SHENMUE 3 kickstarter (PC/PS4) - FINAL DAY - NEW KS RECORD GO GO GO!

I don't think I will buy the game if it wont allow me to engross myself in the world Shenmue. Just experiencing the story is not enough, I really want to explore, take on side quests and talk to npc's like the original games. Gonna be so bummed if it doesn't get to 10 million. Might as well not exist if it's not a full on sequel that lives up to the brand heritage.

I think 10 million is just the point where it will be full on open world. Barebones story is at 2 million, and we are way past that. Everything more will make the game more like Shenmue as we know it and 10 million will make it fully open world.

So the last hour was a pretty big one with an hourly increase of $6737. This means at $89,350 the running total for today has now surpassed yesterday's. I need sleep now, but tomorrow should be a good day as we should now be in a good position to cross the next stretch goal.

I have a request for anybody whose timezone means they'll be up for the next 4 hours. Could you check the kicktraq hourly (it updates at 2 minutes past the hour) and tell me when it stops adding to the current days total and starts counting a new day?

I'm watching World of Longplay's Shenmue 1 playthrough on my PS4 atm. Man, this game. Even with my yearly playthroughs I can't get enough of it. It is still amazing to think what they pulled off on the DC.

So so happy that this is evening happening. Just hope the outcome is as sweet as possible.

Nice article for people who don't understand what the Shenmue fuss is about https://noobdigest.squarespace.com/shenmue-who

That article is great, and completely makes the case for why an HD remake of Shenmue I & II should be released today on current consoles and PC. So many people completely missed the awe that was Shenmue. Hell it's still a great game today, 14 years later.

I'm debating on whether I want to replay them both now or closer to Shenmue III's release....

So, wait, Gio Corsi wasn't telling the truth when he said Sony would make sure Shenmue III got released? Even Adam Boyes said they were putting "their horse power behind it".

They were talking about marketing and funding, although Gio Corsi is third party relations, which this game will be handled through. And they don't throw nearly as much money around as people probably believe they do.

Well, I tried...

Someone send Notch a copy of Shenmue Passport, it will explain everything.

Play it now AND closer to release :) That's what I am doing!

Incidentally, that video shows just how incredible Shenmue's graphics were. At 1080p they still look good, despite the game being so ancient by now.

I was a day one Dreamcast owner as well as an avid PC gamer back then. So I was accustomed too playing games that looked leagues better than what was found on the PS1 and N64. Shenmue was absolutely jaw dropping to me when I first played it on my DC, those character models were ahead of everything seen on PC at the time or on any other home consoles. The only other game that was comparable was Resident Evil Code Veronica which was release a few months earlier on the Dreamcast. The environments and texture work was nice too for its time, but they weren't huge due to the limitations of the Dreamcast memory. But even though they were large, they were fairly high detailed with a lot to investigate and interact with. Shenmue was a game where all the little distractions could cause you to lose focus of the main storyline in the game.

Many people do compare it to GTA 3, and I don't think it is a fair comparison. GTA 3 has large streaming environments that focuses mostly around driving, in many ways it is closer to Crazy Taxi on the Dreamcast in that respect. Shenmue was much more like... the Sims in an open world. All the characters had their own AI routines that they would follow on a day to day basis. They would all be at certain spots at specific times of the day, and eat and sleep at scheduled times. The game focused more on the people in the town than the mission objectives.

It really was such a unique experience that brought a lot of new things to gaming.

Really wish we could get Sega to say something about HD ports.

Also, I may fund this near the end. When does KS take funds? I funded Yooka Laylee for the ~$15 tier and it ended, got my confirmation, but was seemingly never charged.

As a Shenmue fan I'm happy theres a chance it will live but I can't say I'm particularly confident at how its going to turn out.

Seems like its being mishandled, if all Sony are offering is marketing and the PS4 port... well I can't say that means much to me.

This whole $10m thing seems like a moving goal posts thing considering how much it cost originally, the Kickstarter is extremely unlikely to get that high and even if it does, don't they lose a ton of it in fees, taxes and physical products? Im not really sure what sort of actual game we'll get from it really.

I backed it for $29 which is the most I've put into a Kickstarter so I've done my bit. I feel like this hasn't been thought through, why didn't they start by getting Shenmue 1/2 up on Steam/PSN? Generate interest, work on the partnership then use the proceeds of that to "test the market", get relatively easy income and also potentially find themselves a whole new group of fans who might then be interested in investing in the Kickstarter?

Im less bothered about it being confined to PC/PS4 (although they should get Linux/Mac on there) because I highly doubt WiiU, 3DS and Vita will exist so much December 2017 (not enough to warrant committing to them anyway) and I doubt they could guarantee NX at this point, they'd need a time machine to work out if that was worth it too. Xbox was probably a no given Sony's involvement

Also, $400k of the stretch goals are for subtitle in 4 european languages? I mean... were they just not going to release it in those countries or something?

I really hope it turns out well, but I won't be getting my hopes up.

Kickstarter doesn't collect funds until after the campaign has ended. Though I think it takes a few days for them to process after funding has ended.

Rest assured, Yu Suzuki cares a lot about doing this right. If he says $10m is enough for an open world experience, he's probably got something in mind to justify that opinion.

In regards to Shenmue 1/2, though, there's a simple answer: sega has little to no interest in the franchise. Yu Suzuki and his old AM2 buds are doing this with sega's permission, but without sega's support.

Bear in mind, sega is not anything close to the company it once was.

The understatement of the entire thread! xD

Really, I used to love Sega so much! I always chose them over Nintendo back then, even if I enjoyed Nintendo as well. Sega had all those really cool arcade games... And God knows how much time I spent at the arcade during my younger years.

Now, they barely release anything anymore. They've lost their spark. And it's really sad. Because back then, they created crazy IPs after crazy IPs... Virtua Fighter, Crazy Taxi, Street of Rage, Comix Zone, Panzer Dragoon, Shenmue....

Gosh, when I start enumerating what they've done and accomplished in the past... I start missing them. =(

Yep, that was me too. I stopped buying consoles when the Dreamcast died, and thats no exaggeration.

If I could revive one other Sega franchise from the dead, just one, then it would be Skies of Arcadia. To this day it's still my second favorite rpg, only a hair behind Chrono Trigger for me.

I can't help but think that if it were Microsoft, they would have funded the game full stop, or at least contributed a significant amount of money to the game's development fund.

Microsoft would have forced microtransactions or some other crap on it and I doubt they would have put up that much money anyway.

Hey, we could all get something snarky in about Microsoft, or we could ignore the bad attempt at trolling and move on.

so Sony isn't funding
that last thread about Sony helping with Shenmue III... what was that about? sorry haven't kept up.

Yu Suzuki told Famitsu that he expects the majority of funding would be coming from individual backers.

My understanding is that Sony is handling the PS4 port and providing an undisclosed amount for marketing.

The PS4 version is the one Suzuki and company are doing. The PC version is being done by another team.

No, I meant the part about Ysnet making the PS4 version and another team porting it to PC.

Well, I guess it's still sort of conjecture. But Cedric Biscay is "in charge" of the PC version, according to this interview: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IKb0vtQz8xo

Both Ys Net and Shibuya Productions are listed as co-producers here: http://www.shibuya-productions.com/en/projets.html

Whether this means Shibuya Productions is developing the port, finding someone to develop the port, or publishing the port is unclear.

I agree. The stretch goals just for languages was so high, but I received red flags immediately when I saw the Kickstarter page. It seems short in quality in graphics, writing, etc., like for example, surely not to the level of Bloodstained's page. I have no idea on how someone from Sony did not provide this feedback before the KS went live.

Sony are pledging a little bit, along with many partners, with the Kickstarter backers being a major backer.

It's weird that people seem to assume this is like a Sony published game. The funding model for this is more like an art house film. The way serious art movies get funded these days is a little bit of money from the government, a little bit of money from a TV station, a little bit of money from a small film production company, a little bit from private investors who want to support the arts, etc, coming from all over the world. But you need all of it to fund the final product. Major companies might be involved, but they don't want to risk losing too much.

Every dollar counts.

The game is being developed using Unreal Engine. I don't think they are hiring a separate team to port it to PC.

You know, videogames are made on PC duh

Joke aside, if is a European team who does the port, I'm totally fine, because at least they know how optimizing on PC, right?
The game will be the same after all.

Not to single you out mr or ms Hubble since you're not alone, but!

Ys Net is a small studio that didn't run the very successful Mighty No. 9 Kickstarter campaign* and got featured in Sony's E3 keynote I mean come on people these guys aren't Inti Creates or Deep Silver, Yu Suzuki took some convincing to give Kickstarter a try. Just let them learn and support them if you want.

Or do some grassroots PR of your own if you think you could do a better job, like some folks here have been doing.

* - and I'm not going to say anything about what happened after that!
Also not going to even suggest that Bloodstained may turn out a similar way but seriously that game hasn't shipped and it's way too soon to call the final shebang a success.

No, we're not going to offer feedback to help Ys Net improve but be all rosy. They did a phenomenal job with their Kickstarter page!
