Xbox One adds Xbox 360 backwards compatibility

I'm a bit disappointed that it needs to download the 500 meg emulator or whatever for every game. It quickly inflates the size of these once tiny arcade games.

They even have Store pages for 360 games already set up. You can Pin, Rate, view description, see who's streaming that game on Twitch, view some screenshots, and the dev info, too. Also, when you're watching someone stream the game in the Twitch app, if you own the game, you can click Play from within the app and it takes you to the game :)

It's perfectly integrated as if it were always there. :D

Yes, this sounds great. I hope this continues into the next-gen of consoles.. It would be amazing.

looked at my xbox web page downloads list

Bully Scholarship Ed.

damn i completely forgot about this game! only played 2hrs of it but stopped playing for some reason. guess i gotta vote to get this ready for BC. Hopefully R* allows it

thank you!

Meanwhile, try this.

Interested to hear if this works for anyone else that isn't in the preview program (and apologies if it has been reported, haven't seen it anywhere yet).

Note: I've asked for an invite in the preview thread, but haven't yet received a message or app to join the xbox one preview program.

I was able to access the BC 360 games on my Xbox One by doing the following:

1. Find a user who has played a BC 360 game on their XB1 (Major Nelson has Mass Effect in his list for example).
2. Make sure you are following them as a friend.
3. Go to your Friends tab on the xbox one dash and go to the 'Popular with friends' section
4. Find the 360 game and click into it
5. You should then have view in store, install etc options

This has worked for me for Hexic HD, Perfect Dark and Mass Effect (all digitally purchased previously)

I wonder what else Spencer has in store for us?

He's changed so many things since taking the helm last year, all great great things.

The same is true for the Wii and Wii U VC games, NES games are 40MB? I get it, but at the same time, damn.

Yeah, I don't know if there's some way to make it so that you boot into an emulated environment first and then play your games... but I suppose they would also lose out on all the Xbox One features.

It's just silly to download 600 megs to play Geometry Wars or Super Meat Boy.

I'm hoping they find a solution for that by the time this goes public.

So I'm not in the beta but got Geometry Wars via the friend method. Game doesn't seem to wanna load. It just keeps "Getting my Xbox 360 info" and either goes back to the dad or spins forever.

It took a few minutes for me. Once it downloaded my entire profile it seemed to work perfectly.

The xbox one dash was updated days before E3 for those in testing so you are most likely missing data needed in the OS for something.

If so, that would confirm that games that didn't get a digital release are still possible.

It's a shame it didn't get a digital release.. They'll probably release it digitally once it's announced to be back compatible.. No point in not having this convenience, specially for Ubi who (like EA) hasn't released (any?) remasters.

Yeah, it's a shame he wasn't in his current position while planning the console.

"Gamers are gonna love it when they realize they never have to put discs in to play games anymore! At least, that's what everyone who uses the install feature on the Xbox 360 keeps telling me!" (c) Phil Spencer in 2011-2013

"It's gonna be pretty sweet when we tell gamers that they can have discless play on their Xbox One, yet still be able to trade in those games, unlike Steamworks Retail discs! Unprecendented! And related to that, they can even transfer digital licenses to other people, which is also pretty new! This'll definitely give us more flexibility with publishers to do other digital features! Gonna be awesome!" (c) Phil Spencer in 2011-2013

"Yeah it sucks about the 24hr thing, but our users have shown that they frequently play online games and use streaming apps all the time, so it won't be that big of a deal, right? Ok, let's go announce this thing. Aww man, can't wait!" (c) Phil Spencer in 2013.

made up quotes obviously, but hindsight is 20/20

And then he's replaced by Mattrick... who everyone loves.

Heh... Put that way it sounds pretty good. There were a number of features there that were good - their messaging and executive PR speak was piss poor though and a complete disaster for them.

Streaming Viva Piñata to my tablet right now. So cool.

Also, this game is so cute. Pretty, too. Love the piñata "fur", lighting, grass and water effects.

Have any of you tried the Mass Effect Trilogy disc for Mass Effect 1 with success?

This is irrelevant because the games are done with the publisher's consent.

May not be that irrelevant though. Some of these games are published by Microsoft itself, and in other cases maybe will lead to a communication between MS and the publisher to try make it happen.

When you insert an old disc, then the xbox downloads the 360 game.

Does this mean you can play even when the disc isn't in the drive? Or is it like Xbox One games where the disc has to be in the drive to play?
