Satya Nadella reveals Microsofts new mission statement, ‘tough choices’ ahead

Finally, we will build the best instantiation of this vision through our Windows device platform and our devices, which will serve to delight our customers, increase distribution of our services, drive gross margin, enable fundamentally new product categories, and generate opportunity for the Windows ecosystem more broadly. We will pursue our gaming ambition as part of this broader vision for Windows and increase its appeal to consumers. We will bring together Xbox Live and our first-party gaming efforts across PC, console, mobile and new categories like HoloLens into one integrated play.

At least Xbox is mentioned ^_^! I was a little afraid seeing the title of the article. Curious to see what else they're going to push for with PC gaming (And Xbox Live?).

It sure seems like they're pushing for Windows 10 to be the end-all-be-all of everything Microsoft. Wonder if they'll pull it off?

I got to meet Satya (every so briefly) at the Xbox Fanfest thing last week at E3. Living in LA my whole life and working around the entertainment industry, I don't get 'starstruck' often, but meeting him was probably one of the few times I could legitimately say I was starstruck. Nerd.

He was excited to see peoples reaction to the conference and we talked about how people were most excited for the Backwards Compatibility & HoloLens.. the old and the new.

I really dig Nadella, it'll be interesting to see what they come up with under his leadership.

Is there a general idea of how morale is in the company? Are employees excited about the new vision?

Sounds like Win 10 is supposed to finish the unification job win 8 was supposed to do but...really really faltered at. Will be interesting if they can pull it off and I don't see any obvious problems with win 10 so far.

I wonder if a Steam-machines model w/Windows 10 (yearly hardware updates) is more in-line with Microsofts vision than a traditional console.

Yup, this is what I'm thinking. I really hope they pull it together.

I really like new MS, they currently seem to have the right people in the right places. It increased my confidence in them, especially with the current moves they've been pulling. Great stuff.

Nutella and Phil seem to be on the same page, nice!

I ... uhh. I'll be in the kitchen.

OT: Very excited to upgrade to Windows 10 from 7.

Also excited about this talk of first-party games on PC.

If I could sell my Xbox One and support MS IPs from my PC ... best believe I would. In a heartbeat.

Neo-Microsoft seems to be heading in a good direction, both Nadella and Spencer seem like they have solid plans for Windows and Xbox.

If Windows 10 is the end all be all then why wouldn't Microsoft put its games on both desktop Win10 and console Win10 (Xbox)?

Games sell platforms. Microsoft needs desktop Win10 to sell more than it needs console Win10 to sell.

So.. yeah.. interesting times.

I'm glad MS is sticking it out. This is a company that makes a lot of money. I've seen investors try to argue, that it's not worth staying in gaming. Like, the amount of money that has to get floated out vs. the return. Like that isn't great enough, to keep justifying it. Not sure if that is actually true (I'm not 100% on how much MS gaming division actually brings back in).

But regardless, I get they are a company that makes a lot of money. And not everyone might be on board with this. I'm just glad they are sticking it out, and have the right people running the games division. MS has been making all the right moves. Big props to Phil Spencer. I'm a PC/PS4 gamer this gen (and of course Wii U/3DS)...but I mean, most of the content on X1, I've played on PC and PS4 over it.

I really like the X1 a lot. And I'm really glad to see the amount of work being put into it to improve it (new UI looks slick, the Elite controller is amazing. Backwards compatibility etc. etc). So the X1 isn't like my main console, but I'm really impressed with the hustle. Makes me glad to have bought the console. It also just makes me happy for all the gamers whose main console IS the X1.

Like others have said though, will be interesting to see how Windows 10 actually impacts the platform (and how unification actually works). I am skeptical, as I was not a fan of Windows 8 at all. I even kind of dislike the tiles in X1 UI (although the UI is slick). But that new UI preview looks amazing. So if that is what we can look forward to with Windows 10, I have hopes!

What competition does Desktop Windows 10 have to worry about?

When I see 'tough choices' I normally think cancellations/discontinued support.

But Nadella's full statement goes the exact opposite direction.

I'm going full Windows 10 this summer/fall. I hope everyone else follows.

Windows 10 isn't finished yet (it's getting there). Those games still have to be created on the Windows 10 platform or ported to it to make that work.

It is awesome seeing Xbox Live mentioned (seeing that makes me think Xbox is definitely in MS for the long term). Xbox is Microsoft gaming platform and it seems (especially seeing backwards compatibility) that if you buy (at least first party) your game on Xbox...it will follow you wherever you are. This is something that Phil Spencer has preached and you can see the fruits of that happening with Killer Instinct, Gigantic, and Fable Legens being the first games using cross-buy and cross-play. When it goes to the phone (windows phone) as well (as well as it can) that's when it'll be crazy.

This "new" Microsoft under Nadella's leadership has been hitting all the right notes.

Xbox took a huge turn upwards, Windows 10 is looking really good.. Nice outlook (hehe) for the future.

I wish they'd get on with this part of the strategy. Seems like they've spent the first 6 months of this year suggesting they were committed to going down this path and yet they had E3 announcements where some games were cross-device and others were Xbox One exclusive.

I'm curious too. I didn't know about him until he became CEO, but I have been pleasantly surprised by his approach of technolgy (adnecdotically, some very practical features he demanded for the Surface, for example... it reminded me of stories with Bill Gates and the Courier).
That makes me even more curious about Hololens, which he probably approves for MS to be pushing it so much. I admit I can't see that device getting mass appeal, but since Nadella isn't the "pie in the sky" type of man and is probably smarter than I am, there must be something I'm missing.

Well there's a ton of Apple laptops around that MS would like to get back I'm sure.

But other than that desktops themselves are losing out to Phone and Tablets. Desktop games are something that Phones and Tablets can't provide.

Plus there's SteamOS as well. Halo 6/GOW 5 or whatever only on Win10 does move against what Valve is trying to do.

He is the right guy at the right time for Microsoft.

His background in cloud technology is a huge bonus considering that is where the market is heading.

SteamOS doesn't even come close to even scratching their marketshare in gaming PCs, just check Steam metrics. Apple computers represent a very small portion of overall PC users.

So like, anyone that has Windows 10 beta, is it like...actually better than Windows 8? I haven't seen anything on it tbh. Totally in the dark. I wasn't the biggest fan of Windows 8.1 I used desktop mode at all time, and don't ever use the Tiles (I have tried them extensively, and they just weren't for me). I know it's not finished. And I know this is talking about unifying the games on it (something I am excited for). I guess just outside the UI preview (that looked amazing), I really have no idea how this will impact their X1 platform. Again, wasn't the biggest fan of how windows 8 shaped a big role for X1 UI. But I did love the preview. So...

Killer Instinct on PC was a step in the right direction. I approve of this new MS.

Nadella is the shit.

So like, anyone that has Windows 10 beta, is it like...actually better than Windows 8? Is it finally as good as 7? I haven't seen anything on it tbh. Totally in the dark. Better than 7.

Windows 8 is better than 7 except for the lack of a real start menu.

  • It started faster.
  • Moved/Copied files faster.
  • Natively mounted ISO files.
  • Contained a much better and advanced task manager.
  • Used less resources on a whole than Windows 7.
  • Not to mention it is a more secure operating system.

Windows 10 is everything that Windows 8 improved on but with all the features people that like Windows 7 wanted back included(plus more).

Am I the only one for whom this inspires fear rather than hope?

I take it as "We're going to make a mess for a few years and then leave the smouldering crater for someone else to deal with when we get bored."

What competition does Desktop Windows 10 have to worry about?

Windows 7/people not upgrading. Legit concern if you're in MS' position. Probably a big part of why win 10 is Free* and some of the UI changes (though I'm on win 8, was planning to upgrade and am quite happy about both, they're just icing on the cake)

Hope this doesnt mean paid online...

Its good that they dont want to leave neither pc gamers or xbox gamers.

They've already confirmed that Xbox Live on PC is free.

It might've been a legit concern for Windows 8 but Windows 10 has a proper start menu but is also a much better OS.

It being free for anyone with Windows 7 helps too.

That's actually a good point. I still think a lot of people preferred 7, although I am 100% ignorant on that subject, so I shouldn't have brought it up. I use Desktop mode in 8.1, so it basically is 7 to me. And you are right, it is faster etc. I just took that out of my post. Thanks for pointing that out. Also thanks for letting me know Windows 10 is pretty awesome.
