Kind of surprised they didn't go with a director with more of a resume than Watts. You would think Sony would want to go with the safest possible choice... that's a lot of money to bank on Watts.

Why you gotta be so rude? Don't you know he's Spider-human too?

They're counting on that Marvel Magic.

Commenting on the announcement, Tom Rothman, Sony Pictures Motion Pictures Group Chairman, said, “It’s a big day here at Sony. Kevin, Amy and their teams have done an incredible job. The Marvel process is very thorough, and that’s why their results are so outstanding. I’m confident Spider-Man will be no exception. I’ve worked with a number of up-and-coming directors who have gone on to be superstars and believe that Jon is just such an outstanding talent. For Spidey himself, we saw many terrific young actors, but Tom’s screen tests were special. All in all, we are off to a roaring start.”

Those old photos of him aren't going to help get people on his side. I hated him when I googled his pics but after seeing his instagram I can see it.

Need to schedule a photo shoot to show how he looks now.

Even his wikipedia photo is from 2010. (At least at the time of this post.)

Does Jon Watts have a son? Because whoever they get to play the love interest should marry Jon Watts' son.

Bigger deal seems like the bargain bin director. Does he have any upside at all?

I don't know much about Directors, but wasn't Joss Whedon and Shane Black both relatively unknown when they were announced for Avengers and Ironman 3 respectively? I wouldn't worry too much about these "bargain bin" directors.

No they were not. Russo Bros however were pretty unknown.

Shane Black is biggest guy that they ever put at marvel film so far

I'm not familiar with the kid or the director. Hope they were good picks, looking forward to seeing what Marvel does with this.

Lol at OP making a clickbait title and the mods having none of that shit.

Cool :) another Brit. Start learning how to act better, New York-based teenage actors. Jeez.

At least it's not Butterfield!

Marvel got me so jaded I can't even be excited for spiderman anymore (not that the last couple films helped that either tbh)

might pass on this unless I hear good things

My apologies guys, I really don't watch enough movies to know these people. That being said, Russo Bros did really well with Captain America so I'm really not worried at all. Just because this director is unknown, does not necessarily mean he doesn't have a huge amount of talent. If anything, he's lacking experience which can be covered with proper guidance. With the way Marvel Studios works, this should not be a problem at all.

On a serious note, I hope he does well. He definitely looks the part.

Universal Studios picked a directed who literally only directed 1 indie film prior to doing Jurassic World and that paid off PHENOMENALY for them. Credentials don't matter. Would you really want Brett Ratner, McG, Mike Newell, etc. direct this film just because they have more movies/experience under their belt?

*points to the Russo Brothers*

Both the Russo brothers and Whedon had much more impressive resumes. Watts biggest regular gig is directing and producing videos for the Onion. I understand looking for new talent and all, but this seems a bit of a reach.

If this film is only as good as JW, I will be very disappointed.

Well, now I have to watch The Impossible.
It's a great flick that I can recommend highly.
Last watched it on Boxing Day last year to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the Indian Ocean tsunami tragedy.
Bring kleenex. This flick brings the feels.

You guys making fun of a teenager that used to have acne and a mole are the worst kind of people in existence, so, enjoy going through life with that knowledge.

I think the best part about this announcement are the Tumblr reactions. Seriously, some of them are gold.

On-topic, I'm sure Tom will do great.

Looks like he's already worked with Thor in the upcoming film "In the Heart of the Sea"

Have to agree that those old pics don't do justice, but based on his Insta he def. looks like a pretty good choice. That height difference between him and Hemsworth is crazy though.

There are people who kill other people, man.

But I agree that bullying sucks.

If I'm Sony, and with their recent struggle and history, I would probably opt for a safer choice. Not saying it'll end up with the better film...

That said, it seems like the Fiege machine can turn anything into a good film so...

I'm still unsure about this news(mostly of the director), but it's kinda hilarious to see people on tumblr say it's gonna flop just cause of Tom.

acceptable.

i still would have preferred O'Brien, but I like this choice better than Butterfield.

Now all that's left to do is hope the movie is good!

Who and who?

Never had acne or mole during adolescence, I consider myself lucky. But you are right.

A more recent pic
So he's had the chin mole removed like the A list stars Sarah Jessica Parker and Enrique Igloos-ears before him.

Just got the remaining side-nose mole, acne and greasy hair to clear up and he's all set for Hollywood stardom.

I hope, that like my post, they are posting with some irony.

Personally, I'm not quite Brad Pitt myself and wouldn't expect to be cast in a Spider-Man movie. And if I was, I'd expect the ridiculing that would follow on the interwebs.

Whedon was already popular but never directed a movie before Avengers

So.... I'm a bit out of the loop.

Why are they doing another Spiderman movie so soon? The last one didn't even have a trilogy. I only saw the first movie, did the series conclude properly?

Is this reboot and another origin story? It's hard for me seeing a lot of people getting excited about a new Spiderman so soon.

Sony made a deal with Marvel to include Spider-Man in the Avengers. The previous Spider-Man couldn't be included. Where was he during the battle of New York?
No origin, but it will be a reboot.
The last one didn't end with a cliffhanger, but they could continue the series.
