Metal Gear Solid V E3 2015 Trailer

"America is a country of liberty. A meeting of immigrants. Instead of simply assimilating its citizens live alongside others"

He's defining multiculturalism. I think using America as an example here is erroneous.

Bit of a weak trailer in my opinion. Weakest of the Kojima cuts. I'm also very much at the stage where I feel I've seen maybe too much and just want to play already. I'm good to go.

I dunno man, looks like he put a lot of work into this one. Dat music editing

Notice how he times the momentum of the song with the konami logo, and also when big boss starts shooting at the end

Damn good. This and the hitman trailer are leagues above the rest at e3 imo

Plus I think this is the best song he's used too

That's a great fucking post. I love your line of thinking!

However, there are a couple of things in GZ that I think undermine Skullface literally being Big Boss (outside of the impossible situations and voice recordings). I don't think it necessarily affects your overall point, but they do suggest that Skullface is real at some point:

1) A number of guards make reference to the Black Ops team. One pair reference Skullface directly, mentioning his "sawed off lever-action rifle". It could be a red herring, it could be a weapon Big Boss adopts in his Skullface persona, but to me It suggests the foreshadowing of an Ocelot/Olga style boss battle at some point in TPP which could lead to his death.

2) Chico is a pretty compelling argument on his own. Skullface speaks to him in Big Boss-isms and he is initially scared when Big Boss himself comes to rescue him.

However, Prisoner 12282 has a very similar experience to Chico (Big Boss-isms) and isn't scared when rescued. He even says he saw Skullface's face, although he can't remember it. This could support the Skullface is Big Boss theory, if it weren't for the fact that he recognises and clearly remembers Big Boss when rescued, which seems a little incongruous, if not quite damning.

I think Skullface quoting Big Boss has more to it than him literally being Big Boss. As a character aware of the power of language, using Big Boss' words as weapons is a way of taking on his aspect. I'm not quite sure what this suggests at this point, but literally being him seems almost crass considering the lofty concepts Kojima is throwing about.

3) Paz isn't scared of Big Boss when he rescues her either, and she arguably spent the most time with Skullface. Tellingly, the post-credit sting has this exchange:

Paz: This will save Big Boss?
Skull Face: It may.

The post-credit sting, as it has always been, is not from the main characters perspective and is something they often aren't aware of. They are specifically for the player, acting as a reversal or dramatic irony. If Paz was faced with Big Boss as Skullface, her asking this question becomes problematic.

Like I say, none of this is hard and fast, just my interpretation of events. I do believe that Big Boss will be haunted by a Skullface hallucination (amongst others), but the above (along with the impossible situations and voice recordings, which are hard to ignore) is why I believe he has to be real at some point rather than entirely a figment of BB's psychosis/split personality.

Well you're probably right, and I should really listen to all of those tapes and dialogues from GZ. Some of the points you've mentioned could still be interpreted both ways but yeah, stuff like Paz and Skull Face talking about Big Boss like he's not there is a pretty cliche way of handling things, but it's also very Japanese, or anime style I should say so I don't know, I'm still on the fence. It's just that Skull Face literally looks like an anthropomorphic snake with a phantom mask, and is a "ghost", he's definitely there to mess with the player's head. His whole history is interesting though, it's extremely detailed so if he is a figment of Big Boss' imagination he would have to be constructed from bits and pieces of his mind, something he's somewhat familiar with. It could even be a story he's been listening while in a coma (if he ever was in a coma, #goteamsolidus), from someone in the hospital, a patient, Ishmael or whatever. Or you know, he could just be a different person. :)

It's interesting that Ocelot describes some of the backstory and goals of Skull Face. He's in on it, I tells ya. I'm wondering if Big Boss has been fucked up from the very start, the damage to his mind has been done a long time ago (shortly pre GZ or during the coma) so the hallucinations and his entire traumatic struggle is therapy guided by Ocelot to bring back Big Boss, or who he needs to become.

It would be very interesting if we see a lot of mindfuckery happen to Big Boss during the game, but then see Kojima turn towards the player and see everyone (except Big Boss probably) start acting as if in a stage play or a movie, in a Neverending Story sort of fourth wall breaking way.

Anyway, yeah, it feels to me like Kojima will be extremely cruel to Big Boss and drag him through hell. I wonder how much that need for transformation from noble leader to villain will harm the overall image of the character, if he indeed starts pulling off a lot of switcheroo mindfuck stunts. But also, if there will be a lot of this warped narrative stuff I mentioned earlier, the logical details and intricacies in the story will have to suffer, so who knows.

That 2nd video shows skull face interacting with octacons dad so that theory is dead

Well yeah, it just shows the two of them (we don't know what else is going on in there). The player sees Skull Face. Huey might be seeing a Big Boss with a mask, wondering what the fuck happened to this once brave charismatic man. :)

Just noticed something interesting

Miller lacks pupils for a split second (2:00)

When BB pulls the headphone out of the guys throat, he also has no pupils (2:34)

What does it all mean Basil?

Miller is blind.

Lol, two years of thinking he'd just been punched in the face really hard.

Is this still coming out September 15th for PC? I remember them saying that back in March, not sure if still true.

I hope Miller does something to really piss off Liquid, not that Liquid needs any more justification for killing Miller than simply tricking Solid but it would be funny.

So it turns out that MG Rex was not a new model in MGS (PS1)? Repurposing old technology with a nuclear warhead and some extra gadgets... boo!

Wait a minute.

Parapsychology is a pseudoscience concerned with the investigation of paranormal and psychic phenomena. Parapsychologists study telepathy, precognition, clairvoyance, psychokinesis, near-death experiences, reincarnation, apparitional experiences, and other paranormal claims.[1]

Parapsychology research is largely conducted by private institutions in several different countries and funded through private donations,[2][3][4][5] and the subject rarely appears in mainstream science journals. Most papers about parapsychology are published in a small number of niche journals.

Oh shit...

This trailer was so -absolutely- fantastic, best thing that came out of this E3.
In fact this trailer IS E3 2015 to me, not even FF7r.

I think it didn't really appeal to many who weren't big MGS fans already. Sort of a weird trailer. Not to mention the bombs dropped by Sony (TLG, Shenmue, FF7r)

Well. It's real simple. Let's take your FF7r example.

That small little trailer spoke huge. HUGE volumes over what MGSV was trying to do. What did we get with MGSV? Bullshit. And by bullshit, I mean, things that make absolutely no sense. And it hit so hard with nostalgia.

I'm so ready for MGSV. But between these two franchises, FF is king.

Ok, I think I figured it out after watching the trailer several times. Alright

A)You know that scene in last year's trailer where Big Boss is seen walking through a village, what if he never went to that village, and was hallucinating? Seemingly he or someone else kills Skullface which screws him up in the head for an unknown reason. That much his obvious. Big Boss is also in the same pose that he's in when he screams at the end of last year's trailer. So maybe he kills his own troops and only then realizes that he's killed his own men. Either way, I think Big Boss is the guy who does it.

B)I also think Eli(Liquid) will find out that he's a clone, and go crazy, which is why he takes control of the metal gear and tries to attack big boss. Naturally, since it's a clone, Big Boss will kill Eli and take it back to his base, hence the scene at the end where everyone is staring at the Metal Gear while Boss is looking away, unknown whether or not big boss realizes that Eli is a clone or not.

Just my theory. :|

Not sure if anyone has said this yet...

At the 2:00 mark. Is this voice Zero? I personally think it is, since it definitely gels with his plans regarding The Patriot AI system.

It is funny that "Chains of Retaliation" are mentioned in this trailer. One might say that this very line is the central theme behind Metal Gear: A system of retaliation for the world to thrive on. Here you have Skull Face, who is retaliating against the ideas that both Naked and Zero have set in their minds for the world, which has resulted from both of them trying to find some justice for how the world screwed The Boss over. Then from all of this you have Liquid, Solid, and Solidus caught up in their own drama, ultimately leaving Solid to put an end to things for good. When all is said and done, I guess you can see the justification in Ocelot's admiration for Solid by the end of MGS4, since he is the only one who has enough sense and will to finally achieve what The Boss wanted for Naked and Zero once they finally had the power to control the world: Leave it alone. Don't try to control it.

This trailer is pretty effective at showing just how effective a capstone this game will be for the series on a thematic level, IMO. Kojima really kind of gave everyone what they wanted in the end, I think. MGS4 gives fans some nice moments. You can tell that game resulted from pandering to the negative feedback his team had regarding his original vision for MGS4's ending: Where Solid and Otacon are executed as war criminals. MGSV is pretty much the OG ending, since it's an execution of Naked's sanity, leading to the mad man he allegedly is by the time Solid puts his ass down, thus making the chain of retaliation complete. I guess that could be the meaning behind "V Has Come To".

Yeah, there's no doubt about it. Apart from the british accent and the monologue fitting with his overall goals, in the japanese version of the trailer it's literally the same voice actor that did his voice in MGS3.

Searching for "leningrad university of parapsychology" a name pops up a few times: Vasiliev, Leonid Leonidovich, who, it seems, made experiments about telepathy, mental suggestion and hypnosis...

Could it be related? :)

Both Russia and America invested quite heavily into parapsychology, remote viewing, telepathy and mind control techniques (MKULTRA) during the Cold War.

Watched it again, dont know. It deflated my hype for the game. Will we get some gameplay demo's? Story looks like a mess.

I find it baffling that there's always people who come in MGS threads and say things like "story looks a mess" "story is confusing" etc. No shit, the game is not out yet LOL. If you don't understand the MGS story up to date because you didn't play a game(or any at all) then again, no shit lol.

Really? He seemed like he was at least 30 in MGS3, I'd wager 32. Which suggests he would be 52. I suppose it's not that far off. How do we know exactly?

Still seems ridiculous he'd be mid-70s or even 80 in MGS4. Ridiculous that he'd live that long.
