About time. Wish it hadn't taken this long, but at least now we don't have to worry about certain states dragging their feet anymore.

In all seriousness, this is a first step for the LGBT people, this gives you (us) the chance to show the rest that there isn't a "them" and "us", this is where barriers start falling if we make it so.

The states don't have a choice. This decision trumps them.

They fight this, they'll get beat in the courts again. And again. And again.

They literally do not have a legal leg to stand on.

Not really, no. They have to listen to the Supreme Court, whether its 5-4 or 9-0. Only potential problem with a 5-4 decision is it makes it slightly more likely to be overturned in the future if some of the liberal judges get replaced by conservative ones (AKA make sure to vote Democrat instead of Republican).
 
What an incredible moment. I think a lot of people will be surprised. Most people I know didn't even know the Supreme Court was doing anything important. I told some friends that same sex marriage would be legal Friday and they didn't believe something like that could happen without any of them having heard of it. Fantastic news. Can't wait to see all the happy reactions this weekend.

And to read Scalia''s dissent.
 
It's amazing to me how fast the tide turned on this one. Civil rights issues always seem to move at a glacial pace, but here we are. Pretty incredible.
 
With all the bad shit that's been happening in our country, it's nice to see something really good happen like this. Misty eyed at my desk now.

Knew this was coming but still can't believe how far we've come since California prop 8 in 2008. That was really disheartening. Incredible news today.

nope. I believe the ruling basically says the 14th amendment equal protection clause applies to equality of marriage

All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside. No State shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States; nor shall any State deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws.
