Why is this gif in every thread about gay marriage?
 
5-4 is just barely squeaking by. I can't remember what it was but listening to NPR they had a person on who seemed to believe a really close decision might not be great for this getting adopted by the states. Is there anything to this?

Unless they want to get sued by the federal government, they will abide by the law.

Dammit, it looks like it's another Kennedy opinion that waves its hands around and comes to the right conclusion but doesn't really explain very well how it got there. This isn't exactly surprising, but I was really hoping it would touch on some of the broader equal protection questions in regards to sexual orientation.

That's because there really is no Constitutional justification for the decision reached here. Much like Roe v. Wade, the justices had a policy decision they wanted to achieve and they came up with some vague appeal to the Constitution to make it look like they were following their traditional responsibility of interpreting the Constitution when the Supreme Court for the most part abandoned that a long time ago.
 
A major injustice overturned, benefiting millions of people, letting love and togetherness triumph over anachronistic morality and bigotry. The 5-4 almost makes it even better thanks to all the individualized bitter tears from the dissenting side.
 
I'm so happy I don't even care about the salt. I feel no need to indulge the shadenfreude (but then again, as a straight guy I haven't been discriminated against my whole life either). Pulse, I binged on shadenfreude yesterday, I'm full.

In any case, this is just a great, historic day. I'm proud of my country.
 
Took long enough. I'd love to read the dissents, just to see how much hatred still has a seat in the highest court in the land. Scalia is seriously borderline fascist. PEACE.
 
Scalia's dissent has an awesome footnote on page 7 (note 22): he says, "If, even as the price to be paid for a fifth vote, I ever joined an opinion for the Court that began: ‘The Constitution promises liberty to all within its reach, a liberty that includes certain specific rights that allow persons, within a lawful realm, to define and express their identity,’ I would hide my head in a bag. The Supreme Court of the United States has descended from the disciplined legal reasoning of John Marshall and Joseph Story to the mystical aphorisms of the fortune cookie." He is not happy with Justice Kennedy.

Please someone make the dancing salt shaker include Scalias face
 
What a moment. Spectacular stuff. Doesn't this put the US ahead of Canada in this regard now? lol.

We have some catch up to do.

Best news to wake up to, as a bisexual man in a gay relationship that is moving to the states, I couldn't be happier.

wasn't there a couple that said they would break up if gay marriage was legalized? lol
