SHENMUE 3 kickstarter (PC/PS4) - FINAL DAY - NEW KS RECORD GO GO GO!

Not open for further replies.
I have no goddamn idea about this series at all but I backed it for 29$.
However, seeing the enthusiasm of you guys really moved me.

Will probably move my pledge up near the end of the run.
The Shenmue community is very warm and tight-nit! Welcome, thanks for being part of this!

Hope you get the chance to experience the original games sometime! Sega needs to get on those HD re-releases...

the next step is to clarify the new gameplay mechanics and what yu meant in the 10 million statement in as plain english as possible on he kickstarter.

doesn't seem like anything else will put the faux concern to bed for good.
I really do feel like there has a very positive shift in tone since this latest update. Honestly, the humility of Suzuki really got me as I read it, it was great to hear from the man himself, and not to hear hype-talk from Awesome Japan coordinators.

I have so much respect for this man.

Thank you! Hopefully you'll be able to play the previous two games before this one releases.

There's so much focus on the ones that refuse to donate, but it's people like you that help spotlight on the positives of this Kickstarter.

Good post
I've had an increasingly despondent view of gamers and the industry in general for the past few years and the Shenmue 3 announcement was the first time in ages I've been genuinely excited about a game. To see the reception over the past few days has been so gross it's driven the final nail in the coffin. Fuck this medium.

Hate the gamers. Love the game.

Glad you're making these. I thought about making some, but maybe later. Right now, focused on playing through both games and recording some B-roll for a tribute to Yu Suziki and Shenmue.

Before then, of course, I'll be releasing some random fan art that will hopefully be of wallpaper quality :)

Shenmue 1 just keeps giving. After 15 years, I'm still finding new stuff. Just troll around under the staircase across from the kitten. At about 9:30 pm it's upskirt central up in there.

I wonder if any YouTube or twitch personality will ever make a persuasive video to counteract all the FUD surrounding ShenmueIII. We really need to clear the air a bit but there's only so much fans can do for those who have been convinced this is not the game we wanted after all. Ugh. It's maddening.

Happy Console Gamer did a great video that did exactly that. He's not one of the most influential Youtubers sadly, but nonetheless a great effort.

my brother.

This should say right as ball meets face "Funded!" and be used at every stretch goal.

:">

I feel that there is absolutely no need to thank me or anyone who does something similar, which in this case is to bring back to life series of games with distinct souls and characters especially in this market of mostly generic-more-of-the-same games. I feel everyone who calls himself a gamer owes himself that. So I am just doing my part. :)

To be perfectly honest about Shenmue though, when I first read about it briefly I suspect that it is just a case of nostalgia that makes people go batshit crazy when 3 was announced but now that I've dug deeper and see more materials of the game, I can see why you guys act like you do.

Just by reading and looking at videos and gifs itt alone, I can see that these games have so much soul in them that it makes me want to play them more than any the 20 games I just got through the Steam sales, or any of those 200 games in my backlog.

Now speaking of playing, is there anyway at all I can play them right at this moment? Outside of buying a Dreamcast and fixing my original xbox? Emulators perhaps?
Now a HD remaster of the 2 games is the dream but I don't know if that is even at all possible.

Great message, totally agree about the uniqueness and sense of soul found in Shenmue. It's very Japanese, in a much older way than most of what people would say that about. Characters in the game often talk about the "day the snow turned to rain," and the whole game is filled with such a unique sense of both the melancholy, and nostalgic beauty of youth. Shenmue II than expands on that pallette and brings in a lot of color.

As for playing the game, the emulation seems to have some real issues and doesn't seem to be an ideal way to play it, though some people have been able to make it run pretty well.

Shenmue II is (I believe) backwards compatible on 360, and comes with Shenmue the movie, which is a DVD video of the first game's story. That's helpful, but doesn't really capture the joy of the game itself. I think Shenmue II is kind of an overwhelming entrance to the series. The initial simplicity of the first game is really helpful for getting into the groove of the experience.

Any gamer friends who might have a dreamcast lying around you could use?

Awwwww yisssss! Backer number 45,295 baby! I donated $300 today. After the conversion from US dollars it’s going to come to something like $400 Australian dollars! O_o

Oh well, it’s worth it. This is Shenmue after all. The GOAT. And I couldn’t say no to an illustration signed by Yu Suzuki. Gonna get that framed and stick it on my wall proudly.

Wohoo! That is a very generous amount to pledge :D Thanks for helping the dream become even more spectacular!

so... i may play through the whole of shenmue again so i have enough footage to cut a higher resolution version of this trailer

besides the free camera floaty parts it seems kind of achievable

i do want to show some shenmue II off too though, as i think a lot of the fan material made for the kickstarter has been focussing more on the original.

don't get me wrong, i love them both, but when trying to pitch the game to non-fans as a kung fu epic shenmue II fits the bill more. the original is a slow burning crime drama if anything.

Shenmue I is one of the most hard to categorize games I've ever played. It's kind of a grief simulator.

I'm amazed that shitty looking Ryo placeholder model is still on the front page of the Kickstarter for all to see. How hard is it to replace him with an uprezzed model from the Dreamcast games, or at the very least, something that actually resembles the character's original appearance. White-washed Ryo with the dead eyes and vacant stare needs to be erased from the face of the Earth immediately.

I love that even Yu hates temp Ryo with a passion.

Hmm good idea, it never crossed my mind to borrow from friends at all because I really like to own my games and my machines :D. Plus I am a PC-centric gamer (I ever only own a NES, a SNES and the orig Xbox :P) and so are almost all of my friends, but it never hurts to put words out I suppose.

And yeah, I absolutely am a non-fan of watching, if I can't play it then so be it.

Thanks for the input, I will investigate some more to see what my best option is.

I had mentioned something about Shenmue on facebook awhile back, and a few of my friends commented on how they had Dreamcasts and the game in a closet somewhere. I think I inspired at least one of them to drag it out and play again.

Dreamcast fans are fanatics, and love to convert others. Like Ryo in Shenmue, they don't deal very well with loss.

that's totally true. i don't think there's really anything similar, except shenmue II.
Some of the early sections of Heavy Rain definitely reminded me a bit of Shenmue, but on a more limited scale. Similar sense of atmosphere and tangible reality at times.

I wonder how much something like alternative outfits would cost to implement in the game, anybody here with character modelling experience. At the moment there's a big gap in the stretch goals between 3.5m and 4m, where things start happening again. They should try to add some stretch goals to bridge the gap, but not ones that are going to significantly add to the game's budget, to give people something to aim for and lessen the slog to 4m.

Completely agree. Little stretch goals like that make it fun for backers and give them a sense of progression, whilst not really making more work for the creators. Fun cosmetic things like different outfits are a great example of that.

All kickstarters are heavily frontloaded -- and backloaded. other big gaming kickstarters have proven this time and time again. Another million over the final 2 days would't be remotely surprising (and is probably on the low side).

But the time between now and then will determine a lot, and for that matter influence the size of the final push.

Yeah all Kickstarters are front loaded and backloaded, but the fact that it was announced at a press conference at the biggest gaming event of the year probably made this the most heavily frontloaded gaming kickstarter of all time. I've never seen a kickstarter take down the kickstarter website before. It's not exactly surprising that funding has slowed more then other gaming kickstarters. So many people here seem so disapointed that funding and the number of backers has slowed down so much, but it's honestly given how this kickstarter was announced it's not surprising.

And you're right, the final push in the last few days will probably get the kickstarter at least another 1-2 million. I doubt it will hit $10 million like some people want, but it's still going to make a good amount of money and Shenmue fans are going to finally get the game they want.

What we need to do is worry less about the numbers and more about convincing people the Kickstarter is cool, we need to create the second wave that will bring us closer to getting more money into this kickstarter, despairing over things that will happen only if we make them so isn't going to help this campaign at all.
So yeah to anyone reading this and is watching on the side, back this campaign! If you care about Shenmue back this campaign, if you don't care about Shenmue just look at how much we care about Shenmue! Tell your friends. kthx

Honestly, as long as the game tops Bloodstained's 5.6 total (which is very likely) I'll be quite satisfied. Yu has said he'll be able to to do some things he really wants to at the 5 million mark.

It will also make the game the most successful Kickstarter game of all time, which is a huge PR win for Shenmue and might make it even easier to get more investment in the project/press attention/sales on completion.

Heh, count me as a new one then.

New article up on GameSpot. Provides clarification, which is great for getting the word out to the masses and diffusing ill-founded hysteria.

Good, now people only need to read it and understand.
Unfortunately, there are still people with the budget fallacy and "KS was only to gauge interest" in the comments.

Shenmue 3 Creator Says Sony Won't See a Cent of Kickstarter Funds - Gamespot
This article was just re-tweeted by Shuhei Yoshida. A good sign that this is the official word from Sony on this matter.

I did what I could (Gameblog is the second biggest gaming website in France): http://www.gameblog.fr/news/51676-shenmue-3-sony-ne-touche-pas-un-centime-de-l-argent-du-kicks
Did you write that? If so, great job!

Big sites love to cash in on faux-controversy, and then cash in on the faux-controversy backlash.

It is a ridiculous cycle.
It is indeed a problem that needs to be confronted but the way internet reporting and web ad revenue works, it's very easy to see why this system of reporting backtracking is so prevalent.

Yes I did.
Awesome work.

It's so ridiculous. A lot of the time they won't even take responsibility for their own concern trolling and instead point to some poorly informed opinions on twitter with a headline like "fans have concerns about...", thus allowing people to form their own (wrong) conclusions about what's going on.

At this point, there doesn't need to be a fire. There just has to be someone yelling fire, and these sites will point to them and say "Person yells fire. IS THERE FIRE?"

I wasted so many hours defending the topic about transparency in business deal.
Who cares where the money will go.
I could care less if they spent the funding on hookers and drugs if the game is released in a reasonable manner with good QA.
Now unless the project fails to deliver then yes, demand an answer where the money went.
But right now? Meh, it is a KS with expected risks.

I still have 2 on the xbox. Never got to finish it. Will it be better to finish 1 and 2 off before jumping into 3?
Definitely! The story of 3 seems to be picking up right after where 2 left off, and the story of Shenmue is pretty dense. Also, 2 is awesome and worth finishing.

It always will be as it is awesome just playing those games! But if you don't fancy it there will be recap movies that come bundled with Shenmue 3. You've got at least 2 years until that happens so you should enjoy the previous games before then :D

Hopefully Sega will do a port of 1 + 2 to modern consoles/PC in the next 18 months so you could wait for that (or at least an announcement).

I'm nearing the end of my Shenmue 1 play through that I started a few weeks back and it is just fantastic! I'm not looking forward to the end fight as I'm still terrible at fighting in Shenmue, I'm a typical button masher :p

Not enough time in the Dojo with Fuku-san!
