My example above of Hearthstone forces you into offline play first before you get online access. Its popularity is through the roof.
If a fighter required you to do a tutorial mode of sorts, and a few trials with a character of your choice before online play it would probably LOWER the amount of people dropping games as fast.
Easing players into shit is a great idea.
And if the company is smart, and say you think you got this and that this tutorial/trial stuff is beneath you because maybe you played the beta, or did a ton of research online before getting the game, or bought the game on a different console, then : give them the option to skip it via "proving it" quick. Fight the computer on say Hard mode, or do these separate trials so it knows you aren't full of shit.
