Iwata tweets about the Digital Event reactions.

Just watched the full thing. As expected but Animal Crossing Board Game was a great fucking surprise. People need to accept a main Animal Crossing game is not coming to Wii U. Its a portable title now.

Other than that nothing of great surprise, more of what we've seen and more or less looking alright. New announcements like Zelda and Metroid fell flat.

Lets not be ridiculous here, there is no point in trying to blame outside forces for the way this has Event crashed and burned (like blaming Sony killing it with their presentation or Square Enix).

The simple fact remains that people didn't want what Nintendo was presenting in the Digital Event. They didn't want a four (three?) swords inspired Zelda spin off title at E3, they didn't want an amiibo focused Animal Crossing game for the Wii U at E3, they didn't want a Metroid spin off at E3 nor did they want a Star Fox that has "primitive" graphics when compared to the titles shown yesterday at E3. There is no doubt that these games will be fun to play, but presenting them at an event as big as E3 was careless and inappropriate and has now damaged the relationship with their core base.

What the core wanted was more info on Zelda Wii U, what they wanted was a proper Wii U Animal Crossing game like City Folk, what they wanted was F-Zero, what they wanted was a full Metroid title and not a spin off. Nintendo didn't offer that but instead presented spin off titles to said franchises. It's as simple as that, the core base wanted titles Nintendo didn't present and they are understandably upset at what is being offered, as is their right as a consumer of Nintendo products.

I watched the Digital Event going in with 0 expectations because frankly this is what I predicted would happen. Nintendo messed up really badly with the Wii U and it's gimmick and it's showing in the abandonment of 3rd parties and the constant delays. The Wii U eShop is abysmal and content is not being delivered at a rate the base would like (which comes as a consequence of trying to support two platforms with different architecture).

Nintendo shouldn't go 3rd party but they really need to change how they approach their hardware platforms and pleasing whatever base is left after today. It not only does the NX need to be more developer friendly like the PS4 but it needs to be simple. Nobody gives a fuck about the damn gamepad or it's second screen, most of the games on the platform can function just fine without it. People are perfectly fine gaming with something like the Pro Controller.

People say "Well Nintendo tried going the traditional route and it didn't work" but that isn't entirely correct. Since the N64 there has been constant roadblocks for developers to get their games onto the platform that it simply isn't worth investing extra money to support their platforms. Motion, Cartridges, Mini CD discs all hurt the consoles chances at coming back. Motion did prove to be a success for them, but now people have moved onto mobile. They are not going to buy a dedicated console with another gimmick when they can game on a mobile phone. The core won't mind if the Pro Controller is the standard used, just so long as you deliver on great content exclusive to that platform.

Not catering to the core left on your Wii U platform backfired epically today, so Iwata really needs to LISTEN and learn from this, but I don't expect them to. I expect the same mistakes that landed them in the shit.

Spot on.

There's was just nothing to get excited for at their conference. It was a disappointment. Out of everything shown, I think the only thing that piqued my interest was Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam and Xenoblade's release date. Of course Yoshi and Fire Emblem Fates looks great, but they were already announced and have had quite a lot of footage shown. (I could care less about Star Fox).

Fire Emblem Fates, #FE, Star Fox, Paper Mario/Mario & Luigi, Super Mario Maker, Xenoblade Chronicles X, Yoshi's Wolly World. I didn't realize that I had to like the "right" Nintendo games. Please tell me, is Style Savvy a game I'm allowed to like or must I turn my hands away from the filth that isn't a core Nintendo game?

...and it still was released on GameCube too. I don't think you're presenting some controversial theory here.

I never implied I was. In my original post I said how it was delayed to also be a launch title - as in releasing on the Gamecube as well. Yeah, it may release on the Wii U. But chances are they've delayed it to make the most of the NX. That's what I'm 'presenting'.

The most a Zelda game sold was 7.6 million that was Ocarina of Time. So yes i think they would.

Yeah, and that was on a console that ended up doing 32 million by the end of it's life. Ocarina was also released 2 years after the system released, when the 64 still had a healthy life ahead of it. Why would they release the game on a console that has sold a fraction of that?

I'm still surprised people were expecting a new full title this year, especially after HHD was announced.

Animal Crossing Wii U is very likely a 2016 announcement. New Leaf just isn't that old.

360 was plagued with hardware issues/RROD.

Also, that was one year, and the Wii was...special.

This is two or more. NX in 2016 means it'll be out at least two years ahead of the others. Xbox One and PS4 were out in 2013, and they sure as hell won't be replaced before five years are up. But Wii U would be replaced after 4 years, according to this scenario.

Late 2017 is more acceptable and closer to the 360 situation, but I still find it troubling.

nintendo can't afford to concern themselves with what microsoft and sony are doing. they currently have two systems that are floundering.

there's just no way they let these systems persist for another 2+ years before releasing another console. i just can't see it, especially after the lack of big content shown today.

And I still saw Fire Emblem Fates, #FE, Star Fox, Paper Mario/Mario & Luigi, Super Mario Maker, Xenoblade Chronicles X, Yoshi's Wolly World, Yokai Watch, and Pokemon Mystery Dungeon. Clearly, one game based completely out of Amiibos means that ALL games are just about Amiibos.

And I loved Sony's conference. It was one of the best hands down. But it is so easy to make any things seem bad when you twist a word. I just showed you how.

The problem with this list is that everything was announced and has been shown repeatedly outside of Mario & Luigi.

I guess I won't see anything of interest for the next year from Nintendo, until NX is properly announce for whatever it is. Well, see you guys/gals next year. Highly doubt that Nintendo will be able to catch my attention for a loooong time again.

Well it's not as bad as when Nintendo use to be at e3.

That tool Reggie would come out and say something like "nintendo has great 3rd party support" and the big reveal would be hanna montana racing or something. Nintendo does not live in reality.

I wonder if some people really do think this was worse then E3 fucking 2008, the E3 thats only claim to fame was Animal Crossing City folk and Wii Sports resorts (and Wii music but nobody wants to remember that)

This E3 was a bit underwhelming but it's not the worst E3 from Nintendo I've seen.

Star Fox Zero got me so hyped. Fire Emblem and #FE look fantastic as well. The rest aside from XCX and Yoshi didn't interest me at all

Animal Crossing Wii U is very likely a 2016 announcement. New Leaf just isn't that old.

More like they morphed a proper Animal Crossing Wii U game into this board game because Wii U isn't selling and they want to save that franchise a bit for NX. Make it more of a special occasion.

At least there was a real Animal Crossing game there... That's all I cared about that year. I was super excited.

In the end this E3 was not that terrible. They have solid games for the fall and Mario Maker looks rad. But man, I am admittedly salty as hell over that animal crossing troll. Who the hell wants that game? Why would they even put it out if it wasn't to take advantage of Amiibos. I was excited to see an animal crossing on hardware more capable than the original (gcn, Wii, and 3ds are very similar) especially after how beautiful those Mario Kart assets were. But what Nintendo is giving us is a damn joke.

Wasn't there also the announcement of GTA Chinatown Wars? I think also some 3rd party footage that wasn't horrible (e.g. Shaun White Snowboarding)?

People really need to stop blaming Sony. I for one don't care about Final Fantasy, Uncharted, TLG and especially Shenmue - just like I'm not interested in any of the new Nintendo games shown today. It was a very underwhelming event, really.

Next year? Did we suddenly forget Directs exist? This isn't the only time Nintendo reveals things. If anything Nintendo's mistake was having that recent Direct where they showed some games like the FExSMT crossover. Should have saved that for E3.

Star Fox, Mario and Luigi, online Zelda, solid release dates for Mario Maker and Xenoblade... this digital event got me hyped. Animal Crossing made me suoer sad but that Metroid spinoff actually looks insanely fun.

Sony > Nintendo > MS for me this year.

The problem with this list is that everything was announced and has been shown repeatedly outside of Mario & Luigi.

I'm not saying YOU had to like it. I'm saying that you going around like no one liked it and that you somehow represent the "true" Nintendo crowd insults me much more than any "poor" direct. I saw things I enjoyed like I did with Sony and Bethseda.

I'm not trying to attack you. You're getting too emotional about this conference. It was disappointing because all of these games have been shown and demoed extensively. I was extremely excited for the new Fire Emblems when they showed the original trailers months ago, but when you show another trailer that has no context about what the game is... Wooo.... I was excited about Mario Maker, Yoshi, and Xenoblade 2 years ago... Now after multiple years of continuing to show them off, I just want them released.

I still maintain that I loved this event. The whole thing outside of SMT X FE was really fun to watch. Ever since the Wii U came out, Nintendo have announced things that have then lingered around for a while in purgatory before releasing and I feel that Nintendo this year wanted to just get all of that shit locked down and out. Focusing on the immediate releases, things coming out within the next 12 months, and you know what? I'm perfectly happy with that. Release date for Xeno? Hell yeah. Super Mario Maker out September? Perfect! Star Fox this holiday? Nice! I do believe that we'll see more for the Wii U even next year, especially Captain Toad types of experiences, and maybe Metroid and such.

I feel that in the end, Nintendo have done well by the Wii U considering it was dead on arrival and people expected Nintendo to drop it asap. They've released some amazing titles on the system, hitting most of the main franchises from 2D and 3D Mario to DK, Pikmin, Kart and Smash, with most of these being the best in their respective franchise, or near the top. I would have liked experimental things like Endless Ocean and a HD Metroid, but right now, right here, Nintendo could do with surefire hits instead of experimental titles that may not do well at all. Consistent with the awesome visuals, beautiful music and games that just work out of the box, Nintendo have done a great job. E3 this year was all about locking down and tying all of the loose ends, keeping everything lean and focused. It also helps that Super Mario Maker is the best thing at E3 by a country mile, looks stunning and I was very skeptical last year. No big surprises at E3, but it was a very nice, warm, fun event.

They have been expanding like crazy though right? Like, the issue isn't lack of games, there were lots of games at this conference. Its just that nothing new was announced that anyone cared about besides that Mario RPG

Seriously, why did Animal Crossing Party and that Animal Crossing house decorator get so much time?

Its a sum of bad ideas this year and nothing new to show (repeats of yarn, when it has been already showed 100 times in the past moths, was a horrible thing to do). And they have nothing to show probably becuase of the NX (whatever is that) and that they are clearly dong a transition, and becuase they have teams that make games for 2-3 years, and wouldnt be a problem if you have a bunch of other teams that had already released games that year, and others that are working for some more years, so you never have a clear draught of new games to show at your conferences.
It may also be clever to not do so many fucking directs during the year andso you can show more "surprises" during E3 (becuase its a better marketing tool). Have 2 directs for each console each year, add e3's digital event, and then have smaller directs about 1 game a month before it releases or to show new dlc for that game.

Also dev stories need to go out of the digital events. Yarn and Zelda were the only horrible things they did similar last year and people already didnt give a shit, and know they put a bunch of them and make it really worse (was the yarn segment reall needed again?). The time for those is perfect during treehouse, not the digital events if you are going to make them less than 1 hour long.
And about the puppets, even if the start was incredibly great, they were horribly misused and thats was another thing that was done better last year. They were actual jokes done by robot chicken. This year they were 10 second scenes that looked more like they were trolling the fanbase with the shit they were attached minute after minute than cute things to make the thing entertaining.

I don't know how Wii U can last until 2017-2018, but I think abandoning it early is a mistake. I think they need to somehow align their console cycle with the other two console makers. Otherwise I just see the same thing happening.

I'm not saying no one liked it. I'm saying it was disappointing. I felt underwhelmed, and that's the consensus of a lot of people. I'm not speaking for anyone else in my statement of the conference being a disappointment.

If only. This has been the pattern for Nintendo consoles since the N64. They haven't properly supported the back half of a console's life since the SNES.

Take the N64, for example. You know how many games Nintendo released for it in 2001, while waiting for the Gamecube launch? Two. And that's counting a Rare game, Conker's Bad Fur Day. The only one Nintendo did themselves was Dr. Mario 64.

And third parties didn't exactly fill the gap: 8 games were released all year (in NA, Japan got a couple more, EU got 3 total).

Man, the precipitous drop in releases at the tail end of every Nintendo console really fucks with me sometimes. I keep forgetting just how barren things can get mostly because at that time I've either plunked down with an evergreen or have other things playing/doing. It really hasn't done them any good over the years. It's strange to think that with how things are playing out now, the large majority of Nintendo's shortcomings could all come down on them hard as they transition versus when they were trying to find a foothold.

do you feel that the gamepad is worth revisiting for the successor?

I do, just for backward compatibility alone. There are tons of Wii U gems that will otherwise be forgotten forever with no way to play them. Plus, my hunch is the new NX portable is actually going to double as a gamepad anyway.

If they actually do what they said they were going to do and treat their hardware like Apple treats theirs, they won't have to worry about it. They'll hypothetically be able to release a "New 3DS-esque" upgrade in hardware that's natively backwards compatible and yet comes with a noticeable bump in graphical output, and they'll be able to release these upgrades in much shorter intervals than a normal hardware generation. All with no hindrance on the software teams.

If this system were in place today, we would have seen Zelda, EAD Tokyo's next game, and Retro's next game in the Direct.

I think the reason we aren't getting a Wii U Animal Crossing is because it's going to be one of the mobile games this fall.

I'm deciding whether or not to buy a Wii U this year, or wait until the NX is announced and hope for backwards compatibility. Either way I would probably buy Xenoblade this year in fear of it skyrocketing in price, and if no backwards compatibility is announced for the NX, then I'll go out and buy a Wii U.... I think that sounds like a plan.

EDIT: Unless there's a really good Holiday Deal... or unless I can't stand the wait to play Xenoblade.

I hope so. It's still the best controller ever made. Make it a bit more comfortable, add battery life and a better screen and it's insanely good.

While I like the gamepad, I wouldn't call it the best controller ever made...plus listing fixes next to that statement doesn't make it sound like it's the best.

I'm hoping the NX is a Hybrid Console with the Handheld acting as a gamepad.

Today's presentation wasn't brilliant like last year, but Iwata didn't need to apologise. That's a bit over-the-top.

I can forgive Nintendo for a disappointing E3, when we already know the Wii U and 3Ds are beginning to wind down and they're working on a replacement, and we already know almost all the games they've got coming for the rest of the year.

It's not the end of the world. Nobody knocks it out the park every time.

Yeah this is how I feel, Through I don't think the NX is going to replace BOTH systems in one fell swoop,

do you feel that the gamepad is worth revisiting for the successor?

Yes, but they have to be able to cut the cost drastically without compromizing the quality. It shouldn't hold back the hardware inside the console due to cost (or not to the same extend as with WiiU).
It would also be cheaper to replace for the poor people who accidentally broke their controller.
lol
