Iwata tweets about the Digital Event reactions.

I'll never understand why people are so insistent to try and make Nintendo's next console into an X-StationBox. Were you guys really expecting megatons? Do you really expect them to push out huge, generation defining games at the last minute to a console that is all but dead? Come the fuck on... Are we not happy that they show us more of their shit throughout the year than each of the other two combined? You don't think that means E3 will take a hit?

I saw a handful of games that I'm going to buy in that show and I knew all of our Metroid, Galaxy 3 wet dreams weren't happening. I thought the show was decent.

Metroid
Animal Crossing Wii U is a board game that requires amiibo to play
Not at Paper Mario, Paper Mario game
SMT x FE
Fire Emblem IF

Lots of bad stuff was shown.

Was it specifically stated that Animal Crossing Wii U required amiibo to play? Was that explicitly stated because if it was, that's pretty bad.

Also even if SMT x FE and Fire Emblem are not to your liking doesn't mean they are bad.

Development on their new game began in October 2013. The fact that they couldn't even manage to slap together a trailer nearly two years later is a worrying sign. It will be a late 2016 release at the earliest... if the Wii U is even alive by then.

Sony showed games that are likely years away from coming out, but people don't care. They just want to see something substantial.

Their new title probably isn't even a Wii U game.

I thought the presentation was solid. Lots of this E3 was banking on nostalgia and Nintendo took a left turn by doing new thing with IP and it seems to have rubbed people the wrong way. Online co-op in Zelda and Metroid sounds awesome to me. I like playing Nintendo co-op but local play is rarely an option. Star Fox with Platinum? Graphics suck but I'm sure gameplay will rock. Mario & Luigi x Paper Mario? Sick. FE titles in 2016 are an annoying wait but I'm sure they'll be good. Super Mario Maker looking better as things go along. Not interested in Skylanders but the amiibo designs shown were all creative and on point. Wasn't outstanding but lots of good gameplay on display.

Their last title released a year and a half ago. Most studios release games in 2-3 years. You're mad they aren't prematurely announcing something a year out from release?

If it takes 2-3 years to release a game, they must be working on it now. Therefore, letting people know they are indeed working on something, even if it's just a concept, would be a good idea.

I hope Iwata takes the right message away from these poor reactions, because I don't have faith they'll get it right next time.

My thoughts were also that they're shifting development to the NX, but how soon could that possibly come out? They said we wouldn't hear any details about it till 2016, but would they release it that soon? The Wii U was first unveiled at E3 2011 but wasn't released for a year and half later. So if there's a similar timeline, we're not seeing NX till 2017. So what, then, in the meantime?

Nintendo does still have some good stuff coming, but this was their moment to show off something new and unexpected. Honestly, I was half-expecting a Splatoon-like surprise of a new IP or something new and fresh. But it was all rehashes of previously-announced games and most of the new stuff was nothing special.

Tropical Freeze was revealed about six months before its intended launch. I imagine they're gonna do the same thing with whatever their next game is.

After reading those comments I finally put the finger on why that digital event felt so disturbing to me: I felt insulted watching it. They took what I love the most about Nintendo franchises and they made fun of it. They made fun of me.

SE introduced Kingdom hearts with a mobile title, but then moved on to KH3 footage. Sony introduced FF with World of FF, but then moved on to FFVII Remake. Those were scripted emotional events, bringing people's expectations down and then immediately rebounding so much higher.

Nintendo mentioned Star Fox (the lesser offender) and showed the crappiest textures on a WiiU title yet. Then they mentioned Zelda and showed a tiny filler DS title, and stopped there. Then they mentioned Metroid Prime, and showed a tiny filler DS title and stopped there. Then they mentioned WiiU Animal Crossing, and showed a party game with amiibo prereq. And then they mentioned a new WiiU mario game, and showed a tennis filler title.

They never rebounded from those low points. It was just a streak of low points. They took all the franchises people were expecting the most of, and they destroyed every one of them with insignificant filler titles. They didn't promise anything after those. They just showed the lesser version of everything, and then stopped.

I'm a die hard Nintendo fan, but I can't defend that. It feels like a terrible effort at content between 2 cycles. At that point I'm scared they redirected the next Zelda to be a launch title for the next system, along with a proper Metroid.

What makes you think they didnt? All of the rebounds is for next year. Obviously they could've done a better job but how much can you lift up a dead console at this point?

I didn't think it was that bad. Star fox looked cool. I'm interested in the new Mario RPG. Everything else i didn't care to much about. I feel like people are over reacting.

Problem with concept was that multiple times I've seen people pissed off that they show only concept art or cgi trailer. Look at squares presentation. People were pissed about the RPG factory thing.

Nintendo just needs to do their stuff first. After Sony's conference there was no chance in hell of Nintendo making that big an impression.

Every Nintendo fan today..
simpsons-mob-torches.jpg

Hm. Today I learned I am apparently not a Nintendo fan.

Fuck is wrong with you people? We get another Mario & Luigi game (Awesome) and it has Paper Mario characters and mechanics included (awesome). It'll be more of a Paper Mario RPG proper than Sticker Star and most likely be a more focused experience than Dream Team was. It's all lookin good

Day 1

If NX is a console dropping next year it will get slaughtered going against the PS4 and One in their prime.

If it is a handheld dropping next year and has the same Wii U architecture if could possibly get downgraded ports of Wii U titles. But given the rate of Wii U releases this doesn't seem all that likely.

The most conservative idea is that the NX is just a continuation of the dedicated handheld line but with shared architecture that makes it easier for Nintendo to support two platforms. But it could also be something unexpected.

thats what they explicitely did not want to do this year. this means that we will have to wait until the january direct in 2016 since from now on out they will focus on the new releases.

maybe next weeks investor relations conference?

no way it will be next year. 2016 E3 reveal and 2017 holiday release is probably the reasonable guess

5 star comment, that's exactly what it felt, and the contrast with how other companies managed smaller, disappointing announcements into bigger ones was illuminating.

Well if it's coming later into 2016 for Wii U or whatever it wasn't going to be shown here, they said later in 2015, early 2016, we knew this ahead of time.

Hm. Today I learned I am apparently not a Nintendo fan.

Yeah apparently me neither. The things you learn about yourself based on people's opinion on other people's opinions.

It was an okay, treading the water direct during a year that Microsoft and Sony had very strong conferences.

The announcements they made were in line with what I expected, a strong emphasis on already announced games coming out this year and the beginning of next, with one or two new announcements. The biggest problem I had with it was that it was too padded and dragged when it didn't have to be.

I'm more so hoping it's an integration system between the handheld and console similar to the vita and PS. This would allow them to create games easily between the two platforms.

What was worse is not even the content itself, but the farse that was this event, it was all lies, they should not had hyped this so much, they should have been a little honest and skip E3, reserve their game announcements for Directs like they did with Fire Emblem IF and SMT x FE.

E3 actually damages their image, if they cant compete with the other console publishers, (wich is basically the rest of the console industry at this point) then dont do it. they made their digital event fun last year, just announce games through the year and reserve E3 for very special cases like a console.

This was insulting, i know Nintendo is better than this.

If its planned for next year. We would have seen it today.

Yes,

Day 1

Would he preferred a TTYD remaster or just a new Paper Mario in classic style.

Dream Team left such a bad taste in my mouth, and from the short demo during the TreeHouse, this new one has the same level of over-explaining and tutorials.

In theory it's something I want, but for some reason, I just don't want it. I'll stay optimistic.

I find the dev talk stuff fascinating. Am I the only one?

I do but this really isn't the time or place for it. Your E3 conference should be about games and new tech, and that's about it. I really liked the developer segments, but not in the middle of what should be your biggest showing of the year.

Also for the record I loved the puppets.

YOU HEAR ME IWATA?! LOVED. THE. PUPPETS.

And we've had heaps of threads complaining that devs announce games too early. It's fun to get caught up in the hype but people are going to be pissed when it's 2017 and KH3 and FF7R are still not out. It's a lose/lose situation.

Nintendo just needs to do their stuff first. After Sony's conference there was no chance in hell of Nintendo making that big an impression.

In a way, it's a good thing since nothing Nintendo had would've matched up to FF7, TLG and Shenmue 3. That payoff was decades in the making, not even a new console release would be able to be compared favourably.

Nintendo just needs to do their stuff first. After Sony's conference there was no chance in hell of Nintendo making that big an impression.

They made a big impression, just not a good one. Why even bother to compare this to Sony's conference? The Digital Event was disappointing on its own.

But some of the hyperbole getting passed around is ridiculous, and it's a shame to still see these types of reactions be so common in the gaming industry after all these years.

Welcome to the reaction of everyone to Nintendo for the last 2 decades. Even when they have playable games for everyone, it isn't enough, especially when the guys just promise with nothing playable.

At this point I actualy question myself: why do they even need their own console hardware? Without thirdparty support they just end up the same way again.

They make a lot of money from selling the hardware, but I agree. I've said many times that they should NOT go third party, technically - not multiplatform and paying royalties like any other publisher, is what I mean.

What they should do is seek out an exclusive partnership. They could easily get a sweetheart deal with Sony or Microsoft - no license fees in exchange for exclusive games, co-marketing, you name it. Microsoft in particular, at this point, would jump at the chance.

And then, all the issues with slow development and release schedule gaps disappear.

But everyone involved with hardware development is probably out of a job.

This was insulting, i know Nintendo is better than this.

At the same time skipping E3 could hurt them just as much if not more so its a bit of a tricky spot to be in.

my expectations were SOOOO LOW that I thought they did fine.

Not surprised by GAF's reaction, though, holding Nintendo up to some level of standard like "is publishing games I want to play." Because they're nowhere near that bar yet IMO

i agree that they did not deliver on the expectations (OMG Nintendo Direct shortly before E3, Smash direct directly before E3 this means E3 Digital Event will be huge)

....but seriously are you more excited about a remake of an old game then a brand new FF game with a great artstyle?

Nintendo just needs to do their stuff first. After Sony's conference there was no chance in hell of Nintendo making that big an impression.

They threw away their chances when they decided not to show Zelda Wii U and didn't have a big backup (like a Prime 4).

I wasn't really that bothered tbh. People and crazy expectations go hand in hand with Nintendo. They specifically said things releasing up till Q1 2016 is what would be discussed... That was a warning to keep a level head. If they are taking about NX now, even by tease, then the Wii U is taking its last breaths now. That makes me sad but I understand it. No megatons were professed nor to be expected honestly. Just seems like a bunch of hurt feelings for childish reasons.

I could only halfway watch it at work. I don't get all the hate. I knew going in it was mainly about StarFox and Mario Maker and I thought those look great. They said Zelda wouldn't be there. Sure I wish there was a console Metroid but they did pretty much what I expected.

What has everyone up in arms?

My thoughts were also that they're shifting development to the NX, but how soon could that possibly come out? They said we wouldn't hear any details about it till 2016, but would they release it that soon? The Wii U was first unveiled at E3 2011 but wasn't released for a year and half later. So if there's a similar timeline, we're not seeing NX till 2017.

A similar timeline would assure the Nx to bomb like nothing before.

Nx is 2016. Zelda being 99% a Nx launch title is the major proof.

I didn't think it was that bad. Star fox looked cool. I'm interested in the new Mario RPG. Everything else i didn't care to much about. I feel like people are over reacting.

everyone else admittedly had an amazing E3. I think all of the other amazing conferences pretty much set Nintendo up for disappointment. Especially bad as this feels like a slow year for Nintendo as they are retooling internally w/ the mobile development and NX coming soon.

I didn't take it quite so personally, but I agree that this is was another big issue. It's like they kept setting up pins to knock down, but instead of knocking them down, they turned around and pissed on the bowling ball.

Outside of the puppets, the structure of the presentation was disastrous.

Yes,

FE and SMT x FE look bad in general.

If you can seriously say the new FE looks bad then I'm not sure if you've been paying enough attention. Some of the "extra' stuff like base building isn't necessary, but they are making a lot of interesting changes to the core gameplay that show they are taking the evolution of the actual gameplay pretty seriously.

Won't argue with you on SMT X FE, I'm in that boat with you. The one character I thought had a cool design actually got shoved FURTHER back in the only still shot she was in.

I'm not so sure I call chibi Final Fantasy a great art style

On one hand, we complain that publishers show us games waaaaaayyyyy too early, on the other hand, we want Nintendo to start announcing games as soon as they begin development. Also, we act like it would make all the difference if they held all the content we already had until this E3 event. As if that would've changed how we enjoy the actual games.

So we're just dealing with whiny children on Christmas morning who got a dog instead of the pony they wanted? Got it. It all makes sense now.
