i just want to say i was one of those ppl who would look at the shenmue fans getting their hopes up time after time and i would just smh

let me say, ill bite the bullet. im really happy for all you guys who waited it out for 14 years. i look forward to enjoying the series with you

Christ, this is crazy. Am I dreaming, because I literally can't believe Shenmue 3 is actually happening. It was the Last Guardian before TLG!

Damn...do I back. Probably should back. Yeah, I'm going to back.

Sorry for the late pledge guys. I'm now in. Just popped my $30 down and will do the same again this Friday on pay day.

Now I've gotta grab a copy of Shenmue 2 on Dreamcast quick before the price rockets up to £100.

I know you can polygon-wise and all, but resolution and polycount withstanding, the attention to detail in the enivironments of Shenmue is still almost completely unmatched. Every nook and cranny seems intentional. Just think of ridiculous detail in all the shops you can enter that you'd realistically only spend maybe a minute or two in.
