Black presidents, Confederate flags falling, gays getting married.

This is some kind of hellscape right now for conservatives.

Aww dammit, now I have to marry a guy. Thanks Obama.

This is so awesome. I'm really looking forward to reading bitter salty missives from conservative websites over the next couple of days.

This is SO bad. I’m just glad I don’t live near any coastlines or fault lines. This is going to be a real SHTF time. Just the other day, a tree, must have been at least 50 years old, just a few blocks from where I work, blue down in a freak squall. Big trees are not supposed to just uproot for no reason. Bad omen? You betcha. Reckon I’ll be stocking up on bottled water and batteries.

Gays: destroyers of institutions and uprooters of trees.

So happy this is finally over. I will admit Chief Justice Roberts dissenting opinion was more down to earth then the others. I understand where he is coming from but at the same time this needed to be done

This is his opinion

Although the policy arguments for extending marriage to same-sex couples may be compelling, the legal arguments for requiring such an extension are not. The fundamental right to marry does not include a right to make a State change its definition of marriage. And a State’s decision to maintain the meaning of marriage that has persisted in every culture throughout human history can hardly be called irrational. In short, our Constitution does not enact any one theory of marriage. The people of a State are free to expand marriage to include same-sex couples, or to retain the historic definition.
Today, however, the Court takes the extraordinary step of ordering every State to license and recognize same-sex marriage. Many people will rejoice at this decision, and I begrudge none their celebration. But for those who believe in a government of laws, not of men, the majority’s approach is deeply disheartening. Supporters of same-sex marriage have achieved considerable success persuading their fellow citizens—through the democratic process—to adopt their view. That ends today. Five lawyers have closed the debate and enacted their own vision of marriage as a matter of constitutional law. Stealing this issue from the people will for many cast a cloud over same-sex marriage, making a dramatic social change that much more difficult to accept.

Effective immediately? Can a gay couple in Ohio get married today?

Pretty much yes. An article I read about SSM here in North Texas has all the counties individually making their preparations (changing forms to not read "bride and groom" for example). Sounds like it'll be happening very soon, if not immediately.

I'm so happy for everyone that's been waiting for this moment and almost as happy to see the reaction from the bigots that have tried holding back progress for so long- particularly the Mormons.

I hope decisions like this one push more folks to vote.

A 5-4 decision just goes to show that if what you want is progress (and progress seems to only really come from the left given that the american right appears to mostly just want to shit on it every step of the way) you need to get out there to vote given that Supreme Court candidates are put forth by the president. Had a conservative won one of the last couple of elections we probably wouldn't be here right now.

Holy shit, the comment counter on the Fox News website is spinning faster than the Monster game on the last day of the Steam sale!

I'm literally crying. I'm so happy about this. Pride is going to be insane this weekend.

I didn't know when I would see it in my life time. I'm seriously so overjoyed.

The last remaining English speaking territories that prohibit marriage equality are now Australia and Northern Ireland. Any bets on what falls next?
It's not going to happen in Australia for at least 3-5 years. We were one of the first on board the women's suffrage train too, it's fucking embarrassing

President Obama ‏@POTUS 27m27 minutes ago

Today is a big step in our march toward equality. Gay and lesbian couples now have the right to marry, just like anyone else. #LoveWins

Thomas dissent sounds as if he is desperately trying to prop up the framework of none of this really being the government's business in the first place... with chosen analogies that ironically demonstrate how much impact the government does in fact have on fundamental human dignity.

Equal rights and dignity can't be separated. You cannot keep a right away from someone and claim they have as much dignity (within the context of your lawful society) as other people. You have removed some dignity by treating them as a second class citizen.

Rights defend dignity against those who would take it away from people. This is the real reason why those who are terrified of emancipation for those they wish to oppress always fall back on reasoning such as "it's not the government's business to tell us what to do in cases like this". Or "we have to let society change naturally based on what people think."

Good luck to the people saying they'll leave America... everywhere else they would want to go already has marriage equality lol

They will come after Christian churches. Of course no one should be surprised.

Liberals play to win at all costs. Rules mean nothing to them. That is why there can never be an accommodation with them. Its like allowing a team into your league that cheats, bribes and lies at every opportunity.

Obviously there is a very serious problem here that can never be resolved though good faith and mutual acceptance of the binding principles. The Left has no respect for either. We as a nation need to come to terms with that reality and act accordingly in our own self interests. Just saying.
Christians in America should get ready. There will soon be a time when we will have to decide whether to bow to the absolute evil and actions that are contrary to our faith or to choose punishment rather than deny The Word. “Going along to get along” will not save our souls but rather will lose them.
Why would He even bother? After all, the United States has turned its back on Him. I think God will be content to just let us stew in our own juices.

My god. This is amazing. The persecution complex.

Scalia's dissent literally includes the words "California doesn't count".

That's fucking hilarious. I mean, in way that future legal scholars will mock him for hundreds of years for being a fucking idiot.
