Iwata tweets about the Digital Event reactions.

Also, since it seems there's confusion again about NX, I'm going to quote what I said earlier.

Adding also what father_brain said earlier

Ah, almost forgot.

This DE was so "peculiar" (yeah, let's say that way) that, while I stil won't go spelling DOOM everywhere (that's just stupid), I feel the need to see their upcoming non merely gaming initatives. And the first one we're going to witness is the new membership service. Which won't just affect Wii U and 3DS, but NX too. Hell, it'll be one of its core concepts. If they actually nail the membership service well enough, I'll have more faith in the whole NX project being executed correctly. That's what I want to see, absolutely. Call it the "first test".
The membership service is slated for the end of the year, isn't it?

I had a thought/have a theory. What if, the Square Enix conference had a factor in this. There was the scheduling conflict and Square Enix agreed to delay an hour but what if Nintendo had to cut their Digital Event down so that there was no further clash.

As such, we ended up with the random Japanese Nintendo Direct on May 31st (seriously, that came out of nowhere) and its US equivalent on June 1st which contained many other titles including Chibi Robo and Bravely Second and caused them to shift the Earthbound and maybe the Smash stuff to the Sunday rather than having it all in one.

If Nintendo did have the last Direct's stuff and Earthbound/Smash in the Digital Event, then it would have been a solid showing. Not amazing, but definitely solid and would not have got this reaction.

It does sound plausible, especially with the direct kinda just.....ending like it didnt feel complete by the end, and then we got a mario youtube thing.
I know we shouldnt always expect a "one more thing" but it felt like there should have been.

I think they should of consolidated their directs into one. If they're low on content, why space everything out?

The other shows were almost 90 to 120 minutes, why can't the direct be that long?

With Nintendo, "innovation" tends to amount to "pray we can catch lightning in a bottle again." That's not a strategy.

I heard this sort of thing a lot with Vita too, and I think you significantly overestimate the power of moneyhats when it comes to failed platforms. Marketing and even development costs are a lot easier to account for than opportunity cost.

Well here's their opportunity. Get 10 teams on contract today, work-for-hire, get 10 games made for Holiday 2016, market it at E3. No Mario, no Zelda, no other IPs used in the last five years--all fresh, and fresh genres (for Nintendo) too, none of that phone game spinoff crap either, i'm talking like arcade stuff, racers, adventures, shooters, etc. Maybe most or all are budget priced. At least some online multiplayer is a must. Make it fast, make it fun, make it easy to get excited about and play with your friends.

Give this campaign a name, like DC did with New 52 and push it hard. Make it something to be a part of. Like a console launch, but not.

Titles are slightly better than launch quality though, since the hardware is known. The advantage is you get a 'relaunch' and if played right you get something close to the hype of a console launch--but you don't actually launch a new console. You don't blow billions on new hardware released too early, and you don't abandon your existing fanbase.

Zelda still launches as planned, though.

Probably the worst e3 presentation ive seen, worse than Wii Music e3.

Quite offensive how the show was dedicated to 3DS games.

It feels like Nintendo has been a constant state of "please understand" and "we'll do better" mode for the last 3-4 years.

I'd agree except that last year was hands down a pretty good year. Whereas this year its clear that they're taking the Wii U out back but they can't say anything publicly yet so they're left scrambling for content to show

Actually, you know what I'm incredibly surprised we didn't see more of? That Monster Hunter RPG

The membership service is slated for the end of the year, isn't it?
I believe it is, yes. I'm really surprised there were no details about it or any of the mobile titles in the event today, especially with Reggie's talk at the beginning referencing them.

Alot of the content in the directs are things that would have been announced regardless, either because its shares meetings or what have you, majority would have just been said in a PR statement and a youtube video.

Given the meager performance of the Wii U and the 3DS being near its end of life, what would have satisfied you?

Just curious.

I thought the conference sucked to, but that was made obvious to me when Iwata mentioned no Zelda, no NX, no mobile.

I would have been satisfied with Smash Ballot news, more Donkey Kong, a 3D World expansion pack, Diddy Kong Racing 2, Punch-Out!!, a traditional Paper Mario, Mario Strikers, Mario Baseball, or pretty much any Nintendo IP that isn't Mario. Any of those would have made the presentation serviceable for me. Mario Tennis looks like an HD port of Mario Tennis Open, a particularly barebones, underwhelming game that killed my interest in the series. There hasn't been a new Strikers game since 2007, so I was hoping that would next in line. But to be honest, the overabundance of Mario games is getting nauseating, and this is coming from somebody who acknowledges Mario lore.

This.

I just watched the Nintendo digital event and it wasn't bad. No real megatons tho. It just looks like a turd compared to Sony making dreams come true

I still think it was definitely better than Microsoft's, which was a complete snorefest for me. Besides, I bet Persona fans thought the Sony conference was a disappointment.

Not until Nintendo can give me confidence they won't abandon a console this quickly again in the future.

This is what leaves me feeling a bit cheated out, even if the Wii U has been fantastic.

At the very least I expected an exclusive mainline Zelda, Metroid and Animal Crossing.

Yeah, this is where I'm at too.

And it's not just because of the WiiU either.

The Wii had the same problem in it's final years too, all but abandoned first party support wise, passed over for WiiU titles that barely came in the end anyway.

Then there's the 3DS, suffering the same fate. Far fewer third party titles than the DS, and over saturation of the same tired, old titles (the fourth, FOURTH 3DS Zelda title got announced today, for fucks sake!). Hell, they just released the n3DS's! Where are all the titles justifying anyone's purchase of that upgrade?!? Even if not exclusives, show us titles that are going to take advantage of that power boost they seem to think we should pay them large sums of money for!

Nintendo have just proven that you can't trust them to provide long term support (and that's the systems primary/soul source of real content) for their hardware. They're likely pulling both of their systems early, yet we're still seeing barren release schedules during the last 18+ months they'll be on the market for.

This should have been the WiiU and 3DS's swan song announcements. The final farewells and thank you's to the loyal fans that stuck by these systems, and have always, always, believed in Nintendo.

Instead we just got mostly fobbed off with cheap tat and obvious cash grabs.

Monster Hunter RPG
Dragon Quest
Fatal Frame
Rodea
Devils Third

I mean there are content they could show - but they just refuses to. Its unbelievable for me.

Do you think most fans were satisfied? Are you oblivious to how upset many fans seem to be? Not just on GAF, but Twitter, reddit, and various other forums.

On GAF since '99. Most peoples accused me of being a nintendo fanboy throughout the E3s, even though i've owned ps1/ps2/xbox/360 and PC always. But i always had a soft spot for Nintendo's output.

This "fanboy" is giving up ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I supported the gamecube and Wii throughout its life. This is a pathetic upcoming year for gaming on Wii U. Im sure there's a clientele for Skylanders, Disney, Lego, Just dance, Amiibo festival, but it sure aint me.

That's not on Nintendo, though. Capcom actually has to show interest in releasing it abroad. Even now, there's a big question mark on Great Ace Attorney, despite what seemed like solid sales for AA5.

i'm not sure why people keep thinking that a NX release next year would result in an "early" retirement for the wii u.

wii u came out in the fall of 2012, giving it a lifespan of 4 years assuming the NX comes out next fall.

the gameboy advance and original xbox both had 4 year lifespans.

I believe it is, yes. I'm really surprised there were no details about it or any of the mobile titles in the event today, especially with Reggie's talk at the beginning referencing them.
Nintendo said that they weren't going to talk about mobile at E3. We'll probably start getting details soon though since they are suppose to start releasing in the Fall.

On paper this probably looked like a good e3 for Nintendo.

-Star Fox Wii U
-Animal Crossing Wii U
-SMTxFE Wii U
-New Mario Tennis Wii U
-Xenoblade Wii U
-New Zelda 3DS
-New Metroid 3DS
-Paper Mario 3DS
-Fire Emblem 3DS
-Yokai Watch

Unfortunately we either already knew about most or they weren't what gamers were wanting from those franchises.

The fact that this console won't have a *****CONSOLE-EXCLUSIVE***** mainline Zelda is mind-blowing to me. What a flop. Kind of a bummer Sm4sh, Splatoon, W101, and other awesome games were pushed on it. I mean, the next Nintendo console will probably be backward compatible, so if it somehow takes off at least people will have a chance to play the good stuff.

They need more development teams, western and japanese, thats for sure.
Its more important than ever now that the big 3rd parties will never work with them.

They have been expanding like crazy though right? Like, the issue isn't lack of games, there were lots of games at this conference. Its just that nothing new was announced that anyone cared about besides that Mario RPG

Seriously, why did Animal Crossing Party and that Animal Crossing house decorator get so much time?

This is not a fact. All this is emotion-fueled speculation.

edit:

Actually, Gamespot has an article in which Miyamoto reconfirms Zelda for Wii U.

The membership service is slated for the end of the year, isn't it?

Back from March's Dena announcement

Nintendo and DeNA also plan to develop an online membership service that is accessible from smart devices, PC and Nintendo systems, such as the Nintendo 3DS portable system and the Wii U home console. The membership service, which is targeted to launch in the fall of 2015, will be built on DeNA's extensive experience and capabilities in online membership services.

Also, from May's investor meeting Q&A

As you pointed out, this project has neither been widely reported nor covered, and although it might not have captured a lot of media attention yet, I believe this is going to be a very important challenge for us. The better the system can operate, the more smoothly and frequently our consumers will be able to travel between smart devices and dedicated game systems. It will increase the number of reasons for our consumers to keep on playing games or to keep on playing with their friends and relatives, increase the opportunities where one can recommend some games to others and vice versa or where people can exchange game-related information. Today, the speed at which information can spread is extremely fast. Anything that experiences a boom in today's world is almost always riding on the wave of this information spread, so we have to construct a system which matches today's environment. In the past, TV ads and word of mouth might have been the main components of that system, but today, people argue how we should add the Internet to a system and how we should combine these efforts with smart devices, and we are aiming to construct such kind of comprehensive system. So far, we have been offering a loyalty program in which we offer corresponding points to those who have purchased our products, and we have been offering some rewards based on these points. What we are aiming to establish is not a simple extension of the existing loyalty program but a loyalty program with, say, the entertainment elements where the members feel that they have received certain rewards as a result of not only their purchases but also the history of their gameplay and how each consumer has interacted with others. Since it is impossible to define the requirements for this sort of loyalty program 100 percent in advance, we see it very advantageous that we are able to work with DeNA who will be able to flexibly deal with such requirements. We have not decided if the next meeting with you will be a Financial Results Briefing or a Corporate Management Policy Briefing, but around the end of October this year, we will probably have the next opportunity to communicate with you. We will prepare for that so we will be able to disclose more concrete information at that time.

I suppose this means that, around November, it'll be launched. Beginning of November: first details at the investor meeting, announcement alongside the investor meeting, official launch a few days later.

Right? I was expecting a Pokken Wii U announcement. Maybe that's moved to NX as well. Every console needs a fighter at launch...

Announcing a console release now would piss off arcade owners. Its probably going to be handled in the same fashion as Tekken with a release being announced next year.

But it will have a mainline Zelda?

People are over reacting.

This happens with Nintendo a lot. Last year they went too far into this years games with their announcements.

Imagine if Mario Maker, Yoshi, and Zelda were all new announcements this year. They are still on the horizon afterall. Everyone would be satisfied I think. But because theyve already been shown, people are dissapointed.

People want suprise and excitement, but I think Nintendo's line up is solid. Mario Maker alone makes me happy I own a Wii U right now.

Quite true.

If the New Nintendo Hardware comes out in Fall 2016 then that's a 4-year lifespan. Yeah, it's one year less than the typical 5-year span. But considering the console's clearly diminishing returns, I don't see it being a problem for me.

Right? I was expecting a Pokken Wii U announcement. Maybe that's moved to NX as well. Every console needs a fighter at launch...

This year's Dolan pic is "Everything was Platinum."
Next year's is "Everything was NX."

By the way I think we'll hear about their first mobile game at the investor's meeting next week. I think Nintendogs would be a good IP to try.

This "they moved everything to NX" talk is reminding me of pre Wii U when there was nothing coming out for the Wii and everybody assumed it was because they were saving everything for the Wii U launch.

Then came E3 2012.

Totally. I shared my opinion of it, and people started accusing me of dismissing their opinions.

given that the next console will likely move away from the powerpc architecture, i'm not sure why you're confident it will be backwards compatible

two most likely architectures at this point are ARM or x86/AMD based chip

That would makes sense given that Konno is handling the mobile stuff.

In that case a lot of Nintendo was probably working on 3DS titles and saving it after the initial issues.

Maybe I worded that wrong. I'll reword it. I'm just theorising that it could be the reason for the random Direct we had and the belief that the contents of that Direct would have improved the Digital Event but would have caused another schedule conflict.

Just a theory anyway. The random Direct came from nowhere and had reveals that could have easily been in this and improved the general quality of it.

That's a bit crazy.

They didn't cut anything from this direct. It is,by the looks of all the youtube videos on nintendos channel, already the longest direct nintendo has ever done.
There's no way they cut content out of it to please square enix.

Think about the next gen, and what will happen to Nintendo once the competition gets their consoles out 2+ years later. Nintendo will be in the same situation again.

Whooaaa, now that's just being silly. If it wasn't for 2003, 2008 would be the worst.

Didn't 2008 have the reveal of Animal Crossing for Wii and the announcement of Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars? I think they also might've revealed Wii Sports Resort? Not necessarily a good thing I guess.
There was also a lot of bragging/sales talk, maybe ten minutes of Wii Music awkwardness and some footage/announcement of (bad) 3rd party games. Worse than today? Maybe.

Pretty much. Although it might be different this time if we assume NX is a single platform akin to iOS.

Yoshi comes out in a week in Europe. It's only on the "horizon" because NoA delayed it to pad their release schedule since there's nothing else coming out. Stop telling other people how to feel.
