Persona 5 Trailer 2

Easier to do this by bullet points:

1. They definitely would have started localization for Persona 5 a long time ago if it was going to release in 2015 in North America. Hell, the work they did for the Persona 5 E3 promo poster would be considered localization.

2. A game not being translated does not mean it has to be omitted from E3. See: Genei Ibun Roku #FE, Persona Q and the untranslated trailers they release on their North American YouTube channel for Persona games all the time.

Exactly. If P5 is being released in 2015 in JP and NA, that means that concurrent localization alongside development is happening which to my knowledge is pretty uncommon.

But on the other topic; a trailer is assuredly marketing. Not sure what alternate universe it is where a trailer isn't marketing. Especially a trailer showing a whole lot of new and cool stuff. :P

I think this is reaching a little bit, but I desperately want it to be true. Plus, it's a Tuesday.

Dude, of course it is reaching. It's a joke, someone in this very thread asked if there was going to be a hidden meaning in the text and I came up with what you see above. The date just happens to work out to be a Tuesday.

They didnt start localization of the game probably. Thus, they had nothing to show for the western market.
Whatever reason there is for them not showing anything, they sure as hell could have done something about it if they were interested in marketing the game at the biggest game show in the world.

But yeah keep defending them.

The lack of marketing for a game supposedly coming out in 2015 points to Atlus doing what they've always done with major marketing for their very close to their release and releasing this game same day in Japan, NA, and EU. It might not be till late 2015, but if it is a simultaneous release, we'll hear about it coming to the rest of the world at about the same time we get a release date for Japan.

Has Atlus ever had a simultaneous worldwide release? The only simultaneous US and Japan release I can think of is P4 Arena, and even then Europe got the shaft on that if i remember correctly.

Why would people import it? Unless you know Japanese language how can you understand the story? Because I don't think Japan version comes with the translation or does it? I never tried to import a game from Japan so Idk how would that work for people.

Works super well if you read Japanese but don't live in Japan.

The closest I can think of are Persona 4 Arena (12 days after the Japanese release) and Devil Survivor Overclocked (9 days before the Japanese release).

Time for some speculation!

0:00 - 0:24

I'm going to say that this is probably a mix between the MC's first visit to the Velvet Room and the actual activation of his Persona. We know from the last trailer there's going to be a train derailing, so this might be where the MC awakens.

0:25 - 0: 35

The sneering, yellow-eyed MC we see is doubtlessly Arsene, unless Shadow Selves are making a comeback. Given the scene immediately following this is probably the first time the MC summons Arsene. From some of the translations floating around, it's probably Arsene who's talking as well. I guess the sticking point for me would be why the MC is already in his thief garb.

EDIT: Just a thought, but from the way the scene transitions, is it possible that the Persona itself creates the costume, like the costume itself is an expression?

EDIT 2: I think I might be looking at this all wrong. Between the golden eyes, the blood, and being consumed by blue flame, we may actually be seeing the MC awakening his Personae to fight two demons. Like, that is him all battered and bloody, and he summons Arsene to fight back, which also creates his costume.

0:36 - 0:53

The only thing worth mentioning here is the scene with the MC getting a mugshot. Maybe it's the opening?

0:55 - 1:02

All of this seems to be taking place on the first day of school. Are the MC, Ryuji and Anne already acquainted?

1:03 - 1:07

I guess they're ditching the hallways for more personalized, interactive dungeons. What could this mean for the schedule?

1:08 - 1:23

So I think this is the real megaton of the trailer. I'm going to go ahead and say that, between the spasms, the heart masks, and straight up having Norn explode from that dude's body, that the enemies we've been seeing are the Persona itself, separated from its host through the process by which people "lose their heart", given a physical form to wander around and then revealing itself to attack. This would also neatly explain how the enemies appear as large knights on the field and become Demons in combat. I still don't have an explanation for the MC's HP and MP, but I think that right there is the first boss/mini-boss of the game.

1:24 - 1:34

I'll break down the next few seconds of rapid screen flashing in order.

First, given how Anne is shocked/scared and Ryuji and the MC are moving in front of her, we might be seeing somebody they know who's been possessed/ "lost their heart".

The people reacting are probably just patrons of the casino seeing the MC jump around. Actually, now that I think about it, given the apparent emphasis on the Seven Deadly Sins, is it unreasonable to assume that this casino would be a Greed dungeon?

The MC leaping onto the Shadow Man and ripping off his mask is probably just an in-game cutscene. Perhaps he's freeing the possessed victim, if that's how that works.

The brief flash of the MC with his face covered in blood is probably from the awakening. The last trailer also ended with the MC's face covered in blood before it vanished when it transformed into Arsene.

Ryuji's going nuts! This might be how people are having their Personae ripped out, if I'm right about the plot.

Lastly, the MC being surrounded by police cars is probably going to be his first public appearance, marking him out as a villain to the general public while he works in secret to save them.

1:35 - 1:38

We see more of the scene with the characters running away from a collapse. Strangest of all is that none of them are wearing their masks.

1:39 - 1:53

Jun, is that you? Chances are that's another party member, or at least some very plot important NPC, spreading the message of the heroes.

1:54 - 2:14

Definitely the MC's first arrival to the Velvet Room, between being shocked that he's there and the build-up to Igor and the Twins. Voice is probably Arsene again.

Here's to some more info in the coming months.

I'm trying to find out the voice actors and I really think Ryuji is Daisuke Ono.

Check this out if anyone agrees.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wQlcP433mh8

At 2:30 he ends the sentence じゃねーか (janai ka) like Ryuji does in the trailer, though not as deep / aggressive tone.
And after 9:11 he uses a voice tone more like Ryuji's.

Combine these two samples mentally and I think it matches the trailer's Ryuji.

that'll happen in the next month or two, if previous games are any indication. whether you get a release date now or in 10 weeks is gonna make zero difference to anything or anyone other than gamers who never learned that the world isn't always going to give them instant gratification

You are right. I just think fans have been waiting so long for a follow up to Persona 4, that the final wait is too much. They aren't trying to be malicious. I can only speak for myself, but persona means so much to me. It's played a pivotal role in my life, and has been a great source of joy, even during the hard times. I've never loved a series so much. It just means more to me than words can express.

So Atlus being very tight lipped and very limited on their marketing, it's made it really hard. Also some paranoid fans are nervous the NA version won't actually make it to its 2015 fall launch. Whether irrational or not, I just think people want a small slice. Just something.

I understand what you mean about instant gratification. And normally I would agree. But this series means a lot to people. So I guess fans are just passionate.

1. I should have mentioned about having a portion of the game localized and ready to be shown.

2. They had a E3 trailer which is essentialy PV 01. Also they woudnt show new footage to the western market. Atlus primary market is still Japan. Also, Atlus did not want no new information released before P4DAN release. They didnt want P5 to take P4DAN spotlight in any way.

But they had a booth at E3 with Persona 5. Also they released a "english" PV.

This is all on Atlus. The marketing is non-existent for their biggest game ever. It's not surprising that people are nervous.

PV1 has been out for a long while so that really doesn't count. Atlus should really strive to make the West its primary market considering how consoles are fairing in Japan.

There is a huge audience hungry for RPGs on PS4 world wide (PS3 is dead in terms of software sales in the West). Also P4g sold pretty well in the West and Persona series has only been growing since that release.

Frankly I am thinking they are just afraid to overshadow P4DAN with P5 and the CF that happened with that game dev is affecting persona marketing.

I want to believe that they are saving money so that they can put out commercials and stuff like that. Hopefully they show up at the Paris game show and psx. You just can't give up those chances where potential consumers are focused in on an event.

The phantom outfit appears when he awakens Arsense, he's in his school uniform initially. I'm guessing that Personas now also give their users more direct powers beyond just regular summoning (hence the increased agility) and so the outfit is just a physical representation of the fact that they are no longer their regular selves.

I thought this was a poster for a second :(

the game is still most likely 4-6 months out

if it's september and you still haven't heard anything, feel free to get paranoid and point out how wrong i was

I've explained my theory so many times I'm too tired for the full version, but shortly...

I think the game is mostly finished / in QA (original summer release postponed because P4D delay) and has been in localization for longer time than many are expecting.

A picture is worth a thousand words.

And it should actually read: Persona 5 out September 8th, 2015 for the states.

P............5.O....8............9...................5...........4.......T....S
Persona 5 Out 8 (day) • 9 (month) • 15 (year) (4)For The States

It all comes together!
The marketing period would be very short then even by Atlus standards.

Edit: also, surely the US would be month, day, year

With all the classic SMT Demons apparently being rendered in HD for this game, I wonder if it'll be followed up with a mainline Shin Megami Tensei announcement, to get more mileage out of the assets.

At least I hope it means it won't be like P3 and 4 where there were a couple handfuls of enemy types and truckloads of palette swaps.

Too soon for SMT V, a new megaten IP is likely though. We'll see SMT V in 2021.

Game had a huge presence at E3. P5 art on most badges, big part of the Atlus booth (which was in a great position on the floor, right by the Sony & Nintendo booths) and that P5 tote bag was everywhere. It was pretty much impossible to attend E3 and not have seen something P5 related. Anyone who thinks they aren't marketing this wasn't at E3.

At a western event? Where thousands of dedicated fans worldwide will be watching? Pshaw! Look forward to buying Persona 3: Golfing All Morning which comes with an exclusive blu-ray of PV03!

The point I was trying to make is that if it weren't for Atlus' slipshod marketing, nobody would be worried as to whether the game was going to come out this year.

Meguro has done it again, that music is pure ear sex

Agreed. Plus, acid jazz is one of my favourite genres, so I love the idea of Meguro dabbling within this sphere of music.

I've explained my theory so many times I'm too tired for the full version, but shortly...

I also agree with this.

I got this on repeat still from the Youtube video, ( can't shut the tab and I'm afraid if a pause it it will glitch) so I now have seen this trailer 100+ times.

I've never played a Persona before, but these trailers are making me hype. And the music is so good, reminds me of some Cowboy Bebop type stuff.

So Atlus's site is down atm.

I'm guessing they're redesigning it to be p5 themed?

well they were actually hacked awhile ago so they are fixing that. The U.S branch will still be mostly focused on promoting their smaller games and P4DAN.

And yet what sites were talking about it? Barely any coverage from the hundreds of press sites at E3. Their booth just had 1 cordoned-off TV screen repeating the same old trailer from February. All the Atlus interviews and live demos were for Persona 4 Dancing with absolutely no mention of P5.

So they were marketing it to people at E3 but not to anyone else. Doesn't sound that great to me.

Who's at E3? Other developers, game media, youtubers, and hardcore gamers who managed to sneak in. Seems like a good group to market to.

At E3, maybe only a hundred people played our demo and a few hundred more saw somebody else playing the demo. But those people can spread the word to others. For example one of the people who loved our demo was David Jaffe and soon after he got online, he was posting stuff online about how much he loved the game (even said it was his favorite game at E3 that he wasn't working on). And who knows how many of the people who saw his praise will be sure to check out the game when it comes out when otherwise it wouldn't even be on their radar. And he's hardly the only one like this.

You get P5 on people's radars so that when you're ready to focus on it, you get good responses. You don't want to get people so hyped up that they ignore the other game you're releasing earlier.

It's a decent group to market too, but you have to remember that these are people who are very likely to have seen everything Persona 5 related to begin with. It's entirely possible, especially given how little buzz it generated, that these people probably didn't hype up Persona 5 that much with no new material.

For what it's worth, a quick Google search turns up articles on the lack of new info. Take that as you will.

That's because there hasn't been any new info. The reality is that Atlus Japan will dictate info flow for this game. Until that flow really starts there's really nothing that Atlus US can do. All they have is the media that Atlus Japan has released so far, which obviously isn't much. There's not a lot there that they can use for a real marketing push.

It stinks that the amount of actual new footage in the trailer is quite small, but it's still cool to see something new after almost half a year of radio silence. Maybe now that DAN is finally out in Japan, that huge Famitsu spread we've all been waiting for for six years will finally land in our laps in a few weeks...yeah right. Like many in this thread, I have a hard time believing P5 will make it out this year. Here's to being wrong!

Also, Atlus only distributing the trailer on a special Blu-Ray and going after any copies of it posted online, and all of this only one week after E3, where hundreds of thousands around the world could have been exposed to Persona for the first time, goes to show just how different the Japanese and Western notions of what it means to promote something can be. From my Western perspective, making sure that only people who are already very likely to know about and buy your product see your promotional material for that product seems like the exact opposite of promotion!
